Family Programs Family Archery

Location: Archery Park Description: Archery is a great activity for the whole family!

Join us to learn about the basic components of a bow, how to shoot a bow, and have fun shooting traditional and animal targets. We provide all the equipment. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

During this program, you will be given a GPS that will take you to various activities hidden through the park including an eye spy, ring toss, and pumpkin bowling. Space is limited so sign up today to get your spot.(Anyone under 2 years old are free)

Location: Brooktree Golf Course Description: Pumpkins have been hidden throughout the park and it is your job to find them. Fall Park Passport Program

Tighten those shoelaces because our annual Fall Park Passport Program is coming back. There is no cost for this family fun program as you hit designated trails looking for keywords. Once you find all the words and unscramble the secret phrase you will be entered for a prize.

This program runs the entire month of October and we will select the lucky winners the first week of November.

Youth Programs Tackle Football

Volleyball

Registration: July 19 – August 2 Ages: Current 3rd – 6th Grade Cost: $75 Program Dates: September 6 – October 15 Times: 8:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Practices: Coaches set practice schedules on weekday evenings Location: Manthey Park Description: Games and scrimmages are played weekday evenings (typically Thursdays) and/or Saturday mornings.

Kickoff & first practice: August 25, 5:45-7:15pm at the OHS Football Field. Please bring your shoulder pads to be checked by a coach. Helmets will be issued at the first practice/meeting. Please dress in athletic clothing for this practice/meeting as some skills and drills will be done.

Volunteer Coaches Needed: The Parks and Recreation Department uses volunteer coaches for many youth programs.

Volunteer coaches play an important role in the youth sports experience. Volunteers are trained in our philosophy of youth sports, first aid, concussions and how to teach skills for their sport. Youth Programs & Aquatics Join us as we team up with 4-H to offer to a fun filled night that connects youth within our community to learn something new. Each of these programs offer multiple activities that include a STEM or Community project along with an opportunity to get outside and learn something new with Parks and Recreation.

STEM Fun

Registration: July 19-November 14 Date: Thursday, November 17 Time: 6-8 p.m.

Cost:$15 per child Description: Leaves are not the only thing falling during this STEM based session. Participants will create various parachutes and test them to evaluate strengths, weaknesses, and areas to improve. You will need your engineering hat on for this! In addition we will go on a short night hike to learn about nocturnal animals and what sets us apart.

Service Project

Registration: July 19-December 12 Date: Friday, December 16 Time: 6-8 p.m.

Cost: $15 per child Description: The Holidays are nearing and it is an ideal time to give back to our community. In this session participants will create greeting cards and tie blankets for those in need. Participants will also get to make cookies in a jar and tree ornaments that will make a perfect gift for a loved one.

4-H Winter Wonderland

Registration: July 19-January 2 Date: Thursday, January 5 Time: 6-8 p.m.

Cost: $15 per child Description: Snowflakes are falling and so are the temps, but that wont stop us from having a great time learning about the science of snow globes. Participants will get to create their own winter wonderland to take home. We will also get the opportunity to bundle up and go snowshoeing and sledding at the West Hills Social Commons.

Aquatics Information regarding Swimming Lessons, Lifeguard Training, WSI Training, Open Swim, and Lap Swim will be released on August 8 on our Owatonna Parks and Recreation website.

Parent & Child Level 1: Child must be at least 18 months old, parent is in the water Parent & Child Level 2 :Child must be at least 3 years old, parent is in the water Level 1: Introduction to water skills helps students feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely Level 2: Fundamental aquatic skills gives swimmers success with fundamental skills Level 3: Stroke improvement builds on skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper waters Level 4: Stroke improvement develops confidence in the strokes learned and improves other aquatics Level 5: Stroke Refinement provides further coordination and refinement of strokes Level 6: Swimming and skill proficiency refines strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances

Description: This co-ed course is designed for beginning tennis players from age 5 through 8. In this course, the focus will be on learning how to track and make contact with the tennis ball. Players will also learn how to properly hold the tennis racquet & we will begin to develop their groundstrokes through various drills and games!

Red felt tennis balls are 75% slower than a normal yellow tennis ball.

Young Stars

Adult Programs Star Academy Advanced

Ages: (Pro invite only. 13+) Days: Sundays & Thursdays Times: 6:15-7:45 p.m.

Cost: $160 1x per week, $320 2x per week Description: This course is designed for players who have Varsity experience. This is intended for players who have been playing at a competitive level through high school tennis or USTA tournament competition beyond 12U. In this course, players will be developing more advanced strokes, learning advanced strategies, and preparing for competitions and college tennis preparation. A regular yellow tennis ball will be used on a full tennis court.

Adult Fall Softball

Registration: July 19 – August 2 Ages: Adults Cost: $24 per player/$165 per team Program Dates: Last week of August through last week of September. Five weeks of play Times: 6:30, 7:15, 8:15, 9:00 p.m.

Location: Fairgrounds Softball Diamonds Description: Adult Fall Softball league. Co-Rec plays on Tuesdays. Men’s league will play Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays pending each league.

Ages: 7-10 Days: Mondays & Wednesdays Time: Mondays: 6:30-7:15pm Wednesdays: 5:30-6:15pm Cost: $80 1x week, $160 2x week.

Description: This co-ed course is designed for players aged 7-10 who have completed Red Ball classes or have at least 1-2 years of playing experience. In this course, the focus will be on developing groundstrokes, learning how to hit with topspin, and the serve and serve return is introduced. Players at this stage will use the shortened court w/ a regular tennis net.

In this course, players will further develop their strokes and learn more about tennis strategy through drilling, playing games, and competition between one another. A regular yellow tennis ball will be used on a full tennis court.

Mahjong or mah-jongg is a strategy tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players and designed to test your memory.

Hand and Foot

Wednesday 12:30-4 p.m.

Hand and Foot is a variation of Canasta that became popular in the United States in the 1950s. The objective of the game is to get rid of all your cards. The score is tallied up at the end of each round. It is easy to learn and addictive to play.

Monday 12:30-3 p.m.

Bunco is a social dice game traditionally played with 12 Quilters players divided into groups. However, almost any number can play. Players attempt to roll specific numbers on the dice Monday 8:30-12:30 p.m. depending on the round. Roll a 3-of-a-kind during the match This creative group meets for the purpose of creating warm, colorful quilts. Members of the group have a good time while for a Bunco! they share quilting knowledge and skills with each other.

500 Cards

Cribbage

Cribbage is a card game that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations to gain points. You move your peg along the scoreboard as you gain points, and the first person to reach 120 points wins. There is something for everyone in this game, and all new players are welcome!

Pinochle

Wednesday/ Friday 1-3 p.m.

Pinochle, also called pinochle or penuchle, is a trick-taking, Ace-Ten card game typically for two to four players and played with a 48-card deck. It is derived from the card game bezique; players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular - Minnesota Zoo

Enjoy a brand new nighttime event at the Minnesota Zoo. Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is a magical journey seeing over 5,000 glowing carved pumpkins. AARP Safe Driving Course

Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday 9-10 a.m.

Try our FREE Strength Training Class. This Group Lead program will give you a full-body workout from either a standing or a sitting position. Weights and resistance bands are available for use if you are looking for a challenge. You will go through stretching to increase flexibility, mobility, and balance. The class is held in the West Hills Social Commons on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9-10 a.m. No registration is required.

AARP offers a safe driving course that allows you to receive a 10% reduction in car insurance for anyone over the age of 55. Full courses are designed for those who have never gone through a class before, however, if you have already taken this class, you can take one of the many refresher courses available.

Medicare has a benefit for diabetics that cover one pair of therapeutic shoes and 3 pairs of inserts per calendar year.

Days Vary West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center offers classes designed for an aerobic workout that stresses movement of the joints and muscles. A great small pool environment which includes a water temperature of approximately 90 degrees which is great for rehabilitation and arthritis. Class sizes are limited. The program encourages families and individuals to explore our parks and trails and exercise by walking the mapped trails. The four-week program is FREE and all access to the parks is FREE!

How it work?

Get your passport. Available on the Park & Rec website (www.ci.owatonna.mn.us/parksrecreation).

Visit the parks listed and locate the hidden password. Parks will have a small sign mounted to a post along the trail. The signs are approximately four feet from the ground. Each sign has a word on the back. All signs will be up for the month of October Reveal the phrase! Write the hidden password for each park/trail in the appropriate box to reveal the message. Turn in your completed passport by October 29th.

Enjoy your time in the parks! The ten Passport Parks and Trails are Mineral Springs Park, Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve, Dartts Park, Buxton Trail, North Straight River Parkway, Kaplan’s Woods Trail, 18th Street Trail, Manthey Park, Muckle Trail and Kaplan’s Woods Parkway. A completed passport equals 11 miles of trail walking!
