Youth Scholarship Fund
This fund helps support programs for all youth in the Owatonna School District and Adult Adaptive Recreation programs. Forms are available at the Parks, Recreation and Facilities office. Participants must pay 40% of program fees, any late fees and must show verification of one of the following qualifications:
• Current recipients of Free or Reduced Lunch Program
• Current recipients of SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or Social Security Benefits
• Current recipients of Medical Assistance Program
• Other circumstances (requires explanation)

Whether you’re looking for fitness classes to stay active, sports leagues to join with friends, or exploring nature to connect with the great outdoors, Owatonna’s Parks & Recreation Department has something for everyone.

50+ ACTIVITIES
Become a member of Adult Leisure Pursuits at the West Hills Social Commons. This group is for anyone over age 50 who wants to connect with others and stay active. There are lots of great programs happening every day. Membership are $40 for the current calendar year.
Canterbury Park Horse Races
Come along to the Canterbury Park horse races. Everyone is welcome. The tables are hot. The craft beer is cold. And out on the track, a race is about to begin. This is the magic of Canterbury Park, a favorite destination for horse racing, casino action, concerts, events and all-around entertainment.

Treasure Island with Bingo Option
Visit Treasure Island Resort and Casino for a chance to win big and play some Bingo! A $3 food voucher and $15 of free slot play money will be provided to each participant. Bingo is not included in the price of this trip, so you need to bring extra money for bingo and food.

Fall Train Ride
Let’s embark on a delightful train journey this fall lasting an hour and a half at the Minnesota Transportation Museum in Osceola, Wisconsin. There, we can enjoy handmade pizza cooked on the spot. We’ll then head to the remarkable Franconia Sculpture Park to behold their stunning outdoor sculptures. Lastly, we’ll make a brief visit to the Omi Winery and Tap Room for a refreshing drink on our way back.

Fall Sightseeing River Boat Cruise
Join us for a Fall paddle boat cruise on the mighty St. Croix River. This 2-hour narrated public excursion departs from Hudson, Wisconsin. After the trip, we will make a pit stop in downtown Stillwater to have a quick beer or do a bit of shopping before heading back home. This is a trip you will not want to miss.

Foot Clinic
Looking for proper foot care? Look no further, a retired RN can help with clipping nails and getting your feet in tip-top shape. Please bring your own towel along with cash the day of. Registration in advance is required. Each session is thirty minutes long.

AARP Driver’s Safety
This course, hosted by AARP, will qualify you for a 10% reduction in car insurance if you are over the age of 55. If you are new to the AARP Safe Driving Class, you will need to take the 8-hour course (Full Course), which is divided into two four-hour days. If you have previously taken this course, then you can take the four-hour ‘Refresher Course’. Stop by the West Hills Social Commons for a class schedule or call 507-444-4321.
Arthritis Foundation Exercise
Do you want to reduce body pain and stiffness? Do you want to increase your muscle strength? This FREE exercise program provides low-impact physical activities developed by the Arthritis Foundation. Each class includes exercises that can be performed while sitting or standing including endurance, balance, strength, flexibility, relaxation and health education. The program has been proven to reduce body pain and stiffness, maintain or increase muscle strength, balance, and coordination, increase energy and improve the performance of daily activities. Eileen Wohlenhaus, certified AFEP instructor will lead the program.

Beginner 500
This simple trick-taking card game often played with four to six players with partners. Using a standard deck of cards, each player is dealt 10 cards and takes bids to take tricks.

Cribbage
This card game plays and groups cards in combination to gain points and move pegs along the scoreboard to reach 120 points to win. There is something for everyone in this game and new players are welcome!

Hand and Foot
The object of hand and foot is to get rid of all your cards. The score is tallied up at the end of each round. It is easy to learn and addictive to play.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a strategy tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China and has spread through the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players and is designed to test your memory.

Pinochle
Pinochle, also called pinochle or penuchle, is a trick-taking, Ace-Ten card game typically for two to four players and played with a 48-card deck. It is derived from the card game Bezique; players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds.

Semcac Senior Dining
Come join us for lunch every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We have several dietary alternatives, such as diabetic and low-salt options to meet your needs. If you would like to know what is on the menu for the day, please call 507-455-3195. Everyone will be served a meal regardless of whether or not they can donate.
Fee: Those 60 and older may make a donation of $4, while those younger than 60 are asked to make a donation of $7.

Strength Training

Adaptive Basketball
Join us in the gym to play, throw around a basketball, and shoot some hoops. It’s a great activity for getting competitive in a fun atmosphere that promotes an active lifestyle. The gym is not ADAaccessible stairs are required to access it.

Bowling is an enjoyable sport that is accessible to everyone. Adaptive Disc Golf
This week we’ll be heading outside to play some disc golf. This activity aims to alternate throwing frisbees with your partner until someone scores in the chain-link basket. This program allows you to learn a new sport while encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The walk will be about a mile long, so wear shoes to walk in.

Adaptive Snowshoeing

Archery is a great activity for the whole family! Learn about the basic components of a bow, how to shoot a bow and have fun shooting traditional and animal targets. Equipment is provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Full Moon Snowshoeing

This Owatonna Parks and Recreation program promotes making healthy lifestyle choices by encouraging families and individuals to explore our parks and trails and get exercise by walking the mapped trails. This four-week program is FREE! Enjoy your time in the parks! The Passport includes Mineral Springs Park, Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve, Dartts Park, Buxton Trail, North Straight River Parkway, Kaplan’s Woods Trail, 18th Street Trail, Manthey Park, Muckle Trail and Kaplan’s Woods Parkway. A completed passport equals 11 miles of trail walking! Visit these parks to locate the hidden password. Parks will have a small sign mounted to a post along the trail. The signs are approximately four feet from the ground. Each sign has a word on the back. Reveal the phrase! Write the hidden password for each park/ trail in the appropriate box on the Passport to reveal the message. Each word counts as an additional opportunity to win. Partially completed passports are eligible to win. Special thanks to the Mayo Clinic Health System for helping make this possible.

Pickleball Beginner
This beginner Pickleball course is focused on teaching people these basic fundamentals of scoring, technique and etiquette of the sport through drilling, instruction and game play. This course is 60-minute-long and instructed by Director of Pickleball, Matt Hokanson.

Show off your skills by participating in fun fall activities scattered throughout the park, such as, eye spy, ring toss and pumpkin bowling. Using a GPS, you will hike to each site with your family and friends. (Ages two and under are free)

Snowshoe Geocaching for Smore’s

Spooktacular Pumpkins

Swimming Lessons - Level 1
This course is for beginners who are comfortable in the water to learn the basics of swimming such as: bobbing, going under water, supported front and back floating, supported rolling over from front to back, supported gliding, supported flutter kick, supported front crawl arms and jumping in. Swimming Lessons - Level 2
This course is for swimmers who are able to float on their front and back with assistance and put their heads under water. Swimming Lessons - Level 5/6
This combined Level 5 and Level 6 class allows students who are registered at Level 5 to be taught the level 5 course, while students registered as Level 6 are being taught the level 6 course. Level 5 swimmers are able to: swim freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke 25 yards, scissors kick, whip kick, treading water and dive. They will work on alternate breathing, stride jump, refining freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, dolphin kick and butterfly, open turn on front and back, feet-first surface dive and treading water. Level 6 swimmers are able to swim front and back crawl 50 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, butterfly 25 yards, sidestroke 10 yards, tread water for three minutes and dive. These swimmers will work on all six strokes, front and back crawl flip turn, breaststroke turn, breaststroke speed turn and pullout, butterfly turn, sidestroke turn, pike and tuck surface dive, pike and tuck dive from board, tread water for five minutes, and basic water rescue. Swimming Lessons - Private Lessons
Private Swimming Lessons are great for Young Swimmers, Novice Swimmers, Adult Swimmers, and Swimmers with disabilities. All lessons are taught by an American Red Cross instructor who will work with each student on the areas they wish to grow while following the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Registration
Guidelines: - Cost is $110 for one student and $170 for two students (scholarships are not available for private lessons). - Class limit of no more than 2 students per class. Red Cross Lifeguarding
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Pre-requisites: practice and prepare for the following skills which are required to pass the class. Must be at least 15 years of age at the time of the class. You will not receive a refund if you do not complete or pass the class. Swim 300 yards continuously (non-stop) performing either front crawl or breaststroke. Swim 20 yards, pick up 10-pound brick from 10 feet of water and return it back 20 yards using only a kick, holding brick with two hands on the chest. Tread water with no hands/arms for two minutes.

These classes are designed for an aerobic workout that stresses movement of the joints, muscles, and heart in a great small pool with a water temperature of approximately 90 degrees which is great for rehabilitation and arthritis. Indoor Play Space
Welcome to the indoor play space, for children six years of age and younger! Our play area is a safe and stimulating environment where kids can have fun, be active, and explore through play. The play space is equipped with age-appropriate activities that encourage physical activity and development. Kids can enjoy shooting hoops on our child-sized basketball hoop, playing soccer with soft soccer balls and nets, crawling, rolling, and playing on soft floor mats. Parents or guardians are required to supervise their children at all times and are responsible for ensuring that their children follow the rules and guidelines of the play space. Daily registration is required.

This program is focused on developing fundamental skills and providing a positive environment for kids to learn and grow as basketball players. Practices will be held once a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, to give kids time to learn and practice their skills in a supportive and safe environment. Coaches are dedicated to providing a fun and engaging learning experience that are designed to help each child reach their full potential both on and off the court. Teams will have games on Saturday mornings to provide an exciting chance for the kids to showcase their skills in a fun and friendly competitive setting. Participating in games is an important part of the lear ning experience and allows the kids to put into practice what they have lear ned in practice. 3rd graders will focus on building fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and playing defense while also incorporating fun games and activities to keep them engaged and excited about learning. 4th-6th graders will continue to build on their fundamental skills and be introduced to more advanced techniques and strategies. Basketball - K-2nd Grades

This four-week skills camp is led by the Owatonna High School volleyball program. Players will rotate through stations learning the basics and mechanics of volleyball. Max of 50 players. Exact dates will be determined in collaboration with the high school volleyball program and the Volleyball Boosters.

This volleyball program is a fantastic opportunity for young athletes to learn and develop fundamental skills while fostering a culture of sportsmanship. The league is structured to provide a balanced approach to learning and competition, with an emphasis on developing fundamental skills such as serving, passing, setting and hitting. Coaches will work closely with players to teach proper techniques and provide ample opportunities for skill-building drills and practice during weekly practices on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays. Games will be held Saturday mornings in September and October to provide players with a chance to apply their skills in a friendly, competitive environment. The focus of the games is on player development, teamwork, and sportsmanship rather than just winning or losing. Coaches and officials will encourage fair play, good sportsmanship and respect for opponents and officials throughout the games.

Football - 3rd-6th Grades
This tackle football program for 3rd and 4th graders is designed to provide a fun and safe environment for participants to learn and develop their skills and build their confidence on the field.
This program consists of practices, scrimmages and games throughout the season with a focus on developing the fundamental skills, including passing, catching, blocking and tackling. Coaches will typically work closely with players to help them improve their technique and build their confidence on the field. Volunteer coaches are needed. Please consider volunteering to work with a team. Coaches set their own practice time and location. Tackling dummies are located at Jaycee, Lincoln and Manthey Park pavilions for teams to use. Safety is a top priority in the program, with coaches emphasizing proper equipment use and technique to reduce the risk of injury. Players will be required to wear helmets, shoulder pads and other protective gear during practices, scrimmages and games. Registration: 07/18-08/01/2023

Indoor Walking Program
• Available indoor walking space around the perimeter of the tennis courts.
• Courts 1-4 are reserved exclusively for walking during the Walking Program hours.
• Courts 5 & 6 are available during Walking Program hours if not reserved for tennis or pickleball use.

Season Pass
Season Pass can be purchased at the Parks and Recreation office or online. The Season Pass can be used for all drop- in programs at River Springs including Lap Swim, Open Swim, Tiny Tot Time, Water Aerobics, and Water Walking
Season passes cannot be used for programming that requires registration. An identification (ID) card will be issued to each person to present each time they enter. If you lose your ID card, there is a $2 replacement fee. Season Passes are non-transferable.

Family Season Pass Requirements
• A household consisting of up to 2 adults (parents or legal guardians only) and their dependent children.
• Family members must all live in the same household.
• Only those individuals in the immediate family can be included on the family season pass.
• Dependents include children 22 years old and under if, they are a full-time student in college; otherwise, an individual season pass is required. (College ID will be needed for proof of enrollment.)
Punch Cards
A great gift for any occasion, punch cards can be purchased at the Parks and Recreation office or online until the water park opens. After June 1 punch cards are available for purchase at the water park. Passbook prices: 10 Passes for $70 30 Passes for $180
Morehouse Park Ice Skating
The Warsinski rinks, located in Morehouse Park, are the only supervised skating rinks in Owatonna. The Chalet, a large warming house complete with cross country ski and skate rentals and food concessions, is located at the west end of School Street. If you like something more action-packed than open skating, join one of the hockey games which you’re sure to find. The Chalet offers hockey stick rentals and skate helpers for beginner skaters!

Buecksler Park Skating Rink – we are thrilled to share with you that Buecksler Park will have a skating rink for a second year. This will provide another space for families to come together and lace up their skates and hit the ice!

Rules & General Information
Directory Data: Directory data may be released by Parks, Recreation and Facilities that includes, but is not limited to, name, participation in activities, awards received and images including candid photos and videos of participants in class, activities or sport settings. You may decline authorization by contacting the Parks, Recreation and Facilities Office.
General Terms: A $10 administrative fee is applied to all refunds (except when canceled by Parks, Recreation and Facilities ). If an activity is canceled by Parks, Recreation and Facilities prior to its completion, refunds are prorated. Refunds due to cancellation by Parks, Recreation and Facilities are automatic. All other refunds must be requested by the purchaser. Refund checks are issued after City Council approval, except when credit is applied on customer’s account (when applicable). Registrations, season passes and memberships are not transferable once a program starts.
Memberships/Season Passes: No refund is given except when due to illness, injury or moving from the area. Refunds are prorated, not to exceed 50% of the membership fee. (Seasonal memberships – no refund is allowed after July 1.)
Photography/Videography: The Owatonna Parks, Recreation and Facilities staff may occasionally photograph or videotape events and program participants. These images are used by Owatonna Parks, Recreation and Facilities in print and/or electronic media unless specifically requested otherwise by a participant, parent or guardian.
Programs, Classes, Player Fees: No refunds are given after a program starts except when due to injury or illness. Refunds are prorated not to exceed 50% of the registration fee.

Trips: No refund is given after the registration deadline unless the spot can be filled by a waiting list or, if there is no waiting list, a replacement is found by the participant.
Waiver of Liability to the City of Owatonna: Program participants, by registering for an activity, agree the City of Owatonna will not be held liable for any claim, demand, injury, damage, action or course for action while participating in a recreation program. Participation in recreation programs is voluntary in nature and activities offered are the choice of the individual.
Youth with Disabilities: Youth with disabilities or health concerns are encouraged to participate in any youth program. Adaptive equipment, program modifications and other accommodations to assist the child will allow them to participate with equal advantage. Coaches and staff must receive pertinent information regarding the child’s needs prior to their first meeting.
Youth Scholarship Fund: This fund helps support programs for all youth in the Owatonna School District and Adult Adaptive Recreation programs. Forms are available at the Parks, Recreation and Facilities office . Participants must pay 40% of program fees, any late fees and must show verification of one of the following qualifications:
