The original gallery was built in 1969 on its present location under the guidance of architect Hugh Allward of Allward & Gouinlock. It was a square, stone, modernist structure allowing for 6,000 feet of exhibition space, ofces and vault storage. In 1987, a $5.4 million dollar expansion was commissioned and Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, renowned for his love of natural light and materials, was secured to add 36,000 square feet to meet the growing needs of the RMG and the community. Erickson built his design around the existing structure, incorporating the original stone façade into the dramatic lobby design which is fooded with natural lights, skylights and soaring 35 foot ceilings. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is a vibrant and engaging art gallery dedicated to sharing and protecting the stories of our communities through art, shared authority, education and engagement. The Gallery is a meeting place for exploration, a place where art, artists and the community come together in conversation. Visit the community engagement station in the front lobby, participate in studio activities, and browse the gif shop.

The Biltmore Theatre opened to the public on April 4, 1940. Oshawa’s Biltmore Theatre was a chain of theatres owned by the Okun Brothers who resided in Toronto, ON Canada. The afuent Okun Brothers had made their fortune manufacturing and selling men’s and women’s hats under the Biltmore brand. From the 1990s to the 2000s the Biltmore had changed owners and names multiple times. The current owner, Julius Kedvessy is in the process of restoring the interior and exterior of 39 King Street East and has maintained the original name, Biltmore Theatre. Care and consideration have been taken to ensure restorations refect the feel and design of the original Biltmore Theatre.

Although surrounded by housing and higher learning institutions, Camp Samac remains a quiet and restful playground for youth. Scouts Canada privately owns the 63-hectare site. The largest portion of the property, 60.7 hectares, was donated to the Scouts in 1943 by Col. R.S. McLaughlin. The outdoor swimming pool on the site was also a donation from Col. McLaughlin and opened in the early 1950s. There are 21 buildings on the site built in a distinct log style including the council hall overlooking the lake.
