Waste Collection Etiquette • Use standard garbage bags no larger than 66 cm x 90 cm (26” x 36”) and do not exceed 20 kg (44 lbs) weight limit. • Empty liquids and remove lids from bottles and jars. Place lids separately in your blue box. • Keep compost free of plastic. Line WED your kitchen container with 100% certified compostable bags (NOT biodegradable or plastic bags), paper-based products or wrap organics securely in newspaper. • Recycling must be loose inside your blue box, not in plastic bags. Don’t overfill your blue boxes and keep material below the rim to prevent wind from blowing material out. • Place your green bins and garbage beside each other. This makes collection quicker and more efficient for collection staff. • Large item collections must be scheduled ahead of time. Arrange for the collection of large oversized items at least 2 business days prior to your garbage collection day. For more tips, read on further in this information guide.

Blue Box Collection Tips

Additional blue boxes and blue box lids are available at the following locations:

Weekly collection • Place your blue boxes at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. • Separate recycling into two blue boxes - one for papers and one for containers. • Flatten small cardboard boxes and place them securely in with your paper. Flatten, bundle and tie larger boxes and place them on top of or between your blue boxes. • Empty liquids and remove lids from bottles and jars. Place lids separately in your blue box. • On windy days, put your blue boxes out the morning of collection rather than the night before or use a Blue Box lid - see details below. • During winter months, set blue boxes on cleared portions of your driveway and not on top of snowbanks or icy patches. • Do not overload blue boxes or use plastic bags. Purchase additional boxes if needed. Heavy boxes and containers over the weight limit of 20 kg (44 lbs) pose a health and safety risk to contractors.

!

Put a lid on litter! Made from recycled tires, the blue box lid will keep recyclable material from blowing out of your blue box. Blue box lids are available for $13 each at Regional facilities and City Hall where blue boxes are sold. For more information on blue box lids, visit Durham.ca/Waste.

Green Bin Collection Tips

Weekly collection

Using your kitchen food waste container:

From kitchen container to curbside green bin:

• Store the small container in your kitchen in a convenient place. • Keep compost free of plastic. Line your kitchen container with 100% certified compostable bags, paper-based products or wrap organics securely in newspaper. • Empty your food waste directly into the liner bags. Look for these logos when purchasing compostable bags:

• Once your kitchen container is full, tie bags and place contents into the large curbside green bin for collection. Lock lid securely to discourage pests. • Store your green bin in your garage or outside in the shade. • On your collection day, place your green bin at the curb before 7:00 a.m. • Damaged green bins can be exchanged free of charge at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre (see page 10) or call Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311.

Important Reminders • • • •

No plastic liner bags (e.g. grocery bags). Remove plastic food wrap and packaging. Do not place the smaller kitchen container at the curb. Do not overload your green bin. The weight limit is 20 kg (44 lbs). Purchase additional green bins if necessary at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre (see page 10). • Do not place on snowbanks or icy patches.
