The History Behind the Newberry Opera House
The Newberry Opera House is one of the most iconic signature landmarks of Newberry since its dedication in 1882. Designed by G. L. Norman and constructed for $30,000, this Victorian civic architecture is eclectic and enchanting. The French Gothic clock tower dominates the city’s skyline, towering 130 feet in the air with a gar fish weathervane adorned on top. The Opera House quickly became known as “the entertainment center of the Midlands,” with stage appearances of New York companies, minstrel and variety shows, famed vocalists, magicians, and more. MEETINGS & CONFERENCES
“We love using the Newberry Firehouse Conference Center (NFCC) for our quarterly staff meetings. With 40 stores throughout the Upstate and Midlands, The NFCC is centrally located for all our staff. The building is historic with a small-town charm. The outdoor courtyard is great for taking in fresh air during breaks. The staff is really what has us coming back year-after-year. It’s lots of small things that add up to the best imaginable event experience. Bonus… it’s less expensive than most conference centers/room rentals, which is ideal for any non-profit.”

WELLS JAPANESE GARDEN
Designed by Fulmer Wells in 1930 as a memorial to his grandmother Cornelia Shumpert Wells, the fanciful Japanese Garden boasts pagoda-like buildings, beautiful reflecting ponds, bridges, and exotic plants. The Garden is now owned by the City of Newberry and its maintenance is funded from a small endowment established by the Wells family for its care. The west coast influences of Mr. Well’s education and his love of the Japanese Tea Garden located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park are evident in the styling of the garden. The garden is located at 1608 Lindsay Street in downtown Newberry.
