WELCOME to the MIRAMICHI REGION
The Miramichi is a river valley and coastal region in northeastern New Brunswick. Our region stretches from deep forests and rolling hills to small harbours along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Covering 12,473 km2, about 17% of New Brunswick’s total landmass, we are made up of the City of Miramichi, Greater Miramichi Rural District, Upper Miramichi, Village of Doaktown, Miramichi River Valley, Municipality of Alnwick, and three Mi’kmaq First Nations communities: Metepenagiag, Natoaganeg, and Esgenoôpetitj. Rooted in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral homeland of the Mi’kmaq, and enriched by Acadian, Irish, Scottish, and English, newcomer cultures. The Miramichi is a place where history, stories, and river life run deep.
From the coastlines of the Northumberland Strait and Miramichi Bay, to the river communities of Doaktown, Upper Miramichi, and every town, village, and First Nation in between, this is a place that feels vast in nature yet close-knit in spirit.

Land ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We would like to acknowledge that the Miramichi Region is situated in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the ‘Treaties of Peace and Friendship’ first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized an ongoing relationship between nations.
WE ARE ALL TREATY PEOPLE.

An Insider’s Guide to OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
By John Fletcher
Around here, outdoor adventure is not a checklist. It is a feeling you carry home. John Fletcher, the heart behind Fletcher’s Farm, spends his days close to the land and his free time following water, forest, and the quiet pull of a new trail. His rule is simple: Get outside, and your whole day can change.
John grew up here, and that rootedness shows in how he talks about place. Not in superlatives, but in contrasts. Salt-marsh edges and sandy stretches. Dense boreal forest and remote rivers. A landscape that keeps shifting, and somehow always feels familiar.

“Love. That is the only word (and emotion) that comes to mind. I deeply love the people, the places and the destinations.” John Fletcher
The paddle that never gets old
If you ask John where he returns to again and again, he does not hesitate for long. A canoe on the Little Southwest Miramichi River is his kind of repeat adventure. It is the sort of route that meets you di erently each time, depending on light, weather, and who you brought with you.
If you only have one day
John’s one-day answer is pure water and wide sky: Tabusintac Estuary. He paddled it by canoe last summer and says it has been living in his head ever since. If you want that “how is this real” moment without needing to go far, this is the one he points to first.
The view that still stops him
John films a lot from above, and the places that stick are the ones you work your way into, one bend at a time. Trout Brook Falls at spring high water takes the cake for him, and it is a true mix of paddle and foot. The approach is part of the magic: Green moss-covered rocks, a tight, narrow brook pulling you forward, then a turn, and suddenly a double waterfall that feels like it was kept secret on purpose.
Perfect-day routes, depending on your mood
John’s ideal day changes with the season.
Striped bass (spring): He loves fishing the lower Northwest Miramichi, where fresh water meets salt, and the action can be electric.
Canoe route he keeps recommending: The Main Southwest Miramichi from Half-Moon (near Juniper) down to Boiestown, a stretch of water that feels made for unhurried miles and long looks.
Local tip
Do a little recon before you arrive, John says, not to over-plan, but to match the day to your comfort level.
If you are more DIY, go for it. If you would rather have local support, you can book guided outings that fit your style. For fishing, that can mean fly fishing for Atlantic salmon or striped bass fishing, depending on the season and what you are after. Some salmon fly fishing can be arranged through regional accommodations like Country Haven Lodge & Cottages, and striped bass fishing can be booked through local guides like Miramichi Bay Fishing. For paddling, rental companies such as Creekside Paddle can help you get on the water with the right gear.
