ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The city of Miramar is located in South Florida, near the Broward County/Miami-Dade County line. Our city encompasses a population of over 140,000 residents, representing a myriad of nationalities, languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. All of our 229 sworn officers and 81.5 support staff are committed to improving the quality of life in Miramar. Our community-oriented policing philosophy strengthens partnerships, thus increasing engagement, collaboration, and trust. This support has attributed to a consistent reduction in crime – year after year – since 2014. Our Internal Affairs Unit has also documented a significant reduction in Response to Resistance incidents. We are proud to say that the department had zero racially biased complaints in 2021. The Miramar Police Department is an industry leader in professionalism. We have repeatedly been recognized with accreditation by The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) and The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In 2021 we were again awarded “Meritorious” accreditation which is the highest level of international accreditation possible, given only to those agencies that have shown excellence in professionalism and quality assurance for more than 15 years. Our department has been continuously accredited for more than 25 years. Being a good neighbor and a valued member of the community is one of our highest priorities.

CHIEF’S MESSAGE I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to lead the men and women of this distinguished department. We take great pride in delivering unparalleled police services to our diverse Miramar community. Ensuring public safety, while maintaining the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity is our pledge to you.
Our department has been at the forefront of modern policing, committed to 21st Century Policing strategies and the Eight Can’t Wait initiatives, promoting effective crime reduction while building public trust, reducing Use of Force incidents and increasing accountability. Our dedicated professionals strive each day to strengthen community relationships, mentor youths, support senior programs, and deliver exceptional public safety and code compliance services, while ensuring a safer community and enhancing the quality of life in Miramar. “Serving Our Community” is our mission and partnering with our residents is our goal. As your chief, I believe in the importance of developing future leaders that are dedicated, compassionate and will instill a culture that inspires the succession of excellence. Leading with intention, providing a clarity of purpose that will motivate our team to carry out our mission is my goal. As we continue recruiting a whole new generation of police officers that reflect our community, rest assured that the future of this agency will continue our commitment of providing the best service to our residents and businesses. Together, along with your support, the Miramar Police Department will be the model for success not only in South Florida but the nation.
H
INNOVATION Miramar Police Department continues to be a progressive department, adopting innovative technology that keeps us in the forefront of policing. We are the first agency in the county to have a cloud hosted police records management system, making it more resilient. Our field officers are fitted with body-worn cameras for transparency and accountability. Officers are equipped with the latest version of police tasers; and more robust digital radios, ensuring better coverage for our community. Our Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Unit operates three DGI drones under FAA guidelines part 107, assisting in traffic crash 3D diagraming, SWAT operations, missing person searches, crime scene investigations and community events. Technology that detects gunshots – even before calls
to 911 are made – is also now live in Miramar. ShotSpotter technology provides real-time alerts to police, notifying them of precisely when and where gunshot incidents occur, resulting in faster, more accurate responses to the scene to better recover evidence, interview witnesses and attend to victims.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Citizens’ Police Academy
The Citizens’ Police Academy is a free 14-week course for residents, which provides operational information about the Miramar Police Department. Topics include how investigations are conducted, crime scene procedures, traffic stops, and scenario based “Shoot, Don’t Shoot.” Students are placed in the role of the police officer making a traffic stop, as well as responding to calls that are typical of an officer’s day. Participants also receive CPR training/certification. Our Hispanic Outreach Law Enforcement Academy, “HOLA,” is available for our Spanish language speakers and our Crime Prevention Academy for Businesses includes active shooter, cyber security, commercial security, emergency management, fraud, and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) topics.
Police Explorer Program
Police Exploring is a learning-for-life organization of the Boy Scouts of America and is offered through the Miramar Police Department for men and women ages 14 to 20 to build character, while providing citizen training and educating youth on law enforcement and the complexities of police service. Training is also done so that explorers can compete in local and state competitions. The Explorer program has been an integral part of our organization for more than 40 years. There is no cost to join the program. For more information, visit www.miramarpd.org/police-explorers.
Security Surveys
Residential and commercial security surveys are provided to the community, free of charge. The surveys identify vulnerable areas in the home or business and suggestions are made to improve the security. Contact your community resource officer for more information.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Volunteers have the opportunity to give back to their community through the hours they volunteer, while gaining invaluable insights into our city’s law enforcement system and how it works. Miramar PD’s volunteers provide thousands of service hours to the police department. These hours are generated by the dozens of volunteers working in various units throughout the department, to include Code Compliance, our front desk, Property & Evidence Unit, Crime Scene Unit, Citizens on Patrol, fingerprinting, Fiscal Unit, and the Office of the Chief. This partnership with the community saves the city tens of thousands of dollars a year in staffing hours and is a huge asset to both taxpayers and the police department.
