King of Cats Theatre Company, the official Educational Outreach Theater of MNM Theatre Company comes to the Miramar Cultural Center!

King of Cats Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing Broadway caliber theater to every child and school in South Florida to ensure every family and school can afford to take their children to see the magic of theater! Educational theater programs presented by King of Cats are designed for elementary, middle, and high school will be held over multiple days from Tuesdays to Fridays. Each show comes with a study guide for the students.

TREASURE ISLAND January 11 – 14, 2022 An amazing story of equal parts excitement and personal growth, the story centers on Jim and his new found family as they work together for both treasure and the forging of their interpersonal bonds. While Jim learns what it’s like to find your own family, Long John Silver, the infamous pirate, learns that there is still good inside him and that he cares more than he ever thought he could. Telling the tale of a good kid from a bad circumstance and the difference he can make in the world; this is a swashbuckling story of piracy and self-discovery.

Suggested for 5th through 12th grade.

ROMEO AND JULIET February 22 – 25 | March 22 – 25, 2022 The themes of young love, in-fighting, and the adults in their lives failing to help when kids need them most are universal. This show highlights these themes in a way that makes the story feel fresh and creates an ending that needs to be seen to be believed. Modern music in a movie score style to make the show more accessible for new theater goers and to set up the insane, multimedia ending.

This adaption makes this timeless classic feel like a heart stopping new work that will have teens falling in love with theater and classic literature in a way that respects the original while bringing a breath of fresh modernity.

Suggested for 6th through 12th grade.

AWAKEN: A SLEEPING BEAUTY MUSICAL April 12 – 15 AND May 3 – 6, 2022 A World Premiere and delightful new musical fairytale musical based off two favorite fairy tales; Sleeping Beauty, and Princess and the Pauper. The Story focuses on two heroines, Finnley and Dawn. To protect their child from a curse cast by the Evil Fairy, the King and Queen swapped the baby princess with an orphaned infant that was being raised in the stables. Princess Finnley was raised thinking she’s nothing but a stable girl and longs for adventure and excitement while Dawn (the orphan who’s been raised knowing she’s a stand in for the princess) longs to be out of the palace and finally able to be herself. They meet the naive yet kind Prince Bennet and Finnley finds her soulmate, and Dawn finds a true friend. When Rancora’s curse strikes Finnley down on her 16th birthday, can Dawn’s friendship and Bennet’s love overcome a witch, a henchman, a thicket, and a flying dragon? It’s a FAIRY TALE! Of course, it can!

This fun-loving musical is suggested for all grades.

THE NUTCRACKER Thursday, December 16, 2021. 10:30 am.

Miramar Cultural Center in partnership with Ballet Etudes presents The Nutcracker. The enchanting holiday ballet that has enthralled audiences of all ages for over a century returns to MCC! This magical production is celebrating its 47th anniversary in South Florida and is proud to call MCC its home for over 10 years. A must-see treat all students are sure to enjoy this Christmas season!

The Robin Hood: How a Hero Came to Be! Friday, June 24, 2022 at 7:00 pm. | $15 (Activities start at 6:00 pm) A world premiere written Robyn Eli Brenner, an incredible local playwright.

It’s a devised work that is fun, zany, quirky, and full of heart!

Romeo and Juliet Friday, March 25, 2022.

7:30 pm. | $15 (Activities start at 6:30 pm) This new version leaves all the classic language while also adding modern music, anachronistic costuming, awesome stunt work and an insane multimedia ending that needs to be seen to be believed. This show will have the whole family not only understanding classical language but falling in love with it!

Awaken: A Sleeping Beauty Musical Saturday, May 7, 2022. 2:00 pm. | $15 (Activities start at 1:00 pm) An adaptation of the Sleeping Beauty story written by the Rigano Songbook.

FAMILY FREFORM ART SATURDAY in celebration of Black History month February 12, 2022.

12:00 noon to 4:00 pm.

Please join us as MCC presents a day of fun activities that both educate and entertain. Activities include art and craft for kids, youth forum, outdoor music and dance, cultural presentations, cooking demos, short films, face painting, a tour of the art exhibit in the Ansin Family Art Gallery, art and craft vendors and food trucks.

KIDS KITCHEN LIVE Ages 5 – 9 $15 per table, 10 tables.

Each table holds 1 - 2 Children + 1 Adult Two sessions – 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.

February 12, April 2, June 11, 2022 Make fun DIY treats along with MCC Chef – Chef Randy! Participants will have one treat to eat and one to take home!

JUNIOR CHEF CHALLENGE Ages 10 – 14 $20 per child. Limited to 6 January 8, April 16, May 7, 2022 Join Chef Randy as a Junior Chef for MCC Chopped Jr.!

Create meals from scratch using pre-selected ingredients. Each participant choose one ingredient selected by Chef Randy.

CULTURAL START January 20, February 10 and March 31, 2022 The City of Miramar’s commitment to the Arts and Culture in the community starts with providing an opportunity for young children to become global citizens through an initiative called Cultural Start at MCC. This program is designed for four-year-old students participating in a Pre-K program in Miramar and neighboring cities.

Children participate in a field trip experience to watch global traditions and cultures come alive on stage!

THE ROBIN HOOD: HOW A HERO CAME TO BE! June 21 – 24, 2022 A world premiere written by Robyn Eli Brenner, an incredible local playwright. The legendary tale gets a new take on how the entitled Sir Robin of Locksley becomes the caped crusader for the downtrodden known as The Robin Hood. This funny, zany take on the classic brings comedy, music, and joy right to your students to help teach them that being hero isn’t about their size of their sword or their pocketbook but the size of their heart!

Suggested for Kindergarten through 8th grade.

EXHIBITS The Ansin Family Art Gallery at MCC Admission is free. Mondays to Thursdays – 9:30 am – 4:30 pm.

The Ansin Family Art Gallery at MCC presents art exhibits throughout the year that provide inspiration for both children and adults. Our exhibits are often regarded as a teaching tool that stimulates and educates, providing visitors of all ages the experience to empathize and improve their visual analysis skills. You are encouraged to share in a gallery experience this season.

Hispanic Heritage exhibit: Our Art, Our Power 2021 – 2022

EXHIBITS

September 15 to October 17 The most important exchanges and contributions between Spain, Hispanic America and the United States have been related to the arts. Art in all its manifestations has left and continues to leave its mark on the evolution of our culture, that which we understand as the most genuine expression of our collective voice. Our purpose is to provide a glimpse of the immense impact that artists and authors have had on our artistic and social development: ART! Curated by BB Musik and Five Innovations Art.

Golden Moments- Jamaica’s Olympics Journey 1948-2021 December 16, 2021 to January 4, 2022 A Celebration of Jamaica’s Athletics Legacy in Acrylic on canvas, this exhibit represents a tribute to Jamaica’s Track athletes who have worked selflessly to bring glory to the island through hard work and sacrifice in contributing to Jamaica’s dominance on the global Track and Field stage.

Curated by artist Richard Hugh Blackford.

Art-in-Lockdown: An Exhibition Featuring the Kindred Collections of Interwoven Breast Cancer Art and Sheltered in Place Pandemic Art October 25 to December 12 This exhibit chronicles the challenging time we find ourselves living through. Drawing parallels between cancer and COVID-19, Art-in-Lockdown Exhibition explores their similar journeys. Depictions of poignancy, evocativeness, renewal and awakening are displayed with the hope of facilitating healing in difficult times. Curated by Art Garden Productions.

Black History exhibit: WHO ARE THE HEROES IN OUR STORY? January 12 to March 6, 2022 An exhibit that delves into the social, economic, and political stories of African Americans; showcasing facets that have been historically glossed over or ignored in mainstream narratives and history books. It will present both the atrocities and hidden figures to conquer the subject matter and offer how African American contributions have paved the way and advanced modern society while still having been marginalized. Who are the Heroes in Our Story recommends some answers often not included but highly relevant. An MCC Presents Curated exhibit.

Human/Nature - A series of soft-sculpture portraits March 16 to May 8, 2022

Domestic objects, such as worn clothing or used sheets, which would otherwise be discarded or forgotten, are given a second life through the combined use of various fiber techniques, such as immersion dye, pattern making, sewing, crochet, weaving, knitting, upholstery, embroidery, and more. Artist Amanda Madrigal works tirelessly to celebrate and re-stitch the literal fabric of our past and reflects on the relationships we have with each other, nature, architecture, and time. Her work both imitates and distorts reality through the use of familiar yet unexpected forms.

Roots of Irma May 18 to May 29.

Photo artist Ryan Fitzroy focuses on unearthed roots which symbolize the uprooted lives of those affected by Hurricane Irma.

Caribbean Heritage exhibit: COUNTER VALENCE II June 6 to August 7 The images tell an inspiring story of Haitian life, set in its picturesque, tropical backdrop. Through reminiscent photographs and innocent diary accounts, multimedia artist Zeek Mathias contrasts the general thought of the country’s poverty with the reality of its richness of culture, historical contribution and human resilience.

In Public Places Vanishing View Come and discover Alison Sky’s Vanishing View artwork in the MCC Botanical Garden. The piece is made of a water feature with 7 glass panels, an inspiration drawn from nature, the ecosystem and the gorgeous Miramar sky.

Windows To Our World MCC’s Botanical Garden’s public art exhibits include murals entitled ‘Windows To Our World’. Windows To Our World utilizes the building’s architectural cathedral indentations shaped like windows to open guests to several themes - Hispanic Heritage, Black History, The Environment and Caribbean Heritage.

These themes will continue work already being designed for programming of the facility’s Ansin Family Art Gallery.

Lebo Sculpture: Peace in Our Time An engaging, interactive piece.

In partnership with Metro Group Miami. LEBO’s 20-foot sculpture entitled “Peace in Our Time” features LEBO’s iconic characters, inspired by Tibetan prayer wheels. This interactive design can be spun manually, and from October 2021 to April 2022 will watch over your WISHES in the Botanical Garden. LEBO is David Le Batard, a famed artist that traces Miramar and Cuba as part of his roots. This sculpture helps us celebrate the diversity we enjoy and how WISHES can become DREAMS. “Peace in Our Time,” will offer everyone an opportunity to write their LIFES’ DESIRES by tying their own SEED around our Botanical Garden trees. See you in the garden!
