MESSAGES FROM MIRAMAR’S CITY OFFICIALS GIVING THANKS IN 2016 While we are grateful for each day, we are about to enter into the time of year when we focus more readily on our continued blessings and the City of Miramar has many reasons for us to give thanks.

Just a few years ago, our nation was in the midst of a recession and Miramar was no exception. Foreclosures and many hardships hit some of our friends and neighbors. Today the economic outlook is bright for our city. For the third year in a row, property values are up by 8% and Miramar is rated as the 13th fastest growing economy in the nation by WalletHub.com. We continue to attract companies to our city that provide high paying jobs. There is more work to be done on the economic front but Miramar is on the rise and we are much better today than we were just three years ago.

Another reason for us to be thankful is the successful completion of our LEED Silver Certified Police Headquarters. This facility better equips our police department in keeping our community safe. Our city’s most recent accomplishment is the opening of the Pembroke Road Overpass which provides much anticipated relief to the Miramar Parkway I-75 corridor.

Now, as we all prepare for the official day of Thanksgiving, we are all looking forward to spending time with family and preparing for the holiday season. I encourage all residents to keep those who may be facing difficult times in our prayers. There are many opportunities to serve at a food pantry, houses of worship and other community efforts to feed the homeless, jobless and sick. I also would like to take this time to thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your mayor. If I can ever be of assistance, I am only a phone call or email away. Miramar is a wonderful city and together, there is nothing our city can’t do. We have so much to be proud of and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.

I hope that everyone had a fun summer and has adjusted to the children being back in school. Already this school year, I have been providing support at several of the Miramar schools and am looking forward to volunteering with the KAPOW (Kids And the Power Of Work) program again this year.

On October 15, I will be hosting a Family Fun Day from 10am-2pm at the courtyard at City Hall. We will have a Kids Fun Zone, Food Trucks, a Business Expo and more! In addition, I will be unveiling my new initiative: Community First.

I am thrilled to be able to bring this program to Miramar and I look forward to sharing it with all of you. I hope to see you there.

We are still in Hurricane Season, so be sure to have your family’s plan in place and start purchasing the necessary supplies. By preparing now, you will save yourself unnecessary stress and anxiety should a storm approach.

During the last several months, I have been meeting with residents, hosted a Community Forum on the status of lakes & canals and gave away hundreds of backpacks at Back-To-School events.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays! My wish for you is that you enjoy these holidays with your family, friends and those who are most precious to you.

MESSAGES FROM MIRAMAR’S CITY OFFICIALS A CASE FOR INCREASED VOTER TURNOUT As the political/election season heats up heading to the presidential elections in November, and close to the second citizenship drive I will be hosting, there are a number of contemplations for us to consider.

In the primary elections of August, 2016, certain estimates put voter turnout at as low as 17 percent in Broward County. That means that less than two persons in every ten are making decisions for the large majority of others.

It was a veteran Massachusetts politician who decades ago asserted most appropriately that all politics is local. Yes, people become all excited about presidential elections, especially in a year of controversy in addition to the usual drama which comes with any presidential election, this is of greater interest and relevance.

So as residents of this fair city, there is a need for more involvement on the part of all residents. One of the major responsibilities of a citizen is recognizing that having a deep knowledge of how government and its various departments, especially the policy making body, operate is not enough. Residents must also act out the role citizens are called on to play; major of which is casting ballots; becoming engaged at the most fundamental level in how government operates and how citizens maintain their true control of what government is; of the people and by the people.

Therefore, I am asking you, as your Commissioner and more importantly as a concerned, Miramar resident, to please get out and vote this November 2016 and let your voice be heard.

Dear Neighbors, I continue to be committed to addressing the concerns of the residents of Miramar.

A dream...turned vision...turned project will soon become reality. It has been my passion and mission for the City of Miramar to have a safe, socially interactive place for our senior citizens that would otherwise be homebound. With a licensed nursing staff, certified nursing assistants and experienced activities coordinator our adult day care will provide recreation for the participants and peace of mind for their families. We are now on the heels of the completion of this brand new facility located at 8915 Miramar Parkway with an expected grand opening in the fall of 2016.

Part of Building and maintaining a great community requires passing responsible and conscientious legislation. The Miramar Commission approved the Puppy Mill Ordinance on August 17th. This Law will aid in fostering the ethical and humane treatment of animals in our city. There are so many animals in rescue shelters that need a nice home and the ban on the retail sale of animals from puppy mills will certainly help to find them homes.

At our September 7th Commission Meeting residents attended and spoke about their concerns with the blasting that is occurring near our city limits and its impact on our community. My colleagues and I unanimously approved a resolution to have the City Attorney conduct research on how the blasting near Miramar can be mitigated. The report on the research is scheduled to be included on the October 19th Commission Meeting agenda.

MESSAGES FROM MIRAMAR’S CITY OFFICIALS Dear Resident, The last year and half as commissioner has been an absolute privilege. I have had the opportunity to work with our youth, seniors, faith leaders, community leaders, City staff, and of course you our residents. I have also had the pleasure of doing a number of initiatives that I know for a fact has improved the quality of life here in the city of Miramar. For example, my team and I have started a food pantry at Miramar Elementary for families in need. Thanksgiving is around the corner, and we have partnered up with our local Walmart for an awesome turkey giveaway event.

We cannot end the year without a toy drive for our kids, therefore; we’ve partnered with numerous churches and businesses here in our city to provide our children with a toy on Christmas Day. I am also very proud of all the jobs that we have created this past year. It has instituted an opportunity for local jobs to be available for local people.

I have created a year-at-a-glance flyer, which has my complete schedule of upcoming events that you can pick up at any city facility.

I am thankful for the opportunity to serve you, and I look forward to your participation in our upcoming schedule.

MIRAMAR IS RECOGNIZED FOR ITS DISCO SOUP EVENT Over the August 18-20 weekend, the Florida League of Cities (FLC) held its annual conference at the Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida.

This year’s conference, “Florida Cities: United and Strong,” featured over 1,000 city officials from across Florida, but what made this event particularly special was receiving the 2016 City Spirit award! As one of the prestigious Florida Municipal Achievement Awards presented by the FLC, the City Spirit Award recognizes a specific, single, citywide effort to successfully address a local need. Miramar was honored to receive this award for the Miramar Community Garden’s Disco Soup initiative held in February.

“Miramar remains a leader in sustainability and believes in its power to unite a community. The Disco Soup events allow Miramar to educate, train and entertain our community right in our

community garden. I am pleased to know for generations to come that Disco Soup will leave a legacy in our city,” said Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam. Special thanks again to all those staff and volunteers who continue to contribute their time and effort to make the Community Garden and the Disco Soup event award winning!

HOOPS FOR HOPE OVERVIEW Hoops 4 Hope’s goal is to use education, basketball and scholarships to engage the community with hopes of directing them to greater opportunities that are located “Right here in Miramar.” The Miramar Police Department and the Miramar Police Athletic League organized a basketball tournament to commence with a college fair for enhanced exposure to higher education. The donations received from Hoops 4 Hope will be utilized for college scholarships for two Miramar based high school students.

There are specific requirements for the applicants to qualify for the scholarships. All eligible students must attend high school within the city of Miramar (public/private), submit a 500 word essay on Criminal Justice in the 21st Century, submit a copy of their report card and a nomination letter from a school official or School Resource Officer at their school. All documents must be sent to Officer B. Parker at bparker@miramarpd.org by March 2017. The recipients will be selected before the end of the school year and their oversized checks will be presented at the 2017 Hoops 4 Hope basketball tournament.

SYNOPSIS On August 19, 2016 Hoops 4 Hope had its inaugural 3-on-3 basketball tournament showcase at the Youth Enrichment Center.

There were eight competitive basketball teams who registered for the tournament. The tournament was double elimination, which allowed each team to compete twice before being eliminated. The championship game consisted of Walker Chiropractic and No-Excuses going head-to-head for an opportunity to win a championship trophy and a $100 dollar pre-paid MasterCard for each player. Walker Chiropractic was victorious in the championship game, while No-Excuses finished in second place. NoExcuses and the third place team, The Sharks, were awarded medals.

The spectators also had a chance to win big at Hoops 4 Hope. After each game, there was a raffle drawing for restaurant gift cards, a Stok grill or a Ryobi hammer drill set. All of the proceeds benefited Hoops 4 Hope.

Unilantina International College, Ana G. Mendez University, Concorde University, University of Phoenix, and the ARMY participated in the college fair. All of the colleges agreed to waive the registration fee for interested students or parents who showed an interest in registering. Promotional items from the colleges and the ARMY were also provided to prospective students.

With the support of the community and all organizations involved, this was a great opportunity that exposed over a hundred students or adults to educational opportunities and various community resources. All of the donations and fundraisers that made Hoops 4 Hope successful were greatly appreciated by the members of the Miramar Police Department and the Miramar Police Athletic League. Two students will receive a $1,000 college scholarship towards a college of their choice.

The 2016 Hurricane Season began June 1 and we encourage all residents to take the time to prepare their families and homes for hurricanes and related impacts. Hurricanes are one of nature’s most powerful and destructive natural disasters that we face.

It only takes one to change your life. It’s not just major hurricanes that we need to worry about. Hurricanes such as Sandy and Isaac remind us that significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane at landfall.

As the season begins, now is the time to prepare. Here is what you can to do get ready: KNOW YOUR RISK To search for general information about risks in your area, visit www.ready.gov and search under State of Florida. Or check out Weather-Ready Nation’s link as well www.nws.noaa.gov/com/ weatherreadynation/hurricane_ preparedness.html Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem.

High winds, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flooding can be felt hundreds of miles inland, potentially causing loss of life and catastrophic damage to property. Check out NOAA’s historical hurricane tracks tool to check the severity and frequency of past hurricanes in your area.

GET PREPARED As the storm approaches, it is often too late to get ready. Before hurricane season, make sure you: •

Know your zone. Evacuations are more common than people realize. Make yourself familiar with your community’s evacuation zones, so you’ll know exactly where to go. Remember, if a hurricane threatens your community and local officials say it’s time to evacuate, don’t hesitate -- go early.

Complete a family communication plan.

Plan how you will assemble your family and loved ones, and anticipate where you will go for different situations. Get together with your family and agree on the ways to contact one another in an emergency, identify meeting locations, and make a Family Emergency Communication Plan.

Download the FEMA app. The FEMA app includes disaster resources, weather alerts, safety tips, and a new feature that will enable users to receive push notifications to their devices to prepare their homes and families for disasters. The app also provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and recovery centers, tips on how to survive disasters, and weather alerts from the National Weather Service.

Check your insurance coverage. Many states have increased deductibles for hurricanes and not all hurricane-related losses are covered under traditional policies. Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage or losses from flooding. Review your policy, ensure you’re adequately covered and understand exclusions, and contact your agent for any changes. If you’re not insured against flood, talk to your agent or visit www.floodsmart.gov. Renter’s insurance policies are also available and should be considered as a way of protecting your belongings.

STAY INFORMED Know where to go for trusted sources of information during a hurricane event. Sign up for alerts from your local emergency management office so notifications, including evacuation orders, go directly to your phone and email. Monitor local news for hurricane watches and warnings in your area and follow directions of local officials. Make sure you have a battery-operated or hand-crank radio available should the power go out.

THE AMERICAN DREAM REALIZED The last four months have been gratifying for the Community and Economic Development Department. Between April and August of this year, seven families became homeowners for the first time thanks to the State Housing Initiative Program (SHIP) and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

The City’s Housing Programs include the Purchase Assistance Program which provides down payment and closing cost assistance to very-low, low and moderate income first-time homebuyers.

Maggie, a vibrant senior citizen was one of four homebuyers who received SHIP purchase assistance and is now the proud owner of a two-bedroom townhome. Dorothea, a single mom received $140,000 in NSP purchase assistance and is eagerly waiting to move into her threebedroom single family home.

More than 150 bicylists, runners and walkers christened the Pembroke Road Overpass on Saturday, September 17th by participating in a 5k run benefitting charity-- and officially ushering in a new way to get from east-to-west in Miramar!

Officials from both cities who share the overpass were present, including Miramar Vice Mayor Maxwell B. Chambers and Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis, as well as Broward County Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief, who represents both cities on the county level. This project has taken more than seven years to come to fruition! Special thanks to all who came out including all vendors and residents.

On Saturday, December 10, 8 PM, you become the star. MCC puts local talent in the spotlight with Miramar’s Got Talent: Special Holiday Edition.

Concert performers Will & Anthony Nunziata host this showcase of community talent vying for prizes in a special Holiday extravaganza.

The Phantoms…Unmasked! stars John Cudia, Gary Mauer and Grant Norman. They will perform showstoppers from Les Misérables, Man of La Mancha, Jekyll & Hyde, West Side Story, The Phantom of the Opera and more, joined onstage by a chorus of area rising talent.

IT’S RIGHT HER It was a busy summer here in The City of Miramar! It usually brings us lots of rain, wind and possible hurricanes, but it also blew in some high-profile celebrities who came to visit our town of beauty and progress.

In June, we welcomed Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Jon B., who’s written and produced songs for Toni Braxton, Luther Vandross, the Spice Girls and Michael Jackson (“You Are Not Alone” remix.)

He also has had his own chart-topping hits with “They Don’t Know” and “Someone to Love”, just to name a few. Jon B spoke to our City employees for the Men’s Health Luncheon about the importance of staying fit and his new workout regime, getting rid of vices that may be hindering their personal health (his was drinking) and getting back into the studio, doing something he loves and getting ready to release his new album in 2017!

Former Miami Dolphin Twan Russell was also a guest speaker at our Men’s Bridging the Gap luncheon and spoke about keeping up your mental health as well as physical—particularly if you were a former athlete and now you are not as active as before.

RE IN MIRAMAR! This was apparently a very good month for Miramar. Two weeks later in June, the next celebrity to blow into town was actor/producer Lamman Rucker, better known as “Sheriff Troy” in the Tyler Perry movies, Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too? and on Perry’s sitcom on TBS, Meet The Browns. He was in town to promote his new dramatic series, Greenleaf, which is co-produced by and costars Oprah Winfrey on her own network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network.) The show premiered to record numbers and has already been renewed for a second season! Lamman even sat in and co-hosted Good Morning Miramar w/Tamara G. on It’s Right Here in Miramar radio–of course, it was just her luck to be on vacation.

George Bettinger, a Miramar resident and host of the Mom and Pop Shop on Tune-in radio (which can also be heard Monday & Wednesday at 4pm on It’s Right Here in Miramar radio), co-hosted the show along with two Miramar residents, Melvin Roane and Ellen Wood, who both won a City-sponsored contest to sit in with Lamman and George.

But the coup de gras was in September when Miramar Town Center was graced with the presence of the 42nd President of The United States, Bill Clinton. Everything was on the hush-hush, but we knew something was happening when the parking lot and most of City Hall Plaza was blocked off with barricades. SOUTH CENTRAL/SOUTHEAST FOCAL POINT ADULT DAY CARE CENTER

The City of Miramar South Central/Southeast Focal Point Adult Day Care Center is a licensed non-residential adult day care services program that provides supervised care to adults 18 years of age or older in a supportive and safe setting. The program provides services that include; but are not limited to, therapeutic activities, nutrition, health and personal care, and transportation.
