TOGETHER we are miramar Miramar Residents Tell Their Stories in Mini-Documentary “Together, We Are Miramar”
The storytelling project, funded by the Community Foundation of Broward, is led by Director Kenny Riches and Project Director, Tameka Hobbs, who also serves on the Miramar Cultural Trust’s board. “It’s been great. I have gotten a chance to meet some wonderful and talented people who are sharing their gifts with the South Florida community, but who call Miramar home,” said Hobbs. Hobbs says the participating Miramar residents are from Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, and different regions of the United States, representing the diversity of the Miramar community. As they experienced art gallery exhibit “Soaring: The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen in South Florida”, and live performances including Peter London’s “Fire in the Coal Pot”, Elvis Presley tribute “One Night in Memphis”, and “Black Angels Over Tuskegee”, the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, Hobbs says they started to see MCC through a new and appreciative lens. She added, “Everyone was blown away by the programs.”
On April 8, the 20-minute story, “Together, We Are Miramar”, premieres at the Miramar Cultural Center, an event free and open to the public. The mini-documentary tells the story of the Miramar Cultural Center through the eyes of eight Miramar residents and their families. Participants were selected after a call to the community went out to Miramar residents and businesses prior to the start of the cultural center’s 2017-18 season. From October 2017 through March 2018, a camera crew followed the selected eight volunteers as they experienced visual art, live performances, and cultural events at MCC. For some, it was their first experience in their home town’s theater, and for others, the center evoked feelings of familiarity.

It became a personally touching experience for her, as well, the more she learned about each of the volunteers’ intimate stories. She looks forward to the greater Miramar community connecting with the individual stories in the same way, while also gaining a new appreciation for MCC and the arts and cultural experiences happening right here in Miramar. “What I want people to walk away with is a sense of pride, generally in the community of Miramar, but specifically in the excellent programming that is put on the at the Miramar Cultural Center,” said Hobbs. “Together, We Are Miramar” will premiere during a FREE family-friendly event hosted by MCC and Florida Grand Opera at the Miramar Cultural Center on Sunday, April 8 at 1PM. Other events happening throughout the day include voice lessons with FGO, stage make-up application, a costume tour, and a 30-minute Florida Grand Opera performance.

Miramar Fire Rescue Making It Okay to Talk about
Post-Traumatic Stress and Suicide with RACHEL’S CHALLENGE
Rachel Joy Scott was a high school student and the first person shot and killed during the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. Her mission, even then in high school, was to combat bullying and ensure that all people are treated with compassion and kindness. Rachel’s uncle, Larry Scott, travels around the country sharing Rachel’s message through presentations and speaking engagements. Marie G. Guma, a psychologist specialized in treating those with substance abuse, will also present to attendees. “We’ve partnered with a bunch of different organizations, found psychologists who work with firefighters and paramedics, as well as formed alliances with members of the military. This is in an effort to bring as many resources as possible to attack a major problem,” said Gregorisch.
The statistics are staggering. A survey of more than 4,000 first responders found that 6.6 percent had attempted suicide, more than 10 times the rate of the general population, according to a 2015 article published in the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. “We are human beings. We have feelings. It’s not really accepted and the big thing is to change this perception that we are super human. We are not,” said Jose Gregorisch, Public Information Officer for the Miramar Fire Rescue Department. Miramar Fire Rescue is trying to get ahead of the problem of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that first responders can experience after repeatedly seeing things in their career that many don’t ever see in a lifetime.

“We have not had someone here at Miramar Fire Rescue take their own lives, but we do know that we want to get ahead of it. We don’t want it to reach the point that someone dies by suicide. We know that it is something we need to address because it has happened at other municipalities close to us,” said Gregorisch. Gregorisch says it’s equally important that Miramar Fire Rescue becomes a resource to the community through social and emotional training. On April 18 and 19 at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, a total of four training sessions, open to the public, will be offered by Miramar Fire Rescue. Trainings like these have been found to decrease the rate of suicides among all, including not only first responders, but also those in schools, businesses and throughout our community. This Miramar Fire Rescue community priority is called Rachel’s Challenge.

the audience and the judges. There’s something here. We had no expectations throughout the whole experience of the show, but we knew we were going to do our jobs by just working hard and enjoying every moment, connecting with people and being as present as we could throughout the process. We just kept getting further and further along and the audience kept voting us through. Eventually, we placed fourth on the show. It was mind blowing. Micah Christian
Since then, we’ve been performing all over the country, Canada and the Caribbean, as well. It’s been a real blessing. We left our day jobs and have been completely committed to this and this journey. M: “America’s Got Talent” judges Howie Mandel and Howard Stern called you “the most musically talented act on the show”. What was your reaction to that? MC: It was encouraging to hear something like that being said and just the fact that we were even on that stage. It helped us to see what we were doing mattered.
“America’s Got Talent” Finalists Sons of Serendip Perform Stevie Wonder Songs in a Way Never Heard Before Sons of Serendip, named for the serendipitous way the four members of this musical group came together, accomplished a career milestone that so many musicians only dream of. The group earned a spot on top primetime television show “America’s Got Talent” Season 9. Micah Christian, lead vocalist, couldn’t believe it saying, “The audience kept voting us through.” Sons of Serendip finished in fourth place during their season, but a new musical chapter in their lives was just beginning. The City of Miramar goes one-on-one with Micah Christian to talk about his “America’s Got Talent” experience and their new live show they are bringing to the Miramar Cultural Center on April 13. Miramar: Tell me about your experience auditioning and making it on the show “America’s Got Talent”.
Those comments helped us to see that all of this hard work we were putting in was paying off. We received a lot of letters and emails from people from all over who had been watching the show. They were talking about how the music touched their lives and helped them with healing and comfort and feeling peace and feeling joy. That really encouraged us and helped us see that it is making some kind of difference. M: What can the audience expect from your show “50 songs in the Key of Wonder” at the Miramar Cultural Center? MC: Stevie Wonder was one of my biggest influences. I was very excited about having this opportunity to put together a concert and celebrate his music, but also he’s one of those genius artists and he’s been a part of our lives in so many ways. The audience can expect to hear a bunch of Stevie songs, but they are going to be played in a way that they had never heard before. Part of what we do is take popular music and we rearrange it and we try to make it fresh for people, almost like they are hearing the songs for the first time. We’re going to be sharing that music and also doing a little storytelling. There’s even an original song that we wrote that will be in there as well. It’s one of our favorite shows and we are excited to do this. M: How do you think the audience, who knows you from “America’s Got Talent” will react to this show?
Micah Christian: We got a call from them three weeks after we sent them the audition tape. They asked information about the group. As they got more information, they said “Do you want to audition in front of the judges?”. We were like “Yes!”. Based on sending them song ideas and trying to figure out what would be the best song for the audition, we settled on Somewhere Only We Know, which is originally by Keane.
MC: I think they are going to be surprised. This show is a very different show than what people are used to hearing from us. I think that whether you’ve been to a concert before or if you saw us on “America’s Got Talent”, I don’t know if you can anticipate what it will be like. We put a lot of creativity into this and it’s very different.
We get out there on the stage for the audition and it was a moment for us where we were like “We might have something here” and part of it was the reaction to the harp. We brought the harp out and immediately the crowd started cheering. Then when we played, we got a really good response from

RECYCLING AND SOLID WASTE GUIDELINE RECYCLING GUIDE Residents can place all recyclables together in the same Blue recycling cart or bin. Collection is provided once per week, with no service on Sunday or Christmas Day. Carts or Bins must be placed curbside by 7 A.M. on its scheduled collection day. RECYCLABLE MATERIALS INCLUDE: Plastic bottles #1 – 7, with necks narrower than the bottle, such as soda, milk, water and detergent bottles (caps off please) Newspaper, inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper, soft covered books, file folders, soda cartons, cereal, rice and pasta boxes Clear, Brown or Green glass food and beverage containers Flatten cardboard boxes and plastic bottles to maximize space Please use only clear bags. DO NOT PLACE WITH RECYCLABLE Household garbage, food scraps, miscellaneous plastics such as hoses, toys, plastic bags, window or auto glass, light bulbs, mirrors, glass cookware, bake-ware or ceramics, Yard Debris, Medical Waste or Pharmaceuticals. Placing these items in the recycle cart or bin will contaminate the recyclables.
BULK WASTE REMOVAL Bulk collection is provided once per month on your scheduled collection day. Bulk Waste includes, but is not limited to: yard waste, appliances (with Freon removed), furniture, carpet and padding, and tree branches. No item should be longer than 6 feet, or weigh more than 50 pounds. Large glass items, such as tables or mirrors, must be placed in a wrapping strong enough that the container may be safely lifted while containing its contents. To help expedite the collection process and prevent property damage do not place bulky items near collection carts, mail, utility boxes, signs, power poles, sewer drains, trees, vehicles or other damageable property. DO NOT PLACE BULK ITEMS OUT FOR COLLECTION MORE THAN 24 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED COLLECTION DAY, AS YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO RECEIVING A NOTICE OF VIOLATION.

ADOPT-A-STREET PROGRAM The Adopt-A-Street program is a cooperative clean-up campaign that offers a, “hands on” approach to City beautification through litter removal and maintenance of designated streets. Take an active role in this rewarding volunteer litter control program in your community.
The City provides residents multiple opportunities to recycle HHW and E-waste materials. The City hosts an Annual drop-off collection Event within the City limits each January. Additionally, on the first Saturday of each month, between 8 A.M. and 4 P.M. at no cost residents can dropoff these materials at the Waste Pro Operating Facility located at 17302 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, 33029. All City of Miramar residents receiving curbside collection service are required to use City issued Green wheeled carts for disposal of residential solid waste. Collection is provided twice per week, with no service on Sunday or Christmas Day. Solid Waste carts must be placed curbside by 7 A.M. To help prevent damage to your carts, lids should be closed and arrows pointing towards the street.
