MESSAGE FROM MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM Hello Mirimarians! The City of Miramar is recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Irma and I hope you, your families and neighbors are doing well. We have a lot of work to do to get our City back to what we know as normal but in light of what others both in our State and in other locations have suffered, we must be grateful that the effects to our city were minimal and manageable. Our Emergency Operations Center was put to its first test in our new police headquarters and our Emergency Response professionals were well equipped and prepared. We had roadways cleared within a day to allow residents and businesses to maneuver through the streets. The City provided much needed food, water and other assistance to residents in need. City staff ensured intersections were safe and worked tirelessly to ensure all major damages were fixed that impacted public safety. The Police Department even purchased temporary street lights that worked while the existing lights were temporarily down. As we recover and rebuild the city of Miramar will work to complete the citywide hurricane debris hauling process. Miramar Social Services Department located at 6700 Miramar Parkway is available to assist residents complete claims to FEMA, SBA and state agencies for their damages and losses from Hurricane Irma. MIRAMAR PD HANGING WITH 5-0 PROGRAM Miramar Police Department’s Hangin’ with 5-0 program is a six-week summer program that serves 80 students, ages 9-14, from local schools. It is offered to students who have been identified by school resource officers and other students, deemed positive role models, participate in the day-to-day activities and fieldtrips. Classes on gang awareness, gun safety, drug prevention, and bullying are given. The 5-0 camp has also implemented the Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R) program. Students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes, at least twice a week. The books used, have been donated from Silver Lakes Elementary and the Miramar Regional Library. Breakfast and lunch also are served, at no cost to the students. Sunbeam Properties and the Miramar Park of Commerce have once again made a generous donation of $15,000, to keep kids Hangin’ with 5-0.

This was a destructive storm that will have a lasting effect on South Florida. Here at the City, we worked diligently to maintain our residents’ safety and well-being before, during and after the storm. We will continue our efforts to support the recovery process until things are restored to pre-Irma status. But remember, hurricane season lasts until November 30, so be sure to maintain your family’s plan and replenish necessary supplies you may have used during Irma. To this effort, I am pleased to announce the Commission approved two major infrastructure projects totaling $47 Million dollars: Phase 3 Historic Miramar Infrastructure Improvement, to upgrade our drainage system and increasing flooding protection; and the renovation of the East Water Plant, to improve water quality. In June, I held my third annual Homeowner’s Association Roundtable. Participants gained insight in upcoming legislations, transportation improvement projects and the American Dream Mall planned near Miramar in Miami Dade County.

On July 29th we completed our 3rd Annual Back to school bookbag Give-away providing 1,000 students with a free bookbag. Additionally, on August 8th, we were also able to educate 2,000 families on Hands Only CPR in case of an emergency. We recently completed the budget process, and we would love to provide you with information on how some of your priorities were funded. If you have not had an opportunity to participate in one of our events there is still time. The Taste of Miramar will take place on November 4th at Miramar Town Center 2300 Civic Center Place from 6pm-9pm, and your presence would be greatly appreciated.
