DIRECTOR’S ADDRESS I consider myself fortunate to work in a community that places a high value on collaboration to strengthen families and improve their lives.

Here at the City of Miramar Community Services Department, our dedicated staff is passionate about the work they do and, together with our community partners, we work to help those in need. Together we provide a network of support to individuals and families to build healthier communities.

OVERVIEW

SERVICES

Located in an urban area in the southernmost part of Broward County, the City of Miramar is 14 miles in length from east to west and 2.5 miles in width. The City of Miramar is the third largest city in Broward County in terms of land size and the 5th largest city in Broward in terms of population. The senior centers operate as a division of the City of Miramar’s Community Services Department. The support and funding of the senior center is generously provided both through the City of Miramar as well as through funds received by the Aging Disability Resource Center of Broward County. The senior center has been improving and expanding its services for more than 40 years and in July 2015, through the RFP process, the City was designated the Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point (SCSEFP). This designation expanded the client service area to the south central and southeast sectors of Broward County to include not only the City of Miramar, but also the cities of Dania Beach, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Park and West Park. Services are provided at the Multi-Service Complex located in historic Miramar and in at the Sunset Lakes Community Center located in west Miramar.

The SCSEFP designation not only included senior center services, but under the umbrella of the SCSEFP, the City also provides licensed adult day services for persons 18 years old and older who are unable to live independently. The city is able to offer a continuum of care for senior center participants who require supervision by allowing them to transition to Adult Day Care upon decline. Administered by the City of Miramar, the program is partially funded through a contract with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Broward County, with Local Service Provider dollars. We are able to provide services such as outreach and assistance to clients who are home bound. Our services are specifically designed for older adults and are well suited to their individual needs and interests.

The Southcentral/South East Focal Point Senior Center Mission Statement The City of Miramar Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point Senior Center is a place for older adults to gather in a setting that promotes and utilizes life experiences and skills. Our mission is to encourage an atmosphere designed for healthy aging, where older adults can be empowered to actively participate and be an integral part of their community.

HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SENIOR CENTERS In July 2019, the Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point (SCSEFP) centers were re-accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers and the National Council on Aging .

TOTAL WELLNESS MONTH Senior wellness is paramount to the City of Miramar. The Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point Senior Center provides exercise modules, nutrition education and water aerobics to keep our seniors healthy.

The Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point Senior Center held its’s 2nd annual Total Wellness month February 2019 to raise awareness for Heart Month.

SENIOR HOLIDAY WALK 2019 The 4th Annual Senior Holiday Walk was held at Miramar’s Town Center, with 120 seniors completing a total of 1,700 miles. This evidenced based program was created by the Arthritis Foundation, designed to keep seniors active and living independently.

TAI CHI FOR MEMORY 2019 The Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point Senior Center became one of the first senior centers in Florida to conduct “Tai Chi for Memory”. This innovative program is endorsed by the National Council on Aging and the Arthritis Foundation.

SALT SENIOR SPRING PICNIC 2019 Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) held their annual picnic at Miramar Regional Park with city officials and over 150 seniors in attendance.

SENIORS GOT TALENT 2019 The Southcentral/Southeast Focal Point Senior Center held its first annual ‘Seniors Got Talent’ show. Crowd favorite Charlie Hudson won 1st prize with the entire crowd singing along.

2019 SENIOR SATISFACTION SURVEY The Southcentral/Southeast Focal point conducted a survey for all our seniors, asking members to rank the quality of the programs. The questions pertained to the center’s recreation programs and their overall satisfaction. The survey’s goal was to inform program development to ensure services are relevant to our seniors.
