MB kicks off the summer of ’21 with a cover story about a very special athlete from the Miami Beach Rowing Club who discovered the sport of rowing in his late 50s following a horrific accident that led to the loss of one of his legs. Now, at 65, Patrick Ward is an alternate to the U.S. Paralympic Team and his story is an inspiration to everyone. It’s hard to believe, but another hurricane season is upon us. While Miami Beach has been spared in recent years, last year’s hurricane season was the most active on record, breaking the previous record of 28 named storms set in 2005. We interviewed Miami Beach resident and WPLG-TV hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross as well as Warning Coordination Meteorologist Robert Molleda with the National Weather Service in Miami. They help us understand the lessons from 1992’s Hurricane Andrew and 2017’s Hurricane Irma. Hopefully, our story will give you a better understanding of why it’s so important to evacuate the island if you are asked to do so.
