We are here to assist you in the registration (application) process as well. Essential eligibility requirements for each program are on file. Assistive devices are available upon request.

First-Come, First-Paid: Space is limited for most of the programs we offer, and registration is accepted on a firstcome, first-paid basis. In some instances, a waiting list may be available.

MHKPRD Scholarship Policy: Some of our programs qualify for scholarships. Scholarships provide 50% off registration fees up to $150 per qualifying household. You must show proof of participation in the USD Free/Reduced Fees program, or qualification under Federal Income Availability Guidelines.

Refund Policy for Activities Requiring Registration: Registrants will receive a full refund if we cancel the program, or we may be able to transfer you to another class. A full refund is granted if request to withdraw is received 1 week (7 days) before the class or event start date. A partial refund is issued when requested between 1 week and at least 48 hours before the start date. No refunds will be granted if the request is less than 48 hours in advance or if the participant fails to show. Participant withdrawals must be received during business hours.

Sunflower Summer

Kansas residents with students enrolled in Prekindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to access one (1) FREE ticket per child to visit the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Students enrolled in 18-21 Transition Programs are also eligible for free tickets via the Sunflower Summer program. Guardians can download the Sunflower Summer app free from either Google Play (Android) or Apple (IOS) app stores. To register your account, simply open the app and follow the prompts. Via the Sunflower Summer app, each Kansas student, and their guardians (up to two adults) are provided one free visit to each participating attraction per year. Your Sunflower Summer “Passport” (in the app) will be stamped, and the ticket will no longer be accessible.

Walk and Talk: Guided Konza Hikes

Come along for an immersive experience into the Flint Hills. Each hike will offer a unique experience. Transportation is in our 15-passenger van (ages 10 and older only in the van. Tallgrass Tour: History of Flight

We’re off to Topeka for a day of flight and fun! First, visit the Museum of the Kansas National Guard, where the Soldiers and Airmen of Kansas are shown gratitude. Then enjoy lunch at a local favorite, Lonnie Q’s BBQ! The trip finishes at the Combat Air Museum where we will explore 40+ aircraft from the earliest aviation periods to present day. Round trip travel and tour fees are provided. Participants are responsible for lunch. The tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 9 AM and returns no later than 5 PM. Ages 8+ only. Pre-registration is required by Friday, August 4 at 5 PM.

We’re off to Salina for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the K-State Aerospace and Technology Campus! First, visit the K-State Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus for a day of VIP treatment with hands-on experiences and behind the scenes tours! Explore an exclusive view of flight line operations and the aviation maintenance hangar. Before heading home, we will stop at a local favorite to eat lunch! Round trip travel and tour fees are provided. Participants are responsible for lunch. The tour leaves the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 8:30 AM and returns no later than 4 PM Ages 8+ only. National Day of the Cowboy

Join the Flint Hills Discovery Center for National Day of the Cowboy, an annual celebration of the national icon and the history and culture of the American West! Wrangle up the family for a day filled with activities embracing the Wild West. Dress up as a cowboy (or cowgirl) and take a western style photo, then brush up on your cowboy skills.

Programs

Zoofari Tails at the Zoo Frogwatch for Families

Sunset Zoo and the Manhattan Public Library team up to present a fun animal-themed story time for ages 3 and up with books on the big screen, active songs, and lots of animal sounds and poses. Sunset Zoo is hosting this Zoofari Tails and all guests attending are admitted to the Zoo for free.

Painting with the Animals

During this unique experience, families will visit a featured animal and use their powers to create a masterpiece. To kick off your experience, Sunset Zoo staff will introduce the featured animal, highlighting fun facts about the individuals in our care at the Zoo. After the brief introduction and interaction with related animal artifacts, families will be guided through a painting experience using tempera paint and 8x10 canvases. Depending on the featured animal, experiences may take place in the zoo at the animal’s habitat or in a space more conducive to viewing the featured animal.

Join us for this fun family program to learn about the conservation efforts of frogs and toads in and around our area. Training will occur and an overnight observation will happen. During your overnight experience, you will get a chance to hear and maybe even see frogs and toads in action! This activity is geared for pre-teens and their families. Cost is $30 per family, and registration is limited.

Mother’s Day at Sunset Zoo

All moms are admitted free to the Zoo on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 14. Bring mom and the entire family for an adventure to visit with some of our amazing animals. While supplies last, mom will also be given a special treat upon entry. Regular admission rates apply to other guests.
