August 2020

A

s a most unusual summer draws near a close, I continue to be impressed by the extraordinary resilience and creativity demonstrated by our community members. Although we had to forego many of our traditional events in the spirit of safeguarding community health this summer, residents still found a myriad of ways to safely engage with others and experience all our city has to enjoy. Our fall schedule will continue to be challenged with impacts from COVID-19 and any uncertainty that comes with it. However, I am sure you will find resources in this year’s Fall Activity Guide that will provide opportunities for you and your family. While several community events have been cancelled, the Meridian Arts Commission will be celebrating Meridian Art Week in September with a variety of activities that will be done with COVID-19 in mind. The popular Meridian Art Drop will definitely be back, so you might want to begin thinking about what small pieces of handmade art you and your family can make to hide around the community for others to find and keep. Meridian Art Week will take place September 9-12, so take a look and see how you can get out and enjoy this event.

Mayor’s Message Meridian is blessed to have a burgeoning arts community that is increasingly vibrant and diverse – especially in our parks. During the spring, new public art pieces were installed in two of our City parks. While we were not able to hold ceremonies for these new installations, these two new pieces of public art are a great way to get out with the family and enjoy our parks in the fall. You can look for the colorful arches of Illuminations by metal artist Ken McCall in Renaissance Park located in south Meridian and the Champion’s Flame kinetic metal art piece by Trademark Design and Fabrication in Champion Park in north Meridian. And if you want to not just enjoy our parks, but check out all the public art in Meridian, there is a guide on the City of Meridian website. Spend some time getting to know our pathways and find your way to these gathering spots around the community and enjoy these great community amenities. Until next time, stay safe and healthy and remember to take time out to be creative!

Sincerely, Robert Simison

Mayor Robert Simison
