In this new program, you'll drive a pedicab for a leisurely trip through picturesque Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park with a maximum of two senior citizen passengers. All drivers will be asked to complete a training course prior to their first trip with passengers.

Positions up for election are currently held by Mayor Mike Boehm and council members Steve Lemons (Ward 1), Tom Nolte (Ward 2), Dan Roh (Ward 3) and Andy Huckaba (Ward 4). If three or more people file for election for one position, a primary election will be held Aug. 6. The general election will be held Nov. 5.

PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ROLLS AHEAD As the tulips and fresh grass sprout up around Lenexa, so will the orange cones. More than 40 lane miles of Lenexa streets are scheduled to receive surface treatments starting in early spring to help maintain a quality street network.

Lenexa takes a proactive approach to road maintenance through its Pavement Management Program.

Strategically applying new surface treatments improves the look and rideability of our roads and prevents costly, disruptive future repairs.

Lenexa has budgeted $6.8 million for preventative maintenance in 2019. Work will occur across the city.

Planned projects One of Lenexa's most well-known stretches of roadway is scheduled for mill and overlay work this year: 87th Street Parkway from Pflumm Road to Quivira Road. Half of this project will be funded by Johnson County's County Assistance Road System program.

About 11.5 lane miles of streets in business parks near I-435, plus a section of Clare Road between Prairie Star Parkway and 83rd Street, will also receive a new surface treatment.

About 12 lane miles of residential streets in neighborhoods scattered throughout Lenexa will receive a coat of ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface (UBAS). Application of UBAS moves quickly, and you can drive on the new surface soon after it is applied.

In addition to applying new surface treatments, crews will also repair deteriorated curb and sidewalks in the residential areas and upgrade curb ramps.

Quick tips: Get an early start on outdoor home improvements Even before grass starts to sprout, there's still plenty to do outdoors to make sure your home is in top shape and compliant with City codes. Here are a few often-neglected early spring tasks that our Community Standards staff spot each year: • Complete any fall yard clean-up you didn't finish last year to prevent patches of grass from dying.

• Pick up pet waste. It's not only unsightly and smelly — pet waste is also a major source of bacteria in streams.

• Check gutters, exterior walls and windows for signs of wood rot and other damage. If your home needs repair work, get bids early, as many contractors book fast in the warmer months.

• Check your driveway, walkway and sidewalk conditions to ensure there are no trip hazards like cracks or vegetation. People will be out walking soon.

DAWN REDWOOD H: 40–50' | W: 15–25' This fast-growing tree has a pyramidal shape, exfoliating bark and fine leaf texture.

It's best used as an ornamental or street tree. Plant in moist soil.

KENTUCKY COFFEETREE H: 50–60' | W: 40–50' This tree is known for winter interest, with large, bean-like pods. It can be planted in any soil condition, wet or dry, but must receive full sun. Plant away from power lines, structures, sidewalks and sewers.

SWAMP WHITE OAK SHUMARD OAK H: 60–70' | W: 40–50' This is a great shade tree that tolerates drought, pollution and compacted soil.

It displays vibrant redorange fall colors and produces acorns.

H: 60–70' | W: 30–40' This oak prefers sun and is good for acidic, moist, well-drained and wet soils. It is drought tolerant once established. Fall colors are yellow, bronze and red-purple. It produces acorns for wildlife.

REDBUD H: 20–30' | W: 25–35' This very adaptable tree produces pinkpurple flowers on bare branches in the spring, followed by heartshaped leaves. Plant in a more protected area; a good understory tree.

SUGAR MAPLE H: 50–60' | W: 50–60' This slow-growing tree is worth the wait!

Known as the perfect shade tree, it has gorgeous fall color, is heat tolerant and is leaf tatter resistant.

FLOWERING DOGWOOD H: 12–15' | W: 20–30' Grown mainly for spring flowers, this tree can also have spectacular fall color. The horizontal branches give it a layered look. Use only in partial shade or as an understory tree.

BOX ELDER H: 35–60' | W: 30–60' This drought-resistant native is an easy-togrow, very adaptable maple. It helps to shelter wildlife and stabilize stream banks.

PAW PAW H: 20–30' | W: 15–25' This tropical-looking tree has thick, drooping leaves and reddish-brown flowers.

Its edible yellow fruits taste like a banana.

Plant in moist, rich soil in either sun or shade.

BALD CYPRESS H: 50–70' | W: 60–80' This stately tree likes water and will grow knobby "knees" at the base of its trunk in wet situations; it will tolerate dry locations, too. Its ferny leaves fall in autumn.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE PLANTING YOUR TREE Location: Where will the tree be planted? What is the sun/shade situation? Is the area wet or dry? Is the area windy or sheltered? What type of soil will the tree be planted in?

Expectation: Do you want a tree that blooms? A shade tree? A tree with great fall color? What shape do you want?

Future care: What are the watering and pruning requirements? Are you going to maintain the tree? Will a lawn care company care for the tree?

QUICK GUIDE TO OPEN BURNING Whether you're looking to burn a pile of winter storm debris or clear a field for fresh spring growth, you'll need a permit from the Lenexa Fire Department to help make sure you're protecting the safety of people and property.

Some of our open burning regulations recently changed. We've highlighted the basics for three common types of burning permits below.

The types of burn permits listed are for burning natural vegetation like branches and brush. No refuse (household trash) or construction lumber materials are allowed to be burned.

USE THIS PERMIT TO: Burn brush, branches, limbs and natural yard waste at home.

Residential (one- and two- family dwellings) burning permits authorize the open burning of land clearance materials from the permitted property.

USE THIS PERMIT TO: Burn off plants like prairie grasses and wildflowers to promote fresh growth. A prescribed burning permit authorizes controlled open burning for the purpose of vegetation management of stands of prairie grasses and stormwater-related green infrastructure practices.

SIZE/DISTANCE RULES: The burn pile may not exceed 8 feet in diameter and 6 feet in height and must be located at least 50 feet from structures or combustible materials GET A PERMIT: Applicants must obtain a permit from the Lenexa Fire Department station closest to their house. Later this year, residential burn permits will be available online. Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the permit requirements and pay a $25 fee before the permit is issued.

OTHER BURN PERMITS Burn permits are also required for bonfires, ceremonial fires and commercial burning. Go to Lenexa.com/Fire to learn more.

AGRICULTURAL BURNING USE THIS PERMIT TO: Burn off farm fields to prepare for the growing season. An agricultural burning permit authorizes the open burning of vegetation such as grass, woody species, crop residue and other dry plant growth for agricultural purposes.

DISTANCE RULES: Prescribed burning may not be conducted within 25 feet of any structure.

(Facing north toward Old Town) In place of the current Senior Center, the plan proposes creating a public plaza at the southeast corner of Walnut Street and Pflumm Road. It would feature flexible lawn space, pickleball courts connected with the Community Center, a dedicated area for drop-offs or food trucks and outdoor seating.

(Facing north over Scouting Park at 94th Street and Haskins Street) Ideas for Scouting Park improvements along 94th Street and Haskins Avenue include a relocated community garden, trellises and shelters for shade, more landscaping, sidewalks and public art.

PLAN FOR MAJOR UPGRADES TO OLD TOWN COMMUNITY AND SENIOR CENTERS PRESENTED In January, the Lenexa City Council reviewed preliminary plans from a study that, once fully realized, would transform the block of Old Town occupied by the Community Center, Senior Center and Scouting Park.

The resulting design concepts create more spaces both inside and outside that can be used by people of all ages.

At full buildout, the plan would serve residents for 20–25 years. Proposed changes include:

Renovating the nearly 40-year-old Community Center could be an effective opportunity to reinvest in Old Town, improve accessibility and operations, and expand recreation programming — especially for a growing senior population.

Revamping the Community Center/Senior Center site was identified as a top priority in the Parks Master Plan of 2012. The New Look at Old Town Study from 2015 recommended combining the two buildings and creating an outdoor gathering space for Old Town.

• Renovating the Community Center lobby, kitchen and restrooms, adding a flexible program room, and addressing accessibility issues.

Using federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, the city hired SFS Architecture last fall to conduct a feasibility study to rehabilitate the Community Center/ Senior Center site. The consultants looked at how the current spaces are used, evaluated operational and accessibility challenges, and explored how to best address consolidation concerns while meeting community recreation needs.

• Moving the Senior Center into space on the east side of the Community Center, with expanded capacity, updated amenities, a new entry, and parking and accessibility improvements.

• Replacing the existing Senior Center building with a public plaza that features active green spaces and a food truck plaza.

• Reconfigured parking lot.

• Improvements to Scouting Park such as new shelters, trellises, landscaping and public art.

It seats more people, could be partitioned for different activities, and would have adjoining restrooms, better audiovisual technology and a more efficient kitchen.

New RideKC microtransit available in eastern Lenexa Looking for an easy way to get around in eastern Lenexa? RideKC is now offering an on-demand service to connect you to work, school, shopping and more through its six-month microtransit pilot program.

The microtransit program will allow you to use an app on your phone to request a ride anywhere in the service boundaries — Shawnee Mission Parkway to the north, Metcalf Avenue to the east, 119th Street to the south and Renner Boulevard to the west — Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. This includes Johnson County Community College. Each ride costs $1.50.

To book a ride, either use the microtransit app or call 816.512.5510. Be sure to allow ample time to arrive at your destination. This is a ridesharing program, so there may be others in your vehicle using the service.

The study recommendations break the project into three phases. Community Center improvements would happen first, followed by a consolidation with the Senior Center, and then the surrounding parking and green space alterations. The estimated cost to construct all phases at the same time is around $5.2 million.

This rehabilitation plan is on the city’s wish list to be considered as part of the Capital Improvement Program budget as early as 2020.

If the project secures funding, the preliminary concepts will be refined into detailed final designs. In the meantime, the city intends to use CDBG funds to make minor facility accessibility improvements this year.

Using the microtransit app is simple: 1. Go to your app store and search “microtransit” in your app store to download the app.

2. Create a free account with the app (Your information will not be shared, but you will need to include your mobile phone number if you would like to receive text message notifications).

3. Confirm your pick-up location and select your drop-off location. These must be within the service's region parameters shown on the map.

Change your pick-up time by tapping “ASAP” and selecting a new time and date to schedule your ride.

4. Select the number of passengers with you, and if you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Tap "Request Ride" when ready.

REGISTERING FOR CLASSES & PROGRAMS: To sign up for programs, go to Lenexa.com/GetActive. New users will need to create a household account listing each household member.

All participants need to sign a release from liability form before participating in any program. Children need to have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to attending a class.

CANCELLATION POLICIES: All program cancellations will be determined two business days before the class is scheduled to begin. All registrations are required before the 48-hour deadline.

You'll be notified if a program has been canceled or changed.

If you need to cancel, call at least five business days before the program begins. Refunds only made if cancellation does not affect minimum participant number. There will be a $5 processing fee. Loved Tot Soccer? This co-ed league is designed just like it: a 5 v. 5 recreational league with no goalkeeper. Teams will consist of seven or eight players and are led be parent volunteer coaches. Adult Swim Lessons (Ages 16+) Youth Ultimate Frisbee League (Ages 8–18)

Sign up to play this fast-action, non-contact field sport that combines elements of soccer, basketball and football!

High school teams that want to play together can do so and will be assigned a coach to help as needed. The first week will be a scrimmage with coaches evaluating players, followed by the draft. Games will last 75 minutes.

Before most games, an open skills session will be held for anyone wanting to attend. Each participant will receive a regulation disc and jersey. Cleats are recommended. All other equipment will be provided. Any returning player that recruits a new player to the league will receive a $10 reimbursement for the league fee. Leagues will be divided into ages 8–11, 12–15 and 16–18. #301117 W
