Stacy Knipp appointed to serve Ward 2 on Lenexa City Council Stacy Knipp was recently sworn in as the newest member of the Lenexa City Council, serving Ward 2. She is filling the seat of longtime council member Diane Linver, who stepped down from her position at the end of 2016 after serving on the council for 28 years.

Under Lenexa City Code, the mayor nominates a candidate to fill the unexpired term of a vacant seat. The mayor received eight quality applications for the position and interviewed each candidate before making his recommendation. The council approved the mayor’s recommendation on Feb. 21. Knipp’s seat is one of four which will be voted on during the November election.

Knipp has a bachelor’s degree in political science from West Virginia University. She served as an operations officer in the United States Air Force. Before she was appointed to the council, she served on Lenexa’s Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and was active with the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce. Stacy was also a member of the 2016 Lenexa Citizens’ Fire Academy class.

HOA OUTREACH MEETING SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 12 If you are a member of your homeowners association (HOA) board, you’re invited to our spring HOA outreach meeting on April 12 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the City Council chambers at Lenexa City Hall and will cover the following topics: useful features on the city’s new website, the

2017 Pavement Management Program and updates and membership information for the new Lenexa Rec Center.

LENEXA CIVIC CENTER PROJECT UPDATE We are just a few months away from opening the new City Hall and Lenexa Rec Center. Work at the site continues to progress as we approach the ribbon cutting on July 31. The most significant changes you will see over that time are the stone being placed at the outdoor stage at the Commons between the buildings and the landscaping being installed. Most of the work on both buildings is now taking place inside, where paint, carpet and other finishes are being completed.

At the Rec Center, the flooring for the gyms has been laid and crews are hard at work putting the finishing touches on the pool deck. The pools are scheduled to be filled in late April — a sign the building is almost ready to open. Park University named educational partner at new City Hall If you have been following recent City Council meetings, you may have noticed that a lease agreement was approved for the new City Hall, formally establishing Park University as the higher education partner for the project.

Park will be located on the third floor of City Hall and will provide both face-to-face and online classes. The University is very committed to the project and the partnership — so excited, in fact, that it will staff a temporary information and enrollment facility on the southeast corner of westbound 87th Street Parkway and Elmridge Street in the coming weeks. So, if you are thinking about pursuing a degree, we encourage you to visit Park at its temporary location or at Park.edu before it officially moves in.

Lenexa Lazers Swim & Dive Team Want your child to have fun while learning a lifelong skill in a team atmosphere? The Lenexa Lazers Swim & Dive Team is the perfect place to do that.

Youth ages 7 to 18 are welcome to participate on either the pre-competitive swim team, competitive swim team or competitive dive team. The teams practice mornings during the week and have meets throughout the summer.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING When you are at the pools, you will see lifeguards training to maintain “rescue readiness.”

They will practice skills like CPR, performing training drills and entering the water. To help our staff in their training, here are a few things you can do: • Be aware that devices such as mannequins and silhouette outlines will be used.

• If you hear a whistle, look at the closest lifeguard for instructions.

• Our lifeguards train hard and train often. Thank them for their service!

TIPS TO REMEMBER FOR WATER SAFETY Lifeguards assist in the event of an emergency, but adults need to remain with small children and non-swimmers at all times. U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejackets are permitted to be used with the help of an adult and are available to borrow at the pool front desk.

Also, here are tips for how you can help us keep water safe:

LANYARDS, GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE Keep track of your pool key tag with an “I Like Lenexa” lanyard, which can be purchased at the Lenexa Community Center. You can also purchase reloadable gift cards that can be used as gifts or at the pools for daily admission and concession stand items.

• Don’t swim if you have had diarrhea in the last two weeks.

• Don’t swallow pool water.

• Bathe before swimming.

• Take frequent bathroom breaks, check diapers often and change them in the restroom.

Lenexa Freedom Run The 39th annual Lenexa Freedom Run, 5K and 10K race for all levels of runners begins at 7 a.m. on July 4 in Old Town. Early bird registration is $20 through May 31. Mayor touts city successes at 2017 State of the City address

JUNE 1 IS ELECTION FILING DEADLINE Four positions on the Lenexa City Council are up for election this year. If you are interested in filing for election, you must do so by noon on June 1, 2017.

The timeline for elections is changed this year due to recent laws passed by the Kansas Legislature (K.S.A 25-21a01(f)).

Mayor Michael Boehm gave his annual State of the City speech on Feb. 15, outlining the major accomplishments Lenexa has achieved over the last year. He touted the city’s strong financial position and consistent drive to find ways to save money, as well as the increasingly popular events and festivals Lenexa hosts each year.

On the horizon, we continue to grow and are nearing completion of the new Lenexa Rec Center and Lenexa City Hall at City Center. Those facilities are scheduled to open July 31 of this year.

Positions up for election are currently held by council members Joe Karlin (Ward 1), Stacy Knipp (Ward 2), Lou Serrone (Ward 3) and Mandy Stuke (Ward 4). If three or more people file for election for one position, a primary election will be held Aug. 1. The general election will be held Nov. 7.

Runoff can pick up pollutants such as fertilizers and pet waste, transporting them into the streamway system.

We plan to treat approximately 110 lane miles of residential streets with an ultrathin bonded asphalt surface to protect and extend their life. As part of that work, we’re also fixing deteriorated curbs and gutters, replacing some sidewalk sections and installing accessible curb ramps.

Many neighborhoods east of Renner Boulevard will see improvements over the coming months. And asphalt trails will be replaced by concrete at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, Na-Nex-Se Park and Tamarisk Park.

Lenexa’s citizen surveys regularly show that maintaining city streets is your top priority. The 3/8-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2008 helps fund extra road maintenance. This year, the city will invest approximately $7.5 million in road maintenance though its Pavement Management Program — a 63 percent increase over both 2015 and 2016. The improvements will impact an estimated 5,667 households and more than a quarter of residents in the city in one year!

Just like giving a car a regular tune-up to keep it in good running order, the city does preventative maintenance to extend the life of its streets, sidewalks and trails. Reconstructing roadways is expensive and disruptive, so we try to preserve them as long as possible to make the most of our resources.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HEART OF LENEXA CONTEST WINNERS Staff removed the Na-Nex-Se statue from City Hall recently. It will be cleaned and reinstalled at the new City Hall building at 87th Street Parkway and Penrose Lane.

You may notice that the bronze statue of Lenexa’s namesake, NeNex-Se, is missing from the pedestal in front of City Hall.

Not to worry — the piece of art is undergoing a deep cleaning before making its way to a new home at Lenexa City Center. The statue will be placed in a prominent position on the civic campus near one of the main entrances to the new City Hall.

The statue, created by artist Kwan Wu, was dedicated in 2004 in honor of former Mayor Joan Bowman. Additional art will be installed on the civic campus in the coming years. A Public Arts Committee has identified key locations for new pieces of art and is creating a public art master plan for the area.

EXTERIOR GRANT PROGRAM HELPS WITH HOME REPAIRS If you live in the Neighborhood Revitalization District and are planning home improvements, consider applying for an exterior grant reimbursement. Eligible improvements include façade restoration, window and door repair or replacement, masonry, awnings, exterior lighting, exterior painting, new roofs and landscaping. Applications are on a first-come, first-served basis until the current year’s funding is exhausted. We will partially reimburse you for architectural, construction and material costs for your improvements or new construction. You must invest at least $3,000 and apply within 90 days of completing your project.

Community Orchestra coming soon Community Orchestra looking for volunteer musicians Do you play a musical instrument? The Lenexa Arts Council is organizing a new Community Orchestra to provide volunteer musicians an opportunity to get together to perform and for community members to enjoy the free concerts. We welcome all musicians ranging from experienced high school students to adults who play regularly, and even those who haven’t performed in a while. Our philosophy is to be inclusive with a no-audition policy.

Led by Conductor Richard Ryan, the orchestra will rehearse four times and hold a dress rehearsal prior to each concert. Concert dates are: July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 19. We also have other volunteer positions that support the orchestra. Learn more at Lenexa.com/TownTalk.

Meet the Conductor: Richard Ryan Richard Ryan is a bassist, teacher and conductor. He has been a member of the Kansas City Symphony since 2011 and a faculty member at the University of Kansas since 2013. He has performed with orchestras around the country, including the Chicago, Indianapolis and National Symphonies. As a conductor, he has worked with the Louisville Youth Orchestra, Kling Chamber Orchestra of Louisville and the KU Symphony.

Richard hails from Phoenix, Arizona, and attended Indiana University, where he studied double bass performance with Bruce Bransby. He won his first full-time position as Assistant Principal Bass with the Louisville Orchestra at the age of 20. He now lives in Kansas City with his wife, Angella.

ADA, REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION POLICIES All participants need to sign a release from liability form before registering and participating in any Lenexa Parks and Recreation program.

Children need to have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to attending a class.

All program cancellations will be determined 48 hours (two business days) before the class is scheduled to begin. In order to prevent cancellations, all registrations are required before the 48-hour deadline.

You will be notified if a program is cancelled or changed. Upon request, a confirmation receipt can be mailed for any program.
