MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF In 2018, the Police Department marked 150 years of serving the Lee’s Summit community. Our rich history began in 1868, when J.J. Craft became the first marshal of the Town of Lee’s Summit. With a population of 100, Marshal Craft served a growing town full of promise. While much has changed since 1868, Lee’s Summit remains a growing town and it is most certainly full of promise. Like Marshal Craft, the Lee’s Summit Police Department of today is committed to safeguarding the community and reducing the incidence of crime. We are thankful to those who came before us and will continue to honor their legacy into the future.

During 2018, we made significant progress towards implementing a radio system upgrade authorized by a voterapproved no-tax-increase general obligation bond. Motorola was selected to design and buildout the system.

The radio system was staged for testing at Motorola’s facility in Illinois and the equipment is partially installed in Lee’s Summit. Further development will continue with projected completion at the end of 2019. The upgraded radio system will significantly enhance the department’s ability to respond to large-scale emergencies and work with our regional public safety partners.

System buildout is underway for a new records management system. An internal task force evaluated solutions and selected Zuercher Technologies to replace the records, mobile data and computer-aided dispatching systems. The new fully integrated system will provide a user-friendly interface, data that is easier to evaluate and a smooth transition to new federal reporting requirements. The anticipated completion date is late 2019.

Lee’s Summit continues to see rapid growth in both residential housing and commercial sectors. The department conducted a thorough evaluation of data to anticipate staffing and resource needs in 2018. We developed tools to look at parameters and indicators to determine when additional resources are necessary to meet growing demands. This project will continue into 2019 and will focus on anticipated future growth patterns for the City.

We also initiated a facility space study to explore current and future facility needs. Our goal is to be prepared when it comes to public safety in Lee’s Summit.

Being a police officer is not easy. Our officers enjoy what they do, but the challenges of a 24/7 career, where calls for service can be traumatic, is difficult. The Police Department works diligently to provide support for our employees with a peer support program that provides guidance and aid when needed. Our volunteer police chaplains selflessly give back every day to help our officers, staff and community. This year, we added a “family day” to give the loved ones of our employees the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the Police Department.

During 2018, we continued our tradition of recognizing excellent service at our annual awards ceremony.

Detective Michael Reese was named Officer of the Year for his outstanding service to the department and Administrative Assistant Martha Zamarippa was honored as Civilian of the Year.

Looking towards the future, we see significant improvements and changes for both the City of Lee’s Summit and the Police Department. We appreciate our role as members of this great community and look forward to continuing our relationships with its citizens.
