STAYconnected

THE PERFECTweekend getaway

Rich in history and built on community, La Porte is a small Texas town where the Houston Ship Channel meets Galveston Bay. Established in 1892, many of the families who settled here still call La Porte home and it's no surprise why.

LaPorte

A roaring tourist stop in the 40s, La Porte is now a relaxing escape from the reality of the big city. Just 35 minutes from downtown Houston, La Porte offers a unique visitor experience that leaves you feeling like a local. From bay views to boutique shopping to history lessons that helped shape our nation, we have much to explore at an easy pace. The industry that surrounds us is invaluable to our nation's continued success. Our residents and the work that they do tells our story of pride in economic stability, a community that cares for each other and celebrates together, and so much more.

We are truly a hidden gem on Galveston Bay, and quite frankly we like it that way.

SAN JACINTO MONUMENT

The San Jacinto Museum of History, within the base of the San Jacinto Monument, holds one of the largest collections of Texas art, artifacts, and history.

HISTORIC MAIN STREET

Main Street in La Porte managed to make a comeback from The Great Storm of 1915 and a fire that destroyed Downtown La Porte that same year and continues to thrive. Main Street is home to many boutiques and antique shops, local eateries, and a food truck park, everything you need for a refreshing day out with that rare and authentic small-town feeling.

SYLVAN BEACH DEPOT MUSEUM

604 Park Street | (281) 471-0493

La Porte was a major tourist destination in the early 20th century, known in many circles as the “Coney Island of the South” and a regular stop on the Moonlight Express train from Houston. The depot is now the Old Sylvan Beach Depot Museum, managed by The Heritage Society. Open to the public at no charge from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends, the Museum is staffed by Society members who are a fantastic resource for all things historical.

HISTORIC COLORED SCHOOL

401 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. | (281) 470-7275

The Schoolhouse is a tangible reminder of the early education of African American students in the La Porte area prior to and during school integration. The original building, first used in the early 1900s, has been renovated preserving as much of the original material as possible, including windows and the wooden structure. The museum is open on weekends from 11 am-4 pm and admission is free.

BAY FOREST GOLF COURSE

201 Bay Forest Dr | (281) 471-4653

Winding through a natural bayside setting of stately trees and bayou-fed waterways, La Porte Bay Forest Golf Course has earned the prestigious distinction of being named one of the top 20 municipal golf courses in Texas. Bay Forest offers amenities for both the casual and championship player, making it a true golf test at an affordable price.

LITTLE CEDAR BAYOU WAVE POOL
