Are you looking for a way to express your creativity and get outdoors? Join the painted rock movement! What is it? A rock is painted with a picture or inspirational message and placed outdoors for others to find and move to a new location or replace with their own creation! This painted rock project promotes creativity and physical activity in nature. The goal is to get the La Porte community involved in creating their own rocks and placing them in our parks for the community to find! When you discover or hide a rock, post your pictures using the #LaPorteRocks hashtag and stay involved through our La Porte Rocks Facebook Page. When creating your own rocks, please write "#LaPorteRocks" on the back of your artwork. We encourage you to take rocks to other towns, states or countries to hide and share for others to find and enjoy! General Guidelines • If you find a painted rock that you wish to keep, simply replace it with your own creation! • Coat rocks with a sealer for longevity. • Do not glue accessories on the rocks. These decorations can fall off and become litter and a danger to wildlife. • Be sensitive to the natural environment. Stay on trails and respect the natural surroundings. • Do not hide rocks indoors or on private property without permission. • Please keep your artwork appropriate for all ages. Share a picture of your findings on social media with the hashtag #laporterocks

MONARCH BUTTERFLY WAYSTATION Did you know? The Monarch Butterfly was name the Texas state insect in 1995 by the state legislature.  The Monarch butterfly is a pollinator that plays a vital role in the food chain for humans and other animals.  Without pollinators, we'd have limited supply of fresh produce, which we rely on daily.  Monarch butterflies are migratory creatures.  Millions of monarch butterflies pass through Texas every fall to overwintering areas in Mexico and venture through Texas the following spring as they journey to northern United States for the summer.  Many people are enamored by the monarch butterfly migration cycle but the species is dwindling due to development and widespread use of herbicides in croplands, pastures and roadsides.  Subdivisions, factories, shopping centers, etc. consume 6,000 acres of natural monarch and wildlife habitat per day in the U.S.  However, many cities across the nation are taking notice, including the City of La Porte, and are making a positive impact by raising awareness of the declining population, teaching youth about monarch conservation and creating monarch butterfly habitats in the community.  The La Porte Parks and Recreation Department has instituted its first nationally recognized certified Monarch Waystation.  WHERE: Brookglen Community Center                 3324 Sommerton, La Porte, TX 77571 For more information contact (281) 470-9891 or email recreation@laportetx.gov

TRAILS. BY THE BAY.

HIKE & BIKE TRAIL The City of La Porte provides the perfect opportunity for adventures with more than thirteen miles of trails for walking, cycling, running, hiking, or simply relaxing. The main artery of the trail system winds its way parallel to Fairmont Parkway from Pasadena all the way to the bay. The paved path is ideal for cyclist looking for a long weekend ride. At the eastern end of the trail is Little Cedar Bayou Park, where runners can take a rest beneath the shady trees, while watching their furry little training partner play at the dog park. From the Little Cedar Bayou Dog Park, the trail splits into two separate personalities: one, continue along the paved well-manicured path, or two, step off-road  for a little rugged retreat. Option two leads hikers down a dirt trail away from the park as it twist beside the bayou toward the open bay. The densely wooded surroundings swallow up the sounds of the city, and with every step farther down the trail, stress and deadlines dissolve into distant memories. The trail ends with two unique bird-watching platforms (the first is pictured to the left), where the sweeping views of the bay are just what the doctor ordered.
