PARKS AND RECREATION Start Smart Soccer

Start Smart Baseball

Start Smart Soccer is an introductory soccer program for children 3-5 years old. The program is aimed to help kids get ready for team sports and focuses on the fundamentals of soccer. Parent/guardian participation is required during each class. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings for 6 weeks beginning March 4. Registration opens January 13, and the deadline to register is March 1.

An introductory baseball program for children 3-5 years old. The program prepares children for organized tee-ball, baseball and softball by teaching throwing, catching, batting, running and agility. Parent/guardian participation is required during each class. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings for 6 weeks beginning April 15. Registration opens March 2, and the deadline to register is April 12.

Youth NFL Flag Football League – NEW!

Brand new spring flag football league for Grades K–8. This recreational league will allow football lovers of all skill levels to play the game in a safe, team-friendly environment while having tons of fun! Players/teams will receive official NFL Flag reversible jerseys and flag belts while representing the NFL team chosen by the volunteer head coach. Practices will be held weekly with games on Saturdays at Fairmont Park on Farrington. Some grade levels will be combined. Volunteer coaches are needed! Games are played every Saturday for 8 weeks beginning March 28. Practices begin after Spring Break. Early Registration runs January 6 – February 16, with a late registration deadline of March 1.

Adult Coed Kickball League – NEW! The kickball craze is coming to La Porte! Get your family, friends and neighbors together to form a team for what’s sure to be a blast and take you back to the glory days of elementary school P.E. class! League play will be on Wednesday and possibly Tuesday nights and all teams must be coed. Full team registration is preferred but individual free agents may register initially for free with the intent of being placed on a team by the Parks & Recreation Department. Free agents are NOT guaranteed placement on a team but the department will do its best to accommodate everyone wanting to play, and once placed, free agents will be expected to pay his/her portion of the team fee to the team captain prior to being placed on the game schedule. The season will conclude with single-elimination playoffs and championship shirts will be given to the league winners. Season begins May 5/6, and runs through July 1. Registration is open March 2 – April 22, 2020. Entry fee of $200 per team.

Adult Coed Volleyball League – NEW! Calling all volleyball enthusiasts! Come get your game on at the Recreation & Fitness Center this spring.

League play will be on Monday nights and all teams must be coed (6 v 6). Full team registration is preferred but individual free agents may register initially for free with the intent of being placed on a team by the Parks & Recreation Department. Free agents are NOT guaranteed placement on a team but the department will do its best to accommodate everyone wanting to play, and once placed, free agents will be expected to pay his/ her portion of the team fee to the team captain prior to being placed on the game schedule. The season will conclude with single-elimination playoffs and championship shirts will be given to the league winners. Season begins March 2, and runs through April 27. Registration open January 6 – February 24, 2020. Entry fee of $175 per team.

Girls Youth Volleyball League This recreational league is designed for girls in Grades 4 –8 to increase physical activity, develop teamwork & interpersonal skills, learn the game of volleyball, practice & improve volleyball skills, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Practices will be held once per week with at least one match each Saturday (includes end of season tournament). Some grade levels will be combined. Player jerseys are provided. Volunteer coaches are needed!

Spring Break Camp

Texas Outdoor Family Campouts Camping at a state park can be intimidating for someone who’s never camped before. The Texas Outdoor Family Program is a partnership with Texas State Parks that helps remove those barriers. This program is a one-night camping event to introduce families to camping, nature, and your Texas State Parks. The activities this program offers will enable you and your family to comfortably and safely enjoy your Texas State Parks and provide skills for a lifetime of rewarding outdoor experiences. We will provide you with a tent, cots and sleeping pads, a stove, pans, fuel, a lantern, and more! Families (up to 6 people) will need to provide their own food, personal items, and bedding. We have two sessions to choose from this spring: Huntsville State Park on April 4-5, 2020, and Stephen F. Austin State Park on April 25-26, 2020. Families can only register for one campout per season. Registration opens February 3, 2020, and the deadline to register is March 18, 2020.

School is out for Spring Break and we have fun & engaging activities for your kids to stay active. We have games, arts & crafts, sports and field trips planned that will pack the week full of new friends and fun adventures. Camp fills up quickly so register early! Campers must bring a sack lunch, refillable water bottle, and 2 snacks each day. Registration opens January 6, 2020, and the deadline to register is February 28, 2020.

Geocaching 101 Workshop Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. This workshop is designed teach you the basics of geocaching using your smartphone. It will consist of an indoor presentation and an outdoor walk to discover caches. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring your smartphone! The workshop will be held Thursday, March 26, at the Recreation and Fitness Center (Senior Center) from 5:30-7:00 PM. All ages are welcome; 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent. Registration opens January 6, and the deadline to register is March 20, 2020.

The La Porte Historical Colored School is now open! Bring your kids on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am-4pm, for a short, 1015 min lesson on the wonderful history of the school. CITY HAPPENINGS It’s Election Season!

Filing for the City of La Porte May 2 General Election will be January 15 through February 14 in the City Secretary’s office from 8am-5pm.

Information and forms are available at LaPorteTX.gov/CandidatePacket.

Voters who would like to receive ballots by mail must reapply annually. The state of Texas provides that certain voters may apply to vote by mail. There are Secretary of State forms to apply for a ballot by mail at City Hall, at https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/forms/5-15f.pdf LaPorteTX.gov/BallotByMail, or upon request by mail to the City Secretary, 604 West Fairmont Parkway, La Porte, TX 77571; by fax to 281-842-3701; or via email to CSOStaff@LaPorteTX.gov.

R.O.C.K. Juvenile Community Service Program La Porte Municipal Court is pleased to offer R.O.C.K. (Responsibility, Opportunity, Consequences, Knowledge), an innovative community service alternative for juveniles with Class C Misdemeanor offenses. R.O.C.K. 2020 will kick off with one of the Court’s favorite speakers, Harris County gang specialist James Odom, who serves as the Gang Resource Coordinator for the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department and has been working with some of Houston’s most active street gangs since 1996. The February program will feature emotional intelligence expert, Dr. Windell Gill. In March, participants will get the feel for impaired driving and its risks with the City’s SIDNE simulation cars.
