STORYTIME IN THE PARK Storytime in the Park is a terrific way to get children outside and more connected to nature. Join us in your neighborhood park where we explore nature with a book and fun outdoor activities! All children must be accompanied by a parent or child care provider who will participate in the program. As a Voyager, campers will get the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of weekly games, crafts, sports, swimming, special events, and field trips, all while making lasting memories with their new mates! Private swim lessons offer one on one instruction from out most experienced certified instructors. It also offers the most flexibility by allowing you to choose the time that best fits your schedule. SPORTS. BY THE BAY. ADULT COED KICKBALL NEW LEAGUE The kickball craze is coming to La Porte! Get your family, friends and neighbors together to form a team for what’s sure to be a blast and take you back to the glory days of elementary school P.E. class! League play will be on Wednesday, and possibly Tuesday nights, and all teams must be coed. Full team registration is preferred but individual free agents may register with the intent of being placed on a team by the Parks & Recreation Department. Free agents are NOT guaranteed placement on a team but the department will do its best to accommodate everyone wanting to play. The season will conclude with single-elimination playoffs and championship shirts will be given to the league winners. TAAF YOUTH TRACK & FIELD Come join us this summer as we compete at local, regional, and state level track and field events. This program is all about having fun and competing against other quality track teams in the region. Coaching will be provided as well as track jerseys! Meets will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the area. Morning practice times at La Porte High School will vary with each age group and will be provided in the parent handbook upon registration. SPORTS. BY THE BAY. START SMART BASEBALL Start Smart Baseball is an introductory baseball program for children 3-5 years old. The 6-week program prepares children for organized tee-ball, baseball and softball by teaching throwing, catching, batting, running, and agility. The program builds confidence and self-esteem that gives children a fun and positive early experience in sports. It will help prepare kids for future athletic participation and allows for quality time between parents and children. Parent/Guardian participation is required during each class. PICKUP VOLLEYBALL , PICKLEBALL AND RACQUETBALL Reserve a court for pickup volleyball, pickleball, and racquetball. Nets and equipment will be available with a reservation and membership/guest pass. START SMART BASKETBALL Start Smart Basketball is an introductory basketball program for children 3-5 years old. The 6-week program teaches children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children basic skills in dribbling/ball-handling, passing/catching, shooting, and running/agility in an encouraging environment. LA PORTE BAY AREA HERITAGE SOCIETY DEPOT MUSEUM Saturdays and Sundays | 11:00AM – 4:00PM The La Porte Bay Area Heritage Society Depot Museum, Caboose, and La Porte's first library are located in Heritage Park, across the street from Harris County's Sylvan Beach Park. Admission is free. In 1978, the Old La Porte Depot was relocated back to its original location and restored to serve as a museum for the City of La Porte, Texas and surrounding areas. In 2017, the Heritage Exhibit Hall was built for future workshops and exhibits.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY WAYSTATION The Monarch Butterfly is a pollinator that plays a vital role in the food chain for humans and other animals. Without pollinators, we'd have limited supply of fresh produce, which we rely on daily. Monarch Butterflies are migratory creatures. Millions of Monarch Butterflies pass through Texas every fall to overwintering areas in Mexico and venture through Texas the following spring as they journey to the northern United States for the summer. The species is dwindling due to development and widespread use of herbicides in croplands, pastures and roadsides. Many cities across the nation are taking notice, including the City of La Porte. The La Porte Parks and Recreation Department has instituted its first nationally recognized certified Monarch Waystation. LA PORTE HISTORICAL COLORED SCHOOL Saturdays and Sundays | 10:00AM – 4:00PM The La Porte Historical Colored School is now open! Bring your kids on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10AM - 4PM, for a short 1015 minute lesson on the wonderful history of the school. Then take them across the street to play on the playground! This is a year round program offering day camps in the summer and after school/work programs throughout the year. We also offer an adult day program for independently functioning adults. The main objective of the S.P.O.R.T. (Special Populations Organized Recreation Therapy) program is to provide recreational activities, enhance fine and gross motor skills, and create lasting friendships in a safe and structured environment for those with mental or physical disabilities. TRAILS. BY THE BAY. HIKE & BIKE TRAIL The City of La Porte provides the perfect opportunity for adventures with more than thirteen miles of trails for walking, cycling, running, hiking, or simply relaxing. The main artery of the trail system winds its way parallel to Fairmont Parkway from Pasadena all the way to the bay. The paved path is ideal for cyclists looking for a long weekend ride. At the eastern end of the trail is Little Cedar Bayou Park, where runners can take a rest beneath the shady trees, while watching their furry little training partner play at the dog park. From the Little Cedar Bayou Dog Park, the trail splits into two separate personalities: one, continue along the paved well-manicured path, or two, step off-road for a little rugged retreat. Option two leads hikers down a dirt trail away from the park as it twists beside the bayou toward the open bay. The densely wooded surroundings swallow up the sounds of the city, and with every step further down the trail, stress and deadlines dissolve into distant memories. The trail ends with two unique bird-watching platforms where the sweeping views of the bay are just what the doctor ordered.
