CITY HAPPENINGS THE CITY OF LA PORTE HAS A NEW APP! Stay informed and easily connected to the City of La Porte and Life By the Bay. With the La Porte By the Bay App, residents can easily stay up to date on City happenings. Our Website, Social Media, Parks & Recreation Programs, and Special Events are all just one click away! Residents can also submit a service request or pay a bill online. La Porte By the Bay connects our residents with the services and information they need to enjoy their community and stay connected with local government.

New Inclusive Playground!

The City of La Porte Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the addition of La Porte’s first fully inclusive playground at Northwest Park. This playground was designed to provide a safe place to allow for children of all abilities to play together and is appropriate for all children with or without disabilities. With this inclusive playground, we look to take away all barriers of exclusion and offer play for everyone. We expect this playground to be complete early August!

Congratulations to Joel Martin for being selected as Employee of the 1st Quarter!

Mr. Martin is a Treatment Plant Operator with Public Works, and was nominated by a teammate for his exemplary work and dedication during the winter storm in February.

Using the GIS Map: Tips and Tricks Join us at City Hall on Tuesday, August 3rd from 4:30pm to 5:30pm for an in-person presentation on the public GIS application (https://bit.ly/3j033Zp). This one mapping application is available for anyone to use. It holds a wealth of information and tools.

MUNICIPAL SEPARATE STORM SEWER SYSTEM The City of La Porte maintains a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System to transport stormwater. The City has also created a Storm Water Management Program to manage the quality of discharge from the system. This program includes best management practices and schedules for implementation to address six minimum control measures. For more information visit: http://LaPorteTx.gov/stormwater

ELECTION UPDATE At its April 26, 2021, regular meeting, the City Council adopted Ordinance 2021-3826, calling a special election for July 31, 2021.

Mandi Williams was the sole candidate. On June 14, 2021, the City Council accepted the certification of unopposed candidacy and adopted Ordinance 2021-3835 to cancel the July 31 election and declare Mandi Williams elected.

The Texas Election Code provides that unopposed candidates, even if declared elected, cannot be sworn in any earlier than if there was a regular election canvass, in this case, on any date from August 3-11, so, at this time, swearing in of CouncilpersonDistrict 1 Mandi Williams is expected for the August 9 regular Council meeting.

The City's next expected election will be the general election on May 7, 2022. To be eligible to vote in that election, voters must be registered 30 days prior to election day.

M SQUITOES THE BATTLE RAGES ON

The mosquito battle typically runs from April to October depending on the severity of the winter. After mild winters, the season may last all year, but fear not! The City of La Porte has a battle plan. City workers are engaged in a three-pronged attack: (1) night fogging, (2) larviciding of ditches, and (3) briquettes in ditches and detention ponds.

You too can join the fight! Each citizen can help in the control of mosquitoes by taking the following measures: get rid of standing water on your property where mosquitoes might breed; properly dispose of tires, cans, flower pots, etc.; keep gutters clean and free-flowing, as standing water in gutters can breed mosquitoes; keep swimming pools, spas, and fountains properly treated.

The City of La Porte only uses mosquito control chemicals that have been tested and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.

No chemicals are used that have proven to be damaging to either public health or the environment. The City of La Porte mosquito control operators are licensed Pest Control Applicators through the Texas Department of Agriculture and must annually update their training in order to retain their licenses.

LA PORTE EMS COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Car Seat Checks Free car seat checks are provided by our Child Safety Seat Technicians who have passed a certification course and each are very willing to help ensure your child safety seat is properly installed. Car seat checks are available by appointment only on the following dates at EMS Headquarters, 10428 Spencer Highway: July 1st, July 15th, July 29th, August 12th, August 26th, September 9th, September 23rd. Call 281-471-9244 for an appointment.

CPR Classes The City of La Porte EMS is offering the following CPR courses: 07/17- Heartsaver $23 08/21- Heartsaver $23 09/18- Healthcare Provider $27 Classes are located at La Porte EMS headquarters, 10428 Spencer Highway, and take place 8 AM-12 PM. Advanced registration required and cash payment is due the day of the class. Please call 281-471-9244 to register.

Heartsaver is a CPR class for anyone in the community who would like to be CPR certified and Health Care Provider is designed for those who work in the health care field.

Safe Riders City of La Porte EMS is offering free car seats to eligible participants.

Parents interested in participating in the program should contact Captain Rachel Gomez with the City of La Porte EMS at 281-470-0073.

Eligibility will be determined upon screening.

Classes will be held every other Tuesday at 10am at City of La Porte EMS Headquarters, 10428 Spencer Hwy, La Porte, TX 77571.

Registration is required - walk-ins are not permitted. The car seat will be installed after a 45 minute training class.

Childhood Immunizations City of La Porte EMS has teamed up with the Texas Department of State Health Services and their Texas Vaccine for Children Program (TVFC) to help immunize children in La Porte and surrounding areas free of charge.

The immunization clinics are currently held from 9 a.m. - noon on the 2nd Saturday of each month at the City of La Porte EMS Headquarters located at 10428 Spencer Highway. Vaccines are available for children 18 years of age and younger; no fee and no appointment required.

FALL PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL CLINICS $15 Per Player | Free For Coaches Registration Open July 1-September 7 Open to coaches & players that are registered for the City of La Porte fall youth volleyball league. FREE coaching clinic will be held on Saturday, September 11, from 10am–12pm at the LP Recreation & Fitness Center. Player clinic will be held same day & location from 1pm–3pm. Maximum 50 players.

NEW – VOLLEYBALL JUNIORS! 1st-3rd Grade Girls | $30 per player Registration Open July 1-August 31 Introductory practice program for 1st–3rd Grade. The 6-week program will run on Tuesdays from September 14–October 19, at the Recreation & Fitness Center from 5:30–6:30 PM. Registration includes instruction and t-shirt, with scrimmage games on the last day of the program. Maximum 24 players.

INDOOR PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS Registration opens August 1, for Ages 6 months to adult. One-on-one instruction from our experienced certified instructors. Each $60 session consists of four 45minute lessons offered weekday evenings between 6:30pm–7:30pm. All lessons held at the La Porte Recreation & Fitness Center. Fall sessions begin September 20.
