Participate in 2020

By: Mayor Andy Schor We have a lot to be proud of in Lansing. We have seen significant economic development, a focus on engaging our neighborhoods and supporting public art throughout the city. Our momentum of growth is extraordinary and we have no plans of slowing down. This year, we have a number of important community initiatives for all residents to be a part of.

United States 2020 Census First, we all have the opportunity to participate in the 2020 Census.

bring federal resources to our community. Lansing needs to be counted. Visit becountedlansing.com for more information on how you can fill out your census and how you can get involved with this important effort.

Lansing Park Millage In 2020, we also look forward to the Lansing Park Millage vote on Tuesday, August 4th. You may visit lansingmi.gov/parks for a fact sheet regarding the millage. This is a renewal of an existing millage so your property taxes will not increase.

You may ask: Why is the 2020 Census important? The Census impacts how much federal funding we receive for many of the services we provide. Approximately $1,800 per person per year will be allocated by the federal government over the next ten years. An accurate census ensures that Lansing receives the federal funding we need to continue to focus on what is most important - our people. It also determines our representation in Congress. Michigan continues to lose seats in Congress and every seat we lose means less ability to

Under current funding figures, Michigan would miss out on $1,800 of federal funds per year for every person not counted! Take the Census Online at my2020census.gov By Telephone at 1-800-354-7271 Send in your paper survey by mail.

The Lansing Park Millage is used for park and playground improvements, as well as, matching funds for county, state and federal grant programs. Over the past five years, more than $9 million in county, state and federal funds were leveraged to help improve our park and trail system. Funds from the Park Millage provided for the installation of Beacon Field I at Ferris Park and Beacon Field II at Beacon Park and operated one Kids’ Camp Site. We also installed new playgrounds at Ormond and Beck Parks and made repairs to numerous playgrounds throughout the city. ADA accessible canoe/kayak launches were installed at Moores, Tecumseh and Rotary Parks, a new pavilion was constructed at Moores Park and a mountain bike trail was created at Hunters Ridge Park. Major improvements were also made to the River Trail and Bridges, one of Lansing’s most valuable assets. Being the Mayor of Lansing is a tremendous honor and one I do not take for granted. Thank you for your support.

How To Participate •

Complete the census when received.

Vote on the upcoming park millage.

Talk to your friends and neighbors about the importance of voting and participating in the Census.

ARTICLES

the future of the Moores Park Pool

By: Veronica Gracia-Wing, Lansing Parks Board Chair & Co-Chair of Lansing’s Committee for a Sustainable Moores Park Pool.

Interested in the future of the Moores Park Pool? Join the Citizen Advisory Committee! At the end of November, the City hosted a listening session regarding the future of Moores Park and the pool. The feedback from the public was overwhelming in support for the historic pool. In response to this support, Mayor Schor has authorized an advisory committee to focus on the future vision of this park, paying particular attention to the historic pool.

Save the date for the Committee’s first fundraiser on Friday, April 17, 2020. We’ll celebrate in 1920s style to help raise money for the pool details in the Facebook group!

The People’s Pool Lansing’s Committee for a Sustainable Moores Park Pool represents a group of Citizens who are passionate about the welfare of the Moores Park Pool. It seeks to collaborate with city government, private business, appropriate non-profits and other interested individuals to ensure the pool’s future. The primary goal of the committee is to facilitate the preservation of the Wesley Bintz pool structure through the following four strategies: 1. Professionally assess and understand the maintenance needs of the pool and structure; 2. Create a financial structure to address current and legacy expenses; 3. Renovate and maintain the pool’s functionality; 4. Inform programming and use options to maximize pool usage.

The committee is in the organizational stages and welcomes all interested individuals and entities to join the effort. People can get more information and learn how to volunteer by visiting facebook.com/ groups/572503853538438/ or searching “The People’s Pool” on Facebook.

Moores Park Pool to be closed over 2020 season for assessment. In order to really understand what the maintenance needs of the pool are, the City must close the pool to general operation over the summer. We know. That’s not what you want to hear as we gear up for another hot Michigan summer. And we understand. But we hope you’ll understand how crucial this assessment period is for the future of the pool. We invite you to follow along on the Lansing Parks and Recreation social media channels to learn about events, other swimming opportunities and more fun ways to cool off this summer as we work to learn all we can about the pool.

Stay Updated! Moores Park Pool is closing over summer 2020, but stay tuned to Lansing Parks and Recreation social media channels for updates on exciting events and partnerships to make sure you stay cool this summer!

RECYCLING INFORMATION SIMPLE RECYCLING

Clothing and textiles are 100% recyclable, but most end up in landfills! The City of Lansing works with Simple Recycling, a company that collects usable clothing, shoes, textiles and household goods for reuse and recycling. Lansing residents can set these materials out at the curb on their normal City recycling day. Simple Recycling provides special bags and tags to residents that must be used to set out these items. To request bags, contact Simple Recycling at (866) 835-5068 or info@simplerecycling.com. Please remember that this is a separate collection from the Lansing green recycling carts. Please do not put clothing and textiles in recycling carts.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL

New Material recovery facility

By: Lori Welch, Environmental Specialist The City of Lansing is working to develop green policies and initiatives that emphasize the proper use of environmental resources with a focus on sustaining these resources for future generations. One of the ways that Lansing has demonstrated environmental leadership is by operating a robust recycling program and that program is about to get even better.

New Material Recovery Facility Recycling changes are on the horizon for the City of Lansing with the opening of a New Material Recovery Facility (MRF) this summer. A MRF is where recyclable materials go to be sorted into commodity types before they are shipped out to various markets to be made into new products. For over a decade, the materials collected for recycling in Lansing have been hauled to MRFs near Detroit and Ann Arbor, the closest options for processing singlestream materials. Hauling is costly and not the most environmentally sound process,

so keeping materials local will save fuel and reduce harmful emissions. The new facility, owned and operated by Emterra Environmental, will be located at an old, industrial site on South Pennsylvania Avenue in Lansing. There will be a significant investment made by Emterra to refurbish the property, which has been vacant for years. Once open, the center will create about a dozen new jobs. The City of East Lansing will also use this site and it is hoped that surrounding communities will too, making it more of a regional recycling hub.

There will be a very specific list of acceptable items with the intent of reducing contamination and confusion about what types of plastics can be included in the recycling stream. New educational materials will be distributed later this year that outlines how to properly recycle with the new changes that the MRF will bring.

Single-Stream Recycling Single-stream is a system where all materials are placed into a single curbside bin so that residents do not have to separate their recyclables by type. Materials are then transported to a MRF where they are sorted and processed.

Recycling Changes While the MRF will not cause considerable changes to the recycling guidelines, there will be some minor changes implemented when the City starts taking materials to the new site. The most notable change will be that the City will no longer accept “bulky, rigid plastics” such as crates, buckets and baskets.

Stay Informed Follow Lansing Public Service on social media for more information on upcoming recycling changes.

Why Recycle? •

Recycling helps conserve important natural resources.

Recycling helps create jobs and boosts the economy.

Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste in the community and environment. lansingmi.gov | SUMMER 2020 | 24
