Six Easy Holiday Resolutions to Throw Away Less Stuff Since holiday celebrations and the New Year are rapidly approaching, most of us make an effort to keep a New Year’s resolution or two. Whether we try to save money, lose weight, or quit certain habits, one habit worth breaking is throwing away items that can be reused or recycled. Every year, landfills take on more and more things we no longer want or need. In fact, in 2015, Texans added about 33.5 million tons of stuff to them. That’s more than six-and-a-half pounds of trash per Texan per day! And at this rate, we only have enough landfill space to last another 56 years.

Texas Power Switch The Auction was a Success! The most recent Lancaster Power Switch energy auction was a great success! iChoosr secured a very competitive rate with Texans Energy. The last Lancaster Power Switch program has closed. A new winter program will open on November 25th. You can pre-register today at www.texaspowerswitch.com/lancaster and we'll let you know the results of the energy auction in January. If you haven’t already signed up, join your friends and neighbors and find out if you could save on your energy bills. WWW.LANCASTER-TX.COM - PAGE 9

Holiday Lights Tips Holiday excitement this time of year sends many Texans into a flurry of decorating their homes, schools, and offices. The star of most holiday displays is the light show, with strings, ropes, nets, and icicles festooning your office cube, front door, landscape, or your whole house! NASA satellites have recorded nighttime light from major US cities shining 20 to 50 percent brighter around Christmas and New Year’s Day. Beautiful as they are, these lights can strain your energy bill over the course of a season. They also create opportunities to both add to and prevent landfill waste. Consider several options to “Take Care of Texas” this holiday season. Choose LED Many lighting formats, including string lights, nets, ropes, icicles, and lights of various sizes, are available in an LED option. LED lights typically use considerably less energy and last longer than incandescent lights. Look for Energy Star-certified lights, which have been tested to ensure that they use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and even come with a warranty of three years or more. The increased efficiency and durability will save you money, use less energy, and create less waste. Set a Timer Simply plugging your lights in and leaving them on all night wastes energy. When installing your lights and decorations, save energy and money by connecting them to a simple, inexpensive timer to ensure that the lights will shine and beautify your home or office only when people are most likely to enjoy them. Repair the Repairable Electronic holiday decorations often take a beating from the elements and tend to come out of storage mysteriously tangled and damaged. Keep them out of landfills with a little DIY repair! If your string of lights is missing a light or two, individual replacement bulbs are easy to find and inexpensive. Yard inflatables that leak air and don’t dance with the same passion that they once did can be repaired by sewing or patched with transparent duct tape.

Census 2020 is Coming!

CENSUS 2020

Everyone COUNTS!

In 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau begins its once-a-decade tradition of counting every person in the United States. A census form is sent to all households in the country, with most households receiving the form in midMarch. Information collected from the census include a phone number, whether the home is owned or rented, and the number of residents in each household, including their age, gender, race/ethnicity, citizenship and relationship to one another. Individual responses to the census are securely collected and not shared with the public or federal agencies for 72 years. The Census Bureau is making it easier than ever to respond by allowing you to submit your form online, by phone, by mail.

Census 2020 Shaping Lancaster’s Future

About the Census Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau does a census to count the number of people living in the United States. The first U.S. census was in 1790. Data collected by the decennial census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Texas currently has 36 members, but is likely to gain additional seats after the 2020 Census.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available to Texas Small Businesses SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Small nonfarm businesses in 34 Texas counties are now eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary counties that began Aug. 20, 2019. Primary counties: Brazos, Falls, Grimes, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Medina, Robertson and Tarrant; Neighboring counties: Anderson, Atascosa, Bandera, Bell, Bexar, Burleson, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Freestone, Frio, Hill, Houston, Johnson, McLennan, Milam, Montgomery, Navarro, Parker, Uvalde, Walker, Waller, Washington, Wise and Zavala. “SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers that have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by the disaster,” Garfield said. Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred. “Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 4 percent for businesses and 2.75 percent for private nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years, and are available to small businesses and most private nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said. By law, SBA makes Economic Injury Disaster Loans available when the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster. The Secretary declared this disaster on Oct. 19, 2019. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency about the U.S. Department of Agriculture assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration. However, nurseries are eligible for SBA disaster assistance in drought disasters. PAGE 24 - LANCASTER TODAY - DECEMBER 2019
