DID YOU KNOW ? Flood Safety

Last fall and winter Lake Elsinore experienced large volumes of rain. In anticipation of the upcoming “rainy season”, the City encourages residents and businesses to take this time to review preparedness plans. Flood Warning System. Stay informed, flood events generally result from heavy rains over a period of days. • Email Notification: Sign up at http://www.lake-elsinore.org/city-services/online-services/e-subscribe. • Cell phone or land-line: http://countyofriverside.us/Residents/Emergencies/EarlyWarningNotification System.aspx • Emergency Services Personnel: Will be sent out by the City to notify residents of the need to evacuate once an emergency has been declared. Join the Lake Elsinore Citizen Corps. For more information visit: http://www.lake-elsinore.org/residents/get-involved/citizen-corps • Emergency Alert System (EAS): Check All Local TV and Radio stations (FM 101.3, 95.1) and Newspapers to stay current with rising water conditions. Safety During a Storm. The following tips may be helpful: • Be prepared to evacuate before the water level reaches your property. Move valuables to upper floors or higher elevations. • Keep a battery powered radio tuned to a local station. Follow emergency instructions given. • If you are caught in the house by rising waters, move to the second floor and if necessary to the roof. Take warm clothing, a flashlight and a portable radio with you. Wait for help. Don’t try to swim to safety. Rescue teams will look for you. • Remember: WATER DEPTHS DURING FLOODS ARE DECEPTIVE. Try to avoid flooded areas and DO NOT attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters. • Turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve if evacuation appears necessary. • Sanitize and fill bathtubs, sinks and jugs with clean water in case regular supplies are contaminated. • Bring outdoor possessions inside the house or tie them down securely. • Stock the car with blankets, first aid kit, flashlights, dry clothing and any special medication needed by your family. Park the car in an area safe from rising waters. Flood Insurance - For many, a home and its contents is their greatest investment. There is a 26% chance of experiencing a flood over the life of a 30-year mortgage. It is important to realize that standard homeowner and renter insurance policies do not cover losses due to flooding. Coverage is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). You are encouraged to buy flood insurance whether or not your home is located within a FEMA mapped flood hazard area. The City’s participation in the Community Rating System enables residents of the City to receive a discount on flood insurance. Call your insurance agent or contact the National Flood Insurance Program at FloodSmart.gov or (888) 379-9531. There is a 30-day waiting period before coverage goes into effect, so don’t delay, call today! For more information or assistance contact an Engineering Technician at 951-674-3124, ext. 915 or visit the City’s FEMA webpage at www.lake-elsinore.org.

S t o r m w a ter P ollu tion, w h a t y o u shou ld k n ow … Many City residents are unaware that drain openings in the curb area of the street are connected to storm drains which are connected to the local waterways, so whatever ends up in the storm drains flows directly to our rivers, lakes, and streams. Urban runoff is an important source of water for the Lake, as long as it is clean runoff. Throughout the dry part of the year, pollutants such as motor oil, antifreeze, trash, pet waste, and grease build up on streets and parking lots. Common activities such as over watering lawns and landscaped areas, car washing and hosing down driveways cause pollutants to make their way into the storm drain and then to the Lake. During the rainy season, rain water carries these pollutants into the storm drain which then carries them to the Lake. The City through its own efforts and through those of multi-agency task force actively seeks and implements activities to reduce the effect of pollutants on the lake, such as the operation of the aeration and mixing system and the addition of treated reclaimed water. What can you do? Before you throw something away or clean outside areas, ask yourself, “Will the waste end up in the storm drain?” If the answer is yes, we recommend you; • Use dry (sweep, vacuum, rags) cleanup methods, • Wash over or direct water runoff to landscape/grassy areas, • Use bio-degradeable cleaners, and • Dispose of cleaners, paints, yard care products, household chemicals at the City Household Hazardous Waste drop-off, call 951-674-5170 for the schedule or visit www.lake-elsinore.org/ public works department web page for dates. • Report illegal dumping or discharges at: http://www.lake-elsinore.org/city-services/online-services/report-an-issue or (800) 506-2555. For more helpful hints and information and to subscribe our FREE E-NEWSLETTER visit http://www.rcwatershed.org/.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE Each month, the City of Lake Elsinore partners with the County of Riverside to offer hazardous waste and e-waste disposal at no cost to Lake Elsinore residents. Collections are held on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Public Works Yard located at 521 N. Langstaff.
