Common parking restrictions

No stopping Vehicles are not permitted to stop in a no stopping area unless traffic conditions require it (eg. queuing in traffic). No stopping areas are defined by signs or as a solid yellow line on the road surface adjacent to, and parallel with, the kerb.

No parking Vehicles are not permitted to park in an area where no parking signage applies.

Vehicles may stop for a maximum of two minutes to set down or pick up passengers or goods. Vehicles must not be left unattended.

Paid parking Where a fee is required to be purchased from a parking meter or through a payment application, the fee paid is only valid for the area it was purchased. If a physical ticket is required to be displayed, ensure it is clearly visible. Please ensure to comply with all restrictions.

Time limited parking The maximum permissible period of parking time (e.g. 2P = 2 hours maximum, 1/2P = 30 minutes maximum, etc.) is displayed on the sign. The vehicle must be moved from the area when the maximum parking time has expired.

Multi-use zone Multiple signs may identify different restrictions, or conditions, that apply at different times of the day or night. Each section of the sign must be read in conjunction with the other sections. The applicable hours of operation for each purpose will be shown on the signs.

Parking on footpaths Parking on or across footpaths, dual use paths and bicycle paths is strictly prohibited.

Footpaths are constructed to provide a safe walking environment for pedestrians, away from vehicles.

Motorists may not always appreciate the difficulties and dangers which can be caused to pedestrians when vehicles are parked across footpaths. Parking on verges Consent must be obtained from the owner or occupier of land (or property) before a person may drive, park, or stop a vehicle on the verge adjacent to that land. If consent has not been provided by the owner or occupier, they may report details of the offending vehicle to City Officers and an infringement may be issued.

Parking near intersections Vehicle obstructions at intersections have proven to be a major contributor to vehicle and pedestrian accidents. It is important that both pedestrians and motorists can easily see, and be seen by, any oncoming traffic before they enter a street. Unless signs or markings on the street indicate otherwise, vehicles may not: •

Parking facing oncoming traffic For safety reasons, a vehicle stopped or parked on the road must be facing in the same direction as the flow of traffic. Under the City’s Parking Local Law 2023 and the Road Traffic Code 2000, it is an offence to stop or park a vehicle facing the opposite direction to the flow of traffic.

Parking on median strips Median strips and traffic islands are physical provisions used to divide traffic and to enhance safety on busy arterial roads. Parking on or in these areas is not permitted as it poses a risk to the safety of pedestrians and other road users.

Parking within parks, reserves, and foreshores All beaches along the City’s coastline are classified as foreshore reserves. Driving or parking a vehicle on a reserve is prohibited. Parking is also prohibited on all parks and reserves within the city unless an area has been designated for the parking of vehicles.

Parking while selling a vehicle Advertising a vehicle for sale, or hire, on any part of a car park, road, verge, or median strip is an offence under the City’s Parking Local Law 2023. Drivers that park a vehicle, which is offered for sale or hire in these areas, may be issued with an infringement notice.
