On Thursday, October 21, 2021 Partnership Gwinnett hosted the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment summit (MARS) at Studio Movie Grill in Duluth, GA. The summit convened elected officials, city and county staff, and development industry leadership to highlight the many redevelopment projects shaping the region. Ellen Dunham Jones, professor and director of the Master of Science in Urban Design at Georgia Tech, gave the keynote address. Her work in retrofitting shed light on urban design principles behind the redesigning of suburbs and highlighted many of the aspects included in redevelopments which received recognition during the summit.

Three awards were given to small, medium, and large redevelopments. Congratulations to the City of Jonesboro & Hogan Construction Group, LLC on their success of Broad Street Plaza in Downtown Jonesboro. Broad Street Plaza received the Small Redevelopment Award recognizing a partner whose development project is under one acre. Congratulations City of Jonesboro and Hogan Construction!

Sure do miss Henry and his Barber Shop downtown, listening to all the “old guys” tell their stories.

If he was still around now days I guess he would charge me a finder’s fee….that’s what he told my Dad who was bald. My Dad told Henry he should be charged half price since he was bald. Thinking back about my Dad this morning and recalling the time I rode my bike into Jonesboro for a haircut at Henry's across from the Train Depot. I told Henry to trim around my ears, he did, and I rode back home. Dad was working in the yard and looked at me as I walked up. He said, “I thought I told you to get a haircut; ride back up there and tell Henry to give me my money’s worth.” Well I did, and Henry asked me why I was back, so I told him what Dad had said. He smiled and said, “Well, sit down in the chair”.....from that point forward things were always high and tight. No shaggy hair in Ross Palmer's house!

(Jep Palmer is a native of Jonesboro. His parents Ross and Dot Palmer ( both deceased), made their home with three daughters and one son (Jep) on South Main Street for many years. Jep graduated from Jonesboro High School, studied Wildlife Technology at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and retired from the Clayton County Water Authority. Jep and his wife, Dixie, are the parents of two children. Jep was a student in Mayor Day’s third grade class at Lee Street Elementary in 1973.)
