Purpose National Alliance of Preservation Commissions conference. I received a scholarship to attend that covers most costs with the exception of the per diem.
How did the travel apply to the job? The NAPC conference directly relates to my everyday duties in the Preservation Division. I will apply the knowledge I gained from the training on a daily basis. Topics covered in the session I attended included incorporating underrepresented communities into the preservation program, tackling zoning conflicts and effective overlays, out of the box outreach, improving the preservation ordinance, and updating outdated National Register nominations.
How did training add value to the city? Training covered everything from how to more effectively communicate with citizens/applicants to conducting effective outreach to better understand and applying zoning to historic districts. I attended eight in-person sessions and will be able to apply what I learned on a daily basis.
General comments: I find this preservation training to be the most cost effective and most applicable to my job. The interaction with my peers also allows for some constructive dialogue with others in the field. I look forward to attending again in 2028, as this conference is held biennially.
