TRAILS RAILS FROM TO
Great American stories start in Independence and have for almost 200 years. Covered wagons still move through the streets of the historic Independence Square, and the restored train depot celebrates the great journeys that brought travelers through the city. Now, it’s your turn.
This city is built on stories of trailblazers seeking opportunities in the west. Earning the name "Queen City of the Trails," because it was the start of the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails, Independence became the hub for trade and commerce for tens of thousands of pioneers. Today the stories of innovation and sacrifice of those pioneers are on display for you to discover.

FROM TRAILS
A local icon's commitment to the art of historical storytelling
“You have to find something you’re passionate about or called to and go after it. That is what made our nation great, people that followed their dreams.” - Ralph Goldsmith
Ralph Goldsmith lives his dream every day operating Pioneer Trails Adventures, the coveredwagon tour showcasing the rich history of Independence. His gift of storytelling captivates audiences and brings America’s trailblazing history into the present day.
At each stop on his tour, he reveals new nuggets of history. By the end, you walk away with a deeper understanding of what life was like for families nearly 200 years ago. You discover the pioneers paved more than just ruts in the ground. Their sacrifice, hardships, and innovation paved the trail for our lives today.
“Those pioneers, their courage, their strength, and their stamina, they’re the ones that made us a nation from sea to shining sea,” said Goldsmith.
For 26 years, Goldsmith has led people through the history of America’s Westward Expansion by pulling people into the past with his stories and mules. Yes, mules, not horses. He’ll explain that important detail during his tour.

Did You Know?
Independence, Missouri, is well-known as the "jumping off" point for pioneers heading west. We are called "Queen City of the Trails" for this very reason. With historic sites and monuments around every corner, when you experience Independence, you experience history in a whole new light.
Ralph Goldsmith operates Pioneer Trails Adventures, a covered-wagon tour through the historic streets of Independence.
Ralph’s wagon is primarily pulled by two mules, shown here
are two ladies called Bess and Mary Margaret, named for Harry S. Truman’s wife, Mrs. Bess Truman, and his daughter.

This unique journey led by Goldsmith's prized mules covers history almost 200 years old. From the start of the Westward trails, Civil War battlegrounds, and the bank robberies of Frank and Jesse James, stories come to life on the streets of this modern-day Midwest town.
"What a lot of folks don't realize is more Civil War battles were fought in Missouri than any other state except for Virginia and Tennessee," said Goldsmith. "Two were fought right here on our streets of Independence."

Pioneer Trails Adventures offers three tours for you to choose from depending on your schedule. A 20-minute tour takes you through the Historic Independence Square featuring the Jackson County Courthouse. His 45-minute tour takes you through the city limits of Independence and features 10 locations. If you have the time, we recommend the 90-minute tour showcasing the full history of Independence including stops in front of the Harry S Truman Home. Each tour is engaging, fun, and an experience your whole family will enjoy!
“Harry Truman was an incredible guy, and the migration West, two Civil War battles, it’s all right here,” said Goldsmith. “If you want to learn, really learn, what started us as a nation, you need to visit the three-square miles around downtown Independence.”
It's a history lesson kids won't forget! Students can take the Pioneer Trails tour as part of their field trip to the National Frontier Trails Museum. School administrators can add the tour to the field trip agenda when they call the museum to schedule. Find out more about NFTM on page 14.

Innovation Steamed Ahead
“Those who went West walked from here to California or Oregon.
But when the steam engine was developed, not many people wanted to walk to California if they could ride on the train.”- John Thornton
Trails gave way to train rails. America’s westward expansion picked up steam thanks to the railroad revolution. A tour of the Chicago & Alton Depot brings to life the railway’s history. It’s believed to be the only completely restored two-story train depot in Missouri.
“The fact that we were able to save this depot and use it as a vehicle to tell more of the history of Independence, makes it more meaningful to me,” said John Thornton, President of the Friends of the Chicago & Alton Depot.
John Thornton, President of the Friends of the Chicago & Alton Depot, shown outside of the historically preserved depot in Independence, Missouri.

Thornton is one of several volunteers credited with restoring this time capsule and the more than 1,000 unique items found inside. Train bells, tickets, conductor hats, and whistles are just some of the railroad items on display.
The guided tour takes a little more than an hour and includes an exact replica of an 1879 train station waiting room, the stationmaster’s residence, and model railroads of all shapes and sizes. Every room, and every item, has a story.
Chicago & Alton Depot Timeline
1879
C&A Depot is built in Independence, MO, as part of the completion of the famous “Triangle” of service between Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City.
1960
C&A Depot is closed to passenger and freight traffic. Only telegraph operators manned the station until its abandonment in 1972.

Many of the items in the Depot's collection have been donated by local community members and volunteer staff.
“I think they walk away with a sense of history that they didn’t know much about and some of these things tell the story of where we are now,” said Thornton.

NATIONAL FRONTIER TRAILS MUSEUM
THE PURCHASE THAT PUT INDEPENDENCE ON THE MAP
Thomas Jefferson knew the future of the United States was West. His decision to purchase the Louisiana Territory made Independence the cosmopolitan last stop for those seeking gold and prosperity.
The National Frontier Trails Museum tells the great story of Westward Expansion. Pioneers by the thousands formed wagon trains that embarked across the American West. These wagon trains followed several specific trails, which were the superhighways of the past.

The Last Familiar Stop for Trailblazers
The National Frontier Trails Museum is the only museum in the nation certified by the National Park Service as an interpretive site for five National Historic trails:
1. The Lewis and Clark Trail
2. The Santa Fe Trail
3. The Oregon Trail
4. The California Trail
5. The Mormon Pioneer Trail
Independence became the “jumping off” point as it was the last city for pioneers to stock up on supplies before venturing into the unknown.
Every year, thousands of history buffs and researchers journey to Independence to see the original artifacts, diaries, letters – and even the wagon tracks – from the pioneers.
Independence became the Queen City of the Trails out of necessity. Thousands congregated in town to load up their wagons for the long westward journey. The constant exodus of wagon trains leaving Independence ultimately contributed to its growth. You can walk freely through the museum or set up special tours with museum guides.
One of the trails' most famous pioneers crossed the plains by wagon, train, automobile, and airplane. Come to the National Frontier Trails Museum to find out who he was! Did You Know?

Santa C a liGon
The SantaCaliGon festival turns the historic Independence square into a multi-day celebration. Named after the three trails, Santa Fe – California – and Oregon, SantaCaliGon honors the city’s role in the development of the West.
Originally called Three Trails Days, a contest was held to come up with a permanent name. A woman by the name Velma Katschkowsky penned the name SantaCaliGon and she won. However, it wasn’t until 1974 when the name took hold and officially became the name we enjoy today.
SantaCaliGon is one of the region’s oldest and largest festivals, attracting hundreds of thousands of people every year. Presented by the Independence Chamber of Commerce, it takes more than 400 volunteers to create this carnivalfair experience that includes homage to the history of Independence’s role in outfitting pioneers for their journey.

LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION!
Independence shines in the new Hallmark Christmas Classic

It was love at first sight on the historic Independence Square for Hallmark executives.
Independence had a starring role as the main character’s hometown in the Christmas movie, ‘Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Christmas story’. The city’s charm caught the eye of Hallmark executives after seeing a promotional NFL video featuring some Independence restaurants and the Kansas City Chiefs.
“The Kansas City Chiefs did a promotional video called ‘Falling for Football’, and they did it in the style of a Hallmark movie,” said Jeff Rogers, Independence Square Association president. “Hallmark reached out to the NFL and said, ‘Hey, we see what you did, maybe we should talk,’ and thus the entire movie was born.”
A talent scout recognized the Independence Square is the quintessential Hallmark town. Anchored by the Historic Truman Courthouse, the downtown square hosts multiple events throughout the year –including the annual Square Lighting with more than a mile of lights every Christmas.
"That location scout said, ‘Hey, there's one more place I would like for you to look at,” recalled Rogers. “When they landed they said, ‘This is it. This is the spot. This looks like a Hallmark movie.”
Downtown Independence transformed to a holiday wonderland during the hot July summer for filming. News of the movie attracted hundreds of people to Independence every night.
“They see an invitation to come where holiday movies and memories are made,” said Rogers.
“I've talked to several people who saw that and made their way to Independence.”
