Meetings with leaders at State Capitol

How did the travel apply to the job?

One of my job duties as External Affairs & Special Events Coordinator is to track legislation and to implement effective strategies related to proposed and/or adopted legislation. During this trip I worked with our contracted lobbyist to testify in opposition to HB 1316 which would end the Rental Ready Program in Independence. I met with the following elected officials and/or staff to discuss issues of importance to the City of Independence:

Rep. Don Fowler

Sen. Tracy McCreery (COS Emily O’Laughlin)

Rep. Peggy McGaugh

Sen. Joe Nicola

Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern

Rep. Cameron Parker

Rep. Brandon Phelps

Rep. Mike Steinmeyer

Rep. Kemp Strickler

How did training add value to the city?

I discussed a state funding increase of $1 million for the ARCH program with Rep. Steinmeyer. I worked to oppose HB 1316 which if enacted would end the Rental Ready Program. Rental Ready provides the tenants in Independence with peace of mind knowing that their residence is safe and meets a basic standard of living. I discussed a potential crime lab for Independence with multiple legislators and their staffs. A Regional Crime Lab in Independence would be invaluable to the City of Independence as well as 21 counties and 16 law enforcement agencies in Western Missouri.

General comments:

The legislators that I spoke with were generally interested in our priorities. We have a good legislative delegation that is working hard for us and our priorities.

Missouri Parks & Recreation Association Conference

How did the travel apply to the job?

The Missouri Parks & Recreation Conference provided a setting to interact with a variety of parks & recreation professionals from around the state through educational sessions and conference activities.

How did training add value to the city?

Connections made with vendor exhibitors for planned and possible future activities. Information learned in scheduled classes. I was also able to discuss shared work experiences and get a variety of perspectives from other professionals, students and park commission members through conference activities.
