CITY OF HOPE ORANGE COUNTY 2020 Impact Report

THANK YOU Friends, When I look back on 2020, I will remember the uncertainty of an unprecedented year. But I will also remember hope. My hope springs from the tremendous progress we have made in bringing the vision for City of Hope Orange County to life — from opening our first location at City of Hope Newport Beach to starting construction on a world-class cancer campus in Irvine. But most of all, I am lifted by the stories of patients like Todd Kennedy and his wife Diane. They came to City of Hope because of our expertise in a rare blood cancer, but that meant spending exhausting hours on the road, making nearly 70 long trips from Coto de Caza to our Duarte campus. Now, Todd is in remission and receives immunotherapy nearby at City of Hope Newport Beach. People like Todd and Diane are the reason we embarked on this ambitious endeavor. City of Hope’s progress and resilience this year would not be possible without you — our donors and supporters. That’s why I want to share some of the milestones you have helped make possible in Orange County. Thank you for the warm welcome to the community and for helping us fulfill our promise to bring our highly specialized cancer care, lifesaving treatments and pioneering research closer to home. This is a wonderful beginning. We have much more work to do and I look forward to the year ahead. Be well,

Annette M. Walker, M.H.A. President, City of Hope Orange County

A LOOK BACK AT 2020

“It’s everything to be here and to watch my kids grow up. Because of you, I will be able to receive specialized care close to home in Orange County.”

We’ve made so much progress. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Tabitha Paccione, Stage 4 lung cancer survivor in remission since 2019

A new era of cancer care begins. City of Hope Newport Beach opened its doors, answering the call from patients and the community for highly specialized care closer to home.

“ I had tears in my eyes. Ringing the Bell of Hope is

an important milestone, and it’s also an encouraging signal of hope for our other patients undergoing chemotherapy — they know that someone has completed the same journey they are on.”

Prepandemic, City of Hope Orange County invited more than 500 City of Hope experts, patients and Orange County community members to give feedback on the cancer center and hospital plans. This included interactive design sessions and an opportunity to walk through life-size mock-ups of clinical spaces. Every aspect of our facilities is being designed to foster leading-edge care, a patient-centric focus and flexibility to address the community’s needs as they evolve over time.

MARCH

JULY

A Specialty Team Assembles City of Hope Newport Beach assembled a team of physicians who possess unique cancer expertise, including an internationally recognized researcher in multiple myeloma treatment, a pioneer in kidney and bladder cancer, one of the country’s leading experts and researchers on colorectal cancer, and a surgeon focusing exclusively on breast surgery and aesthetic reconstruction. Since so many types of cancer exist, it’s critical that — from the initial diagnosis — patients have access to a dedicated team that specializes in exactly that form of the disease.

City of Hope Orange County welcomed preeminent oncologist Edward S. Kim, M.D., M.B.A., as physician-in-chief of Orange County. He is among the country’s foremost experts in molecular prognostication for lung, head and neck cancers, which greatly advances cancer detection and personalized therapies. His recruitment marked a critical milestone for fulfilling City of Hope’s promise of enhancing local access to cancer breakthroughs and becoming a national best practice center for health care delivery.

City of Hope Newport Beach celebrated its first patient to ring the Bell of Hope, a tradition that signals the end of a chemotherapy journey.

Adapting Patient Care Amid a Pandemic Almost overnight, City of Hope rapidly adapted patient care and research protocols amid the pandemic. City of Hope Newport Beach implemented new policies and transitioned to telehealth appointments to minimize risk. Thanks to decades of experience protecting immunocompromised patients, City of Hope is well-prepared to address the challenges of COVID-19, and our patients continue to receive the critical care they need.

Thanks to generous donors, City of Hope raised $1.3 million to aid in the fight against breast and gynecological cancers as part of its 24th annual Walk for Hope. City of Hope’s Orange County team was the top Walk for Hope fundraising group. Orange County resident Leslie Seigel and her son Josh were this year’s City of Hope Walk Ambassadors. Both are cancer survivors who were treated at City of Hope.

City of Hope received the keys to unlock the future home on our Irvine cancer campus. The passing of the keys from FivePoint, the building’s former owners and our visionary partners in this ambitious endeavor, signified a milestone moment: our official arrival in the Irvine community.
