Beginners Ballet for Seniors (Ages 50+)

Ballet is an excellent way to practice balance and improve fitness! Our class will incorporate beginner ballet steps and poses along with simple, fun dance combinations to help with posture, strength and flexibility. Senior Line Dancing (Ages 50+)

This intermediate to advanced level class is not only a great form of exercise and a good way to maintain or improve focus; it's also so much fun! Walk With Ease (Ages 50+)

Participation in this six-week Arthritis Foundation program may reduce the pain of arthritis and improve your overall health! Whether you need relief from arthritis or just want to be as active as you can be, this program will teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. Materials for the class will be provided, but please bring your own water.

Cardio Drumming (Drums Alive Golden Beats) (Ages 50+)

The rhythmic patterns of the drum increase synchronization of brain wave activity and endorphins and decrease negative feelings. This modified evidenced-based program, specially designed for the senior population, is taught by a Drums Alive Golden Beats certified instructor. Registration is required. Chair Yoga (Ages 50+)

Participants will work on improving flexibility and strength, focus on improving balance in standing poses and develop mindfulness and relaxation techniques. We will learn seated and standing positions for strength and balance, then practice stretching, followed by a brief relaxation and meditation period to conclude the session. Participants should be able to maintain both seated and standing positions with the assistance of a chair. Registration is required; please contact the Senior Center at 336.883.3584.

Senior Yoga (Ages 50+)

The practice of yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It helps with breathing and posture, as well as meditation to integrate your mind. Prevention, Awareness, Lecture and Screening (Ages 50+)

Falls are fairly common for people age 65 and older, but in this program sponsored by Rehab Without Walls, we will learn skills that can help prevent them or may reduce the severity of injuries if they do happen. Please stop by the Senior Center to register or call 336.883.3584.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) (Ages 50+)

We are pleased to offer a low-impact recreational exercise program with a brief educational component that may help those with arthritis at all activity levels improve functional ability, self-confidence, self-care, mobility, muscle strength and coordination. Martial Arts - Triad Hapkido Self-Defense (Ages 4+)

Try your KICK at self-defense classes with Triad Hapkido! This technique is a Korean style martial art that focuses on self-defense, discipline, self-esteem, confidence and courage while building on fitness.

Dog Obedience (Ages 18+)

Qualified instructors will teach owners and dogs basic commands and socialization skills. Dogs must be at least eight weeks old. Participants must bring the pet's shot records, a six-foot, non-retractable leash, a choke collar and treats.

A Matter of Balance (Ages 50+)

This class is evidence-based, with results indicating that participants taking the classes have fewer falls than those who did not. The class includes light exercise and provides information on how to overcome the fear of falling by addressing unfounded fears and behavior modification. Sponsored by Area Agency on Aging.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education

Middle/High Homeschool Days (Ages 13 - 17)

Join us for our series of Homeschool Days at PEC! Designed for older homeschool students from ages 13 - 17, these programs will have both staff-led and parent-led portions.

September: Magnificent Migratory Birds

We have all heard about how the fantastic distance birds like the Artic Tern fly during migration, but did you ever wonder how they are able to complete such a journey? During this month’s Homeschool Day we will learn more about bird migration and factors that may affect it.

October: Indicator Species

Indicator species help scientists monitor the environment so that effective decisions can be made about ecosystem management. Their presence can help determine the health of the natural community, or signal changes taking place within the ecosystem. We will spend the day learning about indicator species, how to identify them and then seeing which ones we can find! We will meet at our North Preserve to begin; parking is available at Jamestown Park and Golf Course.

November: Permaculture and the Environment

Simple changes in how we garden or maintain our landscape can have a big impact on the native ecosystem of which we are a part. This program will explore an environmentallyfriendly approach to land management and design known as permaculture. Participants will learn about the history of land use at PEC and permaculture methods that can also be used at home.

December: Winter with the Birds

From Cedar Waxwings to Ring-necked Ducks, this program will teach participants to identify winter birds and ways we can contribute to citizen science projects that help scientists track bird populations.

Discovery Hike: Deep River Trail (Ages 12+)

As the seasons change, so does natural life on our trails. During this hike on the Deep River Trail of PEC's North Preserve we will observe a variety of plants and animals as they prepare for the colder months. Please meet in the parking lot at Jamestown Park and Golf Course by 9 a.m. Participants should be prepared to hike on an unpaved trail and are encouraged to bring along a pair of binoculars.

Strolling with Salamanders (Ages 13+)

What is lurking around after dusk? While walking through the darkening woods we will be flipping logs and rocks in search of an important indicator species: salamanders. We will practice identifying them and learn how to practice safe handling of these delicate amphibians. Participants will meet in the Piedmont Environmental Center parking lot at 5 p.m. and carpool over to the North Preserve to begin our adventure. Children must be accompanied by an adult and are asked to bring a flashlight.

Wonderful Winter Bird Walk (Ages 13+)

On the seventh day of December my local environmental center gave to me: a Wonderful Winter Bird Walk! We will practice our bird identification skills on our outdoor adventure, using both binoculars and the spotting scope. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education

Fall Leaf Kayak Tour (Ages 16+)

Enjoy a guided kayak tour of the lovely Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake during its most scenic season. On our tour, facilitated by PEC Park Supervisor Dick Thomas, we will see an abundance of beautiful seasonal colors with the changing of the leaves; we may even see some wildlife! Registration begins October 1.

Down East: Exploring by Kayak the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge (Ages 18+)

A weekend of fun and discovery awaits you! Kayak paddling in the marshes and small bays of the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge provides a firsthand look at estuaries supporting marine life, wading bird communities and an abundance of other wildlife. You will camp at Cedar Island Ranch and Campground and day paddle an average of five miles on Friday and Saturday. There may also be an opportunity to hike/ explore the North River Wetlands Preserve and the Rachel Carson Preserve near Beaufort. All meals (except for Thursday night), plus camping fees, transportation, kayaks and safety gear, guides and instructors are provided. Please call PEC for more information.

A Step in the Right Direction (Ages 18+)

Take a step in the right direction by learning the basics of map reading and using a compass - plus a few little-known details - without assistance from electronics! Participants will examine the characteristics of six types of maps, discussing the pros and cons of each, then practice using three different types of compasses. A short walk on the trails helps determine pace and how far one can travel in a set number of steps. Finally, putting pace, map and compass together, we will plot a course and go out to find the "treasures" placed on the trails.

Fall Leaf Tours (All Ages)

Enjoy a long-standing High Point tradition on this annual guided tour, which takes park visitors around High Point City Lake on our excursion boat. During the 45-minute experience, participants learn about seasonal changes and the wildlife in and around the lake from PEC's Parks Supervisor, Dick Thomas. Dick's entertaining and informative commentary, combined with amazing photographic opportunities, make this offering a seasonal favorite. Chili Cook-Off (Ages 18+)

Do you think you make the best chili? Let's compare yours to versions prepared by some of High Point's other home cooks, and we'll let the community decide whose version tastes the best! The top three chilis getting the most votes each win a prize and bragging rights. Not interested in cooking? Come taste chili and help us choose the winners! All chilis must provide a full ingredient list to be displayed beside their chilis.

Legal Aid Healthcare POA & Living Wills Clinic (Ages 50+)

The Senior Center will host a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Wills Clinic and information session, led by Legal Aid of North Carolina and students from the Elon University School of Law. Participants must pre-register by contacting the Senior Center at 336.883.3584; please note that very limited space is available. They will then receive a follow-up screening call from the legal team, to determine if they meet financial eligibility requirements. Based on those results, Legal Aid will fully prepare and execute one or both of the advance directives documents for qualified individuals at the clinic. The information session on healthcare power of attorney and living wills will also be available during this clinic to participants who didn't qualify or were unable to get a one-on-one appointment.

Trails & Greenways

High Point Greenway

The High Point Greenway is a 4.9-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 E. Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (This trail connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center)

Bicentennial Greenway

The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails

High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Southwest Heritage Greenway

This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail

A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.

Urban Hikes

In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.
