Big Three Challenger Basketball League (Ages 8 - 40) Start the new year off by joining the Big Three Challenger Basketball league, presented by High Point Parks & Recreation in partnership with the Greensboro and Kernersville Parks and Recreation departments! Morehead Recreation Center Thursdays, January 18 - February 29, 6 - 7 p.m. $10 per participant Variety Hour with ASPIRE (Ages 8+) This program is designed to help participants with disabilities expand their leisure and recreation interests in a safe indoor space during the winter months. Each Wednesday morning, ASPIRE will offer an expanded series of experiences that will include adaptive art forms, exercise techniques and games.

Free Super Social Supper Club (Ages 8+) Learn the basics of restaurant etiquette through this fun and social program. Learn how to place a food order, pay a bill and calculate a tip. All registered participants need to bring money, arrive at 6 p.m. and be picked up by 7:30 p.m.

Visually Impaired Variety Club (Ages 18+) This monthly recreation program provides moral support and social engagement for individuals with vision impairments and their families. Activities vary by location and time each month. Interested participants must register the Friday before the program date.

January 16, February 20, March 23, April 16, May 21 Free High Point Heroes Club (Ages 18+) Those who serve deserve the very best! We are pleased to offer recreational opportunities for local veterans and active duty service members through this unique new program.

January 5, February 2, March 1, April 5, May 3 Free Lucky Strikes Bowling (All Ages) Looking for some weekend fun? Bowlers, friends and families of all abilities are welcome. Ramps are available if needed.

Bowlers will pay High Point Bowling Center directly for their games, not to exceed two games per week. All bowlers must be registered and paid by 9:45 a.m. each week.

Athletics Little Flippers Gymnastics Class (Ages 1 - 4) We'll introduce the aspiring young gymnast to the fundamentals of gymnastics! With assistance from a parent or guardian, this class will focus our participants on balance, coordination, listening skills and following directions.

January 4 - 25, February 1 - 22, February 29 - March 21, April 4 - 25, May 2 - 30 $25 per participant, per month MVP Rookie Sports Camp (Ages 3 - 5) Future MVP rookies will move, stretch and build confidence while learning sports fundamentals and teamwork. Activities include basketball, T-ball, soccer, football and tennis.

Allen Jay Recreation Center Mondays, March 4 - April 15, 6 - 7 p.m. $25 per person More Flips, More Fun Gymnastics and Tumbling Class (Ages 5 - 12) This fun class builds skills in gymnastics and tumbling!

Students will do floor work and utilize the tumble track, beam and vault. We will also focus on physical conditioning and strength training.

Athletics Intermediate - Advanced Level Tennis (Ages 8 - 16) These players are near the competitive level and are beginning to understand the importance of more serious tennis focus and play. Emphasis on point play will be stressed, as well as proper technique and court movement.

High Point Power AAU Basketball Program (Ages 10 - 16) Introducing the AAU High Point Power Basketball Team, a new competitive basketball team that will compete in tournaments throughout the spring and summer season.

Free 2024 Senior Games and Senior Arts (Ages 50+) The Greater High Point Senior Games is a year-round health promotion and wellness education program for adults 50 years of age and better. Our athletic events include badminton, basketball shooting, billiards, bocce, bowling, cornhole, croquet, cycling, shot Put, discus throw, standing and runninglong jumps, football throw, golf, horseshoes, sickleball, shuffleboard, softball throw, swimming, table tennis, tennis and track events. Other competitions include chair volleyball, Wii bowling, bingo and a spelling bee.

SilverArts provides a stage for the creative talents of visual, heritage, literary and performing artists.

Fitness & Exercise Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) (Ages 50+) We are pleased to offer a low-impact recreational exercise program with a brief educational component that may help those with arthritis at all activity levels improve functional ability, self-confidence, self-care, mobility, muscle strength and coordination. February 5 - 26, March 4 - 25, April 1 - 22, April 29 - May 20 $20 per person, per four-week session Chair Yoga (Ages 50+) Participants will work on improving flexibility and strength, focus on improving balance in standing poses and developing mindfulness and relaxation techniques. We will learn seated and standing positions for strength and balance, then practice stretching and a brief relaxation and meditation period to conclude the session. Participants should be able to maintain both seated and standing positions with the assistance of a chair. Registration is required; please contact the Senior Center at 336.883.3584.

Free Tai Chi Chuan (Ages 50+) The practice of Tai Chi Chuan can be useful in fall prevention and in helping older adults gain more control of their health and well-being. In this workshop, sponsored by Rehab Without Walls, participants will work on improving body awareness, balance, coordination, breathing and cognitive abilities. Focus is also placed on improving mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.

Free Let's Walk and Talk (All Ages) Increase your physical activity and join fellow walkers from our community as you walk around the track in our lovely park. Strike up a conversation if you'd like; it definitely makes the time more pleasant and go by faster! You may also choose to track your laps to earn achievement badges at different levels of progress.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education Scales and Scutes (Ages 6+) Do you wonder what a snake's skin feels like or where turtles go in the winter? This program, offered as part of the N.C. Science Festival, will provide an opportunity to learn about the exhibit animals that live at PEC, ask those burning questions, and then watch them eat. We will also visit a "herp habitat" to look for wild snakes and turtles that live in the area.

Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, April 6, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

Free Paleo Camp (Ages 8 - 12) Children ages 8 - 12 are invited to spend the day with PEC staff naturalists, exploring the natural and cultural history of our area. Through engaging activities on the trails, in the tipi and in the classroom, campers will look back in time to learn about five geologic and historic time periods. Activities include hiking forest trails that follow old horse and buggy roadbeds, sorting fossils, spear points and other artifacts, observing plants and animals that provide clues to what life was like long ago and storytelling inside our 20' tipi.

Campers need to dress for the weather and bring a lunch, two snacks and a water bottle.

Piedmont Environmental Center Monday, January 15, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. $35 per PEC member, $40 per non-member Ducks and Donuts (Ages 13+) Enjoy a light breakfast of coffee and donuts, followed by a winter trail walk to look for resident and migratory waterfowl. In addition to wood ducks and mallards, colorful migrant waterfowl such as buffleheads, hooded mergansers and northern shovelers visit High Point City Lake and the ponds around Piedmont Environmental Center. We will discuss natural history and biology and hopefully get a glimpse of these beautiful birds through a spotting scope.

PEC's binoculars can be loaned out if needed.

Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, January 20, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. $4 per PEC member, $5 per non-member Full Moon Night Hike (Ages 13+) As the full moon rises through the trees, we will walk on PEC's trails and explore the nocturnal activities of deer, beaver, owls and more. By the time we return to the building, the moon will be above the tree line and in the perfect position for viewing through our spotting scope and binoculars. Bundle up and bring a flashlight!

Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, February 24, 6 - 8 p.m.

Dendrology: For the Love of Wood (Ages 18+) Participants will learn the basics of how to study woody plants, inside and out, during this four-hour practical workshop. On a walk through the forest, a PEC naturalist will instruct the class on how to identify 15 species of trees.

In addition, participants will learn to use forestry tools to measure the diameter of trees and estimate their age and height. The workshop will conclude with an examination of 15 wood samples for the characteristics that make each suitable for camp craft needs, woodworking and crafting.

Your storyteller will take you back in time to the "old ways" of North America in a series of tales from several native traditions. It may be cold outside, but inside the tipi you will hear about Coyote the trickster, Grandfather Rock, Raven and Blue Jay and Thunder's Lodge around the warmth of a campfire. Participants will be sitting on rugs, but chairs can be provided for the honored elders.

Special Interest Girls II Women (Ages 9+) Today's world throws a lot of challenges at our teens. We will discuss topics like peer pressure, body awareness and good decision-making in a confidential, supportive setting.

We're even going to learn some basic kitchen skills and do a little cooking, as well as stretching exercises for relaxation and fitness activities for wellness. In our group, you can be yourself, and self-awareness leads to positive growth!

Trails & Greenways High Point Greenway The High Point Greenway is a 4.9-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 E. Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

High Point City Lake Park Trail - 0.5 miles (This trail connects High Point City Lake Park with the Piedmont Environmental Center) Bicentennial Greenway The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Southwest Heritage Greenway This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helixshaped walkway that combines art with nature.

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.

Urban Hikes In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.
