Department Happenings Chief Park Ranger Chris Riewe Retires Did you know that High Point is the only municipality in North Carolina that has sworn law enforcement officers as dedicated park rangers? At the end of April, High Point Parks & Recreation wished Chief Park Ranger Chris Riewe the best of luck as he retired from the City of High Point after nearly 30 years of dedicated service. His colleagues from throughout High Point and even other parts of the state, including former park rangers, retirees and even a chief he once worked for and eventually succeeded, came to celebrate the occasion at High Point City Lake Park, where Chief Riewe's City career began. Please join us in thanking Chief Chris Riewe for his commitment to safety and community!

Miracle League Skills Night So many smiles and so much fun as our Miracle League players prepared for their spring 2022 opener with Skills Night in April, generously sponsored by our friends at Planet Fitness. Department Happenings Welcome Quanté Speight!

High Point Parks & Recreation welcomes Quanté Speight, our new Recreation Supervisor! Quanté grew up in Scotland Neck, in eastern North Carolina, as a “parks and rec kid.” He earned a degree from North Carolina A&T State University in recreation administration and has a Master of Arts degree in health and physical education. He also received a Master of Science degree from Ohio University in athletic administration. As Recreation Supervisor, Quanté will be supervising all our recreation centers and their programs. He will also lead all adult and youth athletic programs and oversee outdoor athletic facilities and field rentals.

“Once I understood the impact of parks and recreation on the community, I decided to study it in college and then make it my career to serve others,” said Quanté. Actually, quite a few “parks and rec kids” grow up to pursue jobs in this field of work, and we feel very fortunate to have someone with Quanté’s education and experience join our team of professionals. It’s great to have you on board, Quanté!

Welcome Leigh Clodfelter!

High Point Parks & Recreation is excited to welcome Leigh Clodfelter, our new Administrative Specialist in Marketing! Leigh grew up in Greensboro but now lives in High Point with her husband and daughter. She is a graduate of Guilford College with a degree in computer information systems and has previously worked in advertising and graphic design positions, as well as Guilford County Schools and the NC Zoo. Leigh enjoys birding and photography and says, “I love being outdoors, so promoting everything High Point Parks & Recreation has to offer the community is exciting to me." We're glad to have you on the team, Leigh!

FishAbilities We love our community partnerships! High Point Parks & Recreation's ASPIRE recently partnered with Kernersville Parks and Recreation to offer FishAbilities, an adaptive fishing program. The weather was perfect, the fish were biting and a great time was had by all!

Department Happenings Welcome John Rife!

High Point Parks & Recreation is excited to welcome John Rife, our new Assistant Parks Supervisor at High Point City Lake Park! John grew up in Greensboro and has a bachelor's degree in sports management from Guilford College. He also earned his master's in parks, recreation, tourism and sports management at NC State.

John loves the outdoors, including camping and swimming, and says he is passionate about impacting and serving the community. We are, too, and are very happy to have John join our team of professionals!

Congratulations to Stephanie Hedgecock!

Congratulations to Stephanie Hedgecock, Recreation Coordinator for High Point Parks & Recreation's ASPIRE staff, on receiving the Boggs/Mitchell Award from the Arc of High Point! This award, named for two longtime advocates for recreation programs for people with disabilities, is given to local champions who carry on the spirit of this work. Stephanie works with our Special Olympics, Miracle League and other ASPIRE programs; for more information on how to get involved as a participant or volunteer, please call 336.883.3477.

Miracle League 2022 Opening Game A little late spring wind didn't keep High Point Parks & Recreation’s Miracle League athletes and volunteers from celebrating the opening game of the 2022 spring season on our "Field of Dreams!" We were honored to welcome Dr. Nathan Morelli, a new member of the High Point Parks & Recreation Commission, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The game ended in a tie between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.

There will be an optional fall All-Star Game on Oct. 29 to close out the season. Department Happenings All-Star Cheerleaders Win First Place!

S-U-C-C-E-S-S, that's the way you spell "success!" We are so very proud of our High Point Parks & Recreation All Star Cheerleaders, who brought home first place in the Powerhouse Spirit Nationals in Petersburg, V.A.! Congratulations also to the High Point All-Star Stunt Team, who finished second! This group of 16 talented athletes and four coaches practice twice a week - and have already finished in first place at two other competitions so far this season. Way to go, young ladies!

High Point Power Sixth-Grade Boys Team Congratulations to the High Point Power Sixth-Grade Boys Team, on its second-place finish in the NCAAU State Championship Tournament! Oak Hollow Marina Dock Project New floating docks have been installed at Oak Hollow Marina, matching other recent installations at Festival Park and Sailboat Point. The floating docks allow for fluctuating water levels, can easily weather storms and are cost-effective.

Department Happenings Good Neighbor Award We love our community partnerships! Thank you to the Burns Hill Neighborhood Association for presenting Morehead Recreation Center with one of its "Good Neighbor Awards" at its fifteenth anniversary celebration! Morehead was recognized for hosting the Burns Hill Neighborhood Association's monthly community meetings and for collaborating with the organization on High Point's annual Youth Summit.

Oak Hollow Tennis Courts Refurbished Each spring the outdoor clay courts at Oak Hollow Tennis Center are refurbished with approximately 1,600 pounds of clay. Tennis courts can be constructed from at least four different types of materials, but clay courts are easier on the human body, as the surface absorbs more shock and allows players to conserve slightly more energy throughout the game.

High Point Senior Games Kickoff High Point Parks & Recreation celebrated a great kickoff to the 2022 Greater High Point Senior Games at the Roy B. Culler, Jr. Senior Center, featuring the state champion High Point Rah Rahs Cheerleaders, many Senior Games participants and a vendor fair! The fellowship, fun and fitness that is Senior Games offers over 65 athletic competitions and 35 SilverArts categories. Department Happenings North Carolina Summer Games High Point Parks & Recreation is so proud of our amazing Special Olympics Guilford/High Point athletes for their representation of our community during the recent North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. Lots of medals came back home with this talented and dedicated group, but they are all winners in our eyes for the heart they bring to every competition! Participation in Special Olympics is one option offered by ASPIRE, our Adaptive Sports, Programs and Inclusive Recreation section. Washington Terrace Pool Upgrades High Point Parks & Recreation has recently completed some improvements to the pool at Washington Terrace Park, located at 108 Murray St. in High Point.

The pool shell has been resurfaced, which includes new plaster and tiles. We have also made improvements to the locker rooms! Washington Terrace Pool is open from noon – 6 p.m. daily through early August. Admission is $1.25 per person. Hope to see you soon!

Introducing SmartRec High Point Parks & Recreation is excited to announce a new registration and reservation software to better serve you! SmartRec by Amilia will provide a customerfriendly online experience for you to explore, discover and register for your favorite programs or reserve your outdoor spaces. As we make our transition to this new application, more information will follow on how you can create your account and learn just how easy it is to register for your activities online.

Hedgecock Dog Park Registration and Tag Renewal To use the dog park, you must register your dog(s) with Parks & Recreation by mailing your dog park registration and waiver form along with a copy of your pet's current rabies certificate showing the date given, expiration date and tag number. We will mail you a tag once we verify your information. Please visit our website to obtain a copy of the waiver form. Registration is free.

Blue (2018 - 2019), orange (2019 - 2020), green (2020 2021) or purple (2021 - 2022) tags, those have expired.

Park and Recreation Month High Point Parks & Recreation is joining communities across the country to celebrate Parks & Recreation Month. Held each July, this national event highlights the ways our community is stronger, more vibrant and more resilient because of the programs, facilities and work accomplished by the Parks & Recreation Department.

• According to National Parks & Recreation Association's 2021 Engagement with Parks Report, people place a high value on the programs and services that park and recreation agencies deliver to their local communities every day and strongly support their mission.

• 260 million people in the U.S. visited a local park or recreation facility at least once during the past year.

• Seven out of 10 U.S. residents have at least one local park, playground, open space or recreation center within walking distance of their homes.

• Four out of five U.S. adults seek high-quality parks and recreation when choosing a place to live.

• Eighty-seven percent of people agree that parks and recreation is an important service provided by their local government.

• Nearly nine out of 10 people agree that it is important to fund local park and recreation agencies to ensure every member of the community has equitable access to amenities, infrastructure and programming We’ll be celebrating our staff this month! High Point Parks & Recreation employs 122 full-time, 75 part-time and approximately 97 seasonal staff. They work hard to provide our community with hundreds of programs and events throughout each year; other staff beautifully maintains our 41 parks and two golf courses.

Trails & Greenways High Point Greenway The High Point Greenway is a 4.45-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 East Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Bicentennial Greenway The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Southwest Heritage Greenway This .44-mile paved trail runs between Vail Avenue and Grimes Avenue, with parking located at the Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave.). From Taylor Avenue to Grimes Avenue, enjoy the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, a helix-shaped walkway that combines art with nature.

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.

Urban Hikes In partnership with the High Point Library, we've created an Urban Hikes Map with eight trails starting from the High Point Public Library. All the hikes are accessible by sidewalk.

Get a feel for what it is like to be an aquatic scientist as you explore the wetland and shoreline habitats of PEC. Use water quality tests and learn the basics of water chemistry.

Campers will focus on investigations into the interrelationships between plants and animals and the ecosystem. Using new tools and technology, campers will examine symbiosis, predator/prey relationships, nutrient cycling, biodiversity and more. Activities include dissection of owl pellets, trail camera set-up, pitfall trapping, dendrochronology and insect collection by black light.

Cultural Arts Alternative Performing Arts Ballet & Tap (Ages 3 - 5)

Students will work on flexibility and learn foundational ballet skills and positions in the first half of this fun, engaging class. In the second half, we'll kick it up with tap! Students will work on ballet and tap routines. All students will need a leotard, tights, ballet shoes and tap shoes.
