Community Partners Greater High Point Food Alliance Special thanks to the Greater High Point Food Alliance for the grants to two of our community partners that will allow us to work together to develop and expand several important programs. A collaborative partnership between Morehead Recreation Center and St. Stephen Metropolitan AME Zion Church to build a new Community Garden at Morehead was awarded $4,000. This partnership will provide culinary and nutrition classes for underprivileged youth in the East Central core city area and the new community garden will offer 20 plots to grow healthy produce. Gardeners will donate 10 percent of their harvest to local food banks, food kitchens, churches and shelters from this location.

A second $4,000 grant for the expansion of Oakview Recreation Center’s Community Garden was also awarded by the Greater High Point Food Alliance. Oakview is partnering with Home Grown Heroes and Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Troop 42 to add 18 new garden plots to the existing garden. Home Grown Heroes will provide Junior Chef and STEM programming; Troop 42’s vision is to start a learning garden for Eagle Scouts to become active participants in the community and promote healthy eating habits.

Gardeners will donate 10 percent of their harvest to local food banks, food kitchens, churches and shelters in need of fresh produce from the Oakview location as well.

Southwest Renewal Foundation

We love our community partnerships! Special thanks to our friends at the Southwest Renewal Foundation for planting five lovely flowering Dogwood and Redbud trees along the Southwest Heritage Greenway on National Arbor Day. They will be enjoyed for generations to come at the Botanical Woodland Teaching Garden, across from Southside Recreation Center (401 Taylor Ave., High Point).

Department Happenings Welcome, Alex Shepherd!

High Point Parks & Recreation welcomes Alex Shepherd, our new financial specialist! Alex grew up in Kernersville and graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in finance. After working with the State Employees Credit Union, Alex decided to make the change to working for local government and is excited that this new opportunity allows him to combine his financial experience with his interest in sports and recreation. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in public administration and enjoys playing golf and watching sports in his free time. We are glad to have you on our team, Alex!

Teach A Kid To Fish 2021

High Point Parks and Recreation’s annual “Teach A Kid To Fish” event is always a big hit! Participants learned about boating safety, types of fish, how to bait hooks and tie knots, casting techniques and the importance of conservation.

Tahjier Sayer won the trophy for the most fish caught in the 5 - 7 age group with a total of one fish and one turtle. K.J. Williamson caught the biggest fish of the 5 - 7 age group with a 6.5” bluegill. Brooks Hewitt caught the biggest fish of the 8 - 11 age group, also with a 6.5” bluegill. Big thanks to Get Outdoors, NC Wildlife Commission, Piedmont Environmental Center, Matt Morgan Bait Company, GASP, Food Lion, Harris Teeter and all the volunteers who helped make a rainy morning so much fun for these junior anglers!

Oakview Recreation Summer Camp

2021 Law Enforcement Torch Run Special thanks to High Point Police Department for participating in the 2021 Law Enforcement Torch Run! More than 85,000 law enforcement officers carried the Flame of Hope across 35 nations, including this wonderful group on High Point’s Main Street, to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. SmartRec by Amilia will provide a customer-friendly online experience for you to explore, discover and register for your favorite programs or reserve your favorite outdoor spaces. As we make our transition to this new application, more information will follow on how you can create your account and learn just how easy it is to register for your activities online.

Senior Games 2021 Senior Games is a year-round health and wellness program for persons age 50 and better, offering 65 athletic events and 35 art categories, including performing and literary arts, from which to choose.

The 2021 Senior Games was a modified version of the annual tradition, due to the pandemic, with most inperson events conducted outdoors. There were a few exceptions, such as swimming and bowling, and other events were conducted virtually. The time period of the games was extended to allow multiple days for larger events, keeping participation under the COVID guidelines.

What wasn’t different was the friendship, fun and fellowship that comes along with every Senior Games.

The same spirit of competition and camaraderie was enjoyed by 272 athletes over age 50 at 11 venues in our community. We are grateful to Jean Latucci, our 2021 Senior Games Ambassador, for her leadership and commitment, to the Senior Games Advisory Committee for leading us through this new situation and to all the sponsors who helped support the Games. Athletes, artists and all competitors, you have our admiration, and we extend our congratulations for a job well done! See you next year.

Blair Park provides something for every player, no matter their skill level. A favorite with local golfers and the host of many local championships, Blair Park is a modern 18-hole facility traversed by numerous creeks that come into play on over half of the 18 holes. Many notable golfers have visited this course, including the legendary Sam Snead!

Centennial St. Oak Hollow is one of the few Pete Dye-designed public golf courses in the country and was at one time ranked one of the Best Courses of the South by Top Links magazine, as well as one of America’s Top 75 by Golf Digest. Some of the characteristics of the design offered at Oak Hollow include small, undulating greens, railroad ties, peninsula greens, pot bunkers and an island tee.

Adults - Ages 18+ Basic Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) (Ages 15+) This introductory course provides one hour of learning the basics of paddleboarding with an experienced instructor, plus 30 minutes with the equipment to play and have fun on your own. Participants must be able to swim.

Saturday, September 18, noon - 1:30 p.m. $25 per person/day Yoga Paddleboarding (Ages 16+) Stand-up paddleboard yoga is a great way to combine the mindfulness, strength, flexibility and balance of yoga with the serene beauty of nature and being out on the water. Find your bliss while engaging in a physical and mental workout. This 75-minute combination of stand-up paddleboarding and yoga is the perfect balance of relaxation and exercise!

High Point City Lake Park Now through September 4 Thursdays, 6:30 - 8 p.m., Saturdays, 8:30 - 10 a.m. $18 with rental, $6 when you bring your own board Fundamentals of Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) (Ages 15+) This longer course provides instruction in the basics of standup paddleboarding, plus additional skills and safety knowledge that will give you the confidence to enjoy SUP on larger waters. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills during this session. Participants must know how to swim. This course is similar to the basics course but with more time on the water and more in-depth safety skills instruction.

September 18, 3 - 5 p.m. $25 per person/day HIGH Fitness (Ages 16+) HIGH Fitness brings aerobics back in a hip and unique way, with fun music from all decades and genres mashed up into a one-hour, total body workout. Free Dog Obedience Classes (Ages 16+) Qualified instructors will teach owners and dogs basic commands and socialization skills. Dogs must be at least eight-weeks old. Participants must bring their pet's shot records, a six-foot, non-retractable leash, a choke collar and treats.

Oakview Recreation Center July 13 - December 28 Tuesdays, 7 - 8 p.m. $50 per session Stand-up Paddleboard Glowing Night Paddle (Ages 18+) Join us for the unique experience of stand-up paddleboarding after dark, as soft lighting on your board makes the water glow beneath your feet. We'll start out about an hour before sunset to get organized and comfortable on the boards, then explore beautiful Oak Hollow Lake as we watch the sun set. We'll paddle leisurely for about two hours, taking several breaks to chat and look to the skies for meteors during the expected meteor shower on August 13. Prior paddling experience is recommended.

Double Dutch Club (Ages 40+) Tone up, burn calories and relive some great childhood memories! If you're over age 40 and jumped Double Dutch when you were growing up (or even turned the rope!), come join our new High Point group and get in a fun, affordable workout.

Women's Intro to Kayaking and Safety on the Water (Ages 18+) Join us for a women’s introductory course on kayaking and water safety! This two-hour class, taught by an ACA-certified female instructor, will cover basic water safety and kayaking techniques. Lessons include choosing safety gear, the dangers of cold water, proper paddling and boat handling. Instruction will be conducted both on land and on the water in an encouraging environment.

Oak Hollow Marina Saturday, July 17, 10 a.m. - noon Sunday, August 15, 10 a.m. - noon $35 per person/day Intro to Kayaking (Ages 16+) Kayaking has become very popular, and yet many beginners are not well-versed in standard kayaking techniques or important safety procedures. This teaches the basics of flatwater kayaking.

Fees are per person/per day: $30 without a kayak $20 with your own kayak Adult Crafting Classes (Ages 18+) Crafting is a wonderful way to learn a new skill, tap into your creative side and reduce stress! In this series of classes, we're painting on canvas, creating a lip and body scrub, wood working, experimenting with tie-dye and more! Craft supplies are provided; grab a friend and join us! Pre-registration is required.

High Point City Lake Park Through December 31 Free Fall Leaf Tours Enjoy a long-standing High Point tradition on this annual guided tour, which takes park visitors around High Point City Lake on our excursion boat. During the 45-minute tour, participants learn about the seasonal changes and wildlife in and around the lake from Piedmont Environmental Center staff Naturalist Dick Thomas. Dick's entertaining and informative commentary, combined with amazing photographic opportunities, make this offering a seasonal favorite. Outdoor Activities Intro to Kayaking (ages 16+) Kayaking has become very popular, yet many beginners are not well-versed in standard kayaking techniques or important safety procedures. This course teaches the basics of flat-water kayaking on High Point's beautiful Oak Hollow Lake!

Stand-Up Paddleboard Glowing Night Paddle (ages 18+) Enjoy a unique experience of stand-up paddleboarding after dark, as soft lighting on your board makes the water glow beneath your feet. We'll start out about an hour before sunset to get organized and comfortable on the boards, then explore beautiful Oak Hollow Lake as we watch the sun set. We'll paddle leisurely for about two hours, taking several breaks to chat and look to the skies for meteors during the expected meteor shower on August 13. Prior paddling experience is recommended.

Trails & Greenways High Point Greenway The High Point Greenway is a 4.45-mile paved trail beginning at Armstrong Park (305 East Parkway Ave.) and ending at Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

Bicentennial Greenway The 6.2-mile High Point section of the Bicentennial Greenway begins at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road) and runs to Gallimore Dairy Road. The Greenway then travels through Greensboro, connecting to the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Natural Surface Trails High Point offers 6.6 miles of natural surface trails through hardwood and pine forests and lakeside habitats in the North and South Preserves at the Piedmont Environmental Center (1220 Penny Road).

West End Cross Country Course & Walking Trail A 1.5-mile natural surface walking trail is located at West End Park (1701 Edgewood Drive). This course can be reserved by groups for a cross country meet for $100 per meet. Please call 336.883.3480 to check availability.
