Kacy Woody Highlighted in International Newsletter Congratulations to Kacy Woody on being highlighted in this year’s 2024 International Ticketing Association weekly newsletter by the INTIX Women in Ticketing program.

She serves as the box office manager for High Point Theatre and has been there for 25 years.

Kacy was bitten by the proverbial “theatre bug” early in her life and has never recovered. She describes herself as “one of those rare birds who went to school for theatre and has had a job in the theatre ever since.”

Comp Plan Draft Unveiled An overview of the High Point 2045 Comprehensive Plan was presented at a public meeting on Feb. 20 at Congdon Yards. The event featured a presentation outlining the process and was followed by a reception during which attendees were able to ask questions of staff.

The plan is a long-range decision-making guide that establishes the general direction for policymaking and public investment for the next 20 years or more.

The event was also streamed online, allowing those who could not be there in person to watch the presentation live.

A public review draft is available on the project website at highpoint2045.org, where the public can review it and provide feedback. A recording of the unveiling presentation is also available on the website.

City staff are also holding office hours so that the public can drop in and learn more about the Comprehensive Plan and ask questions. The office hours will be held over several weeks at different locations and times to give everyone the opportunity to attend. For more information, visit highpoint2045.org.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS HISTORIAN GLENN CHAVIS

The High Point Historical Society Monthly Program Series took place Feb. 21 at the High Point Museum and featured High Point Historian Glen Chavis’ presentation, " My High Point in Black and White with a Dash of Color.”

Chavis discussed his latest book, which is a collection of the first 100 of 300 articles he wrote for the “News & Record” about his hometown of High Point, N.C., and its African-American history.

These articles cover a wide range of topics, from fashion to food to city ordinances.

Chavis was born and raised in High Point and attended Leonard Street School, A.J. Griffin School and William Penn High School.

He worked for Abbott Laboratories for over 30 years, and since his retirement in 2000, he has dedicated himself to research and publication of High Point’s African-American history.

He has authored the City of High Point’s “African-American Heritage Guide” and “Our Roots, Our Branches, Our Fruit: High Point’s Black History, 1859-1960.”

“My mission is to find, document and make known the history and contributions of High Point’s African-American community that has long been overlooked,” said Chavis.

Rogers Achieves National Designation Fleet Services Director Kevin Rogers has earned his designation as a Certified Public Fleet Professional by the American Public Works Association. He worked very hard for this and is one of only three professionals designated as such in the entire state of North Carolina.

City Celebrates Print Shop Opening The Marketing Division of the Communications & Public Engagement Department and Ricoh hosted a Valentine’s Day open house to celebrate the opening of the City’s new print shop. The City has partnered with Ricoh to provide printing and mail services.

The new print shop can help with anything from banners, signage, car decals, business cards and more. Jimmy Bayne Jr. Named Top 50 Kids Coach by U.S. Kids Golf High Point Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce that Director of Golf Jimmy Bayne Jr. has been honored as a Top 50 Kids Coach by U.S. Kids Golf, the world’s leading organization in developing the skills of young golfers.

This award recognizes youth coaches “who have excelled in developing players, fostering a positive environment and using the best resources to help advance their students.” Candidates are evaluated by a U.S. Kids Golf committee on their innovation, creativity, 13

organization, parental engagement and ability to instill a passion for the game in young golfers. Bayne accepted his award at a special presentation at the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, in late January.

Bayne, who succeeded Steve High as High Point Parks & Recreation Director of Golf in 2023, grew up in High Point, about a mile from Oak Hollow Golf Course. As a child and young man, he spent countless hours at both Blair Park and Oak Hollow golf courses in the company of his father, Jimmy Bayne Sr., who worked there. As a former junior player himself, he knows first-hand the impact the game has on youth.

“I’m extremely honored by this award,” said Bayne. “I’ve grown up on these beautiful courses and with this game. Many players have mentored me over the years. As a young man, they taught me patience, respect, kindness and the etiquette of the game. It’s my honor to carry that forward and especially to do it here on my home courses.”

“Jimmy is a top-notch professional, and he works well with all our customers, but he really connects with our junior players,” said High Point Parks & Recreation Director Lee Tillery. “As a former youth player who grew up in the game, he understands how to teach and motivate. He’s an outstanding coach, and his love for the game inspires our young golfers.

He’s truly earned this recognition, and we are very proud to share the news of this award.”

Special Olympics Athletes Win Big at Winter Games Please join the Parks & Recreation Department in congratulating the Special Olympics Guilford/High Point Athletes on a successful trip to the Southeast Winter Games in Boone last week.

They came home with one gold medal, three silver medals, one bronze medal and three fourth-place ribbons in the ski competition.

Local Teams Volunteer to Help Special Olympics High Point Parks & Recreation loves its community partnerships! Special thanks to the boys' and girls' basketball teams from Wesleyan Christian Academy and Woodbridge Cares, who volunteered for the Guilford/High Point Special Olympics basketball competition for Guilford County Schools on Feb. 15 and 16, serving over 150 athletes.

Seniors Celebrate Valentine’s Day High Point Parks & Recreation hosted a Sneaker Ball for Valentine’s Day at the Culler Senior Center. This event was a great chance for adults, age 50 or better, to wear their sneakers and get in a good workout on the dance floor with music by the Boogie Nights DJ. Attendees enjoyed refreshments with friends, plus a little Electric Slide and, of course, the Cupid Shuffle. Special thanks to co-sponsor Devoted Health Plans.

Open to all adults “age 50 and better,” Senior Games offers a variety of athletic and arts-based competitions. All-Star Cheer Teams Win Greensboro Competition Congratulations to High Point Parks & Recreation's All-Star Cheer team, who brought home top honors from "The Climb" All-Day Cheer Competition in Greensboro.

The Junior Team (ages 9 - 13) took first place in their age division, and the Senior Team (ages 14 - 18) took first place in their age division and the Grand Championship flag as well! These athletes train and practice hard, and High Point Parks & Recreation is very proud of them.

Father-Daughter Sneaker Ball is a Hit

High Point Parks & Recreation hosted the Father-Daughter Sneaker Ball on Feb. 17 for girls ages 5 – 17 and their fathers.

Attendees dressed in their semi-formal best with sneakers and enjoyed a special night of food, music, dancing and games as they made memories and celebrated Valentine's Day. Prizes were given to the best-dressed father and daughter duo and "Sneaker Queen" of the night.
