STATEWIDEDRIVING ROADEOINCHEROKEE

On Saturday, April 26, two High Point Transit System employees participated in the 2025 North Carolina Public Transportation Association's Transit Operator Driving Roadeo in Cherokee, North Carolina. Brenda Bolton, a Paratransit Operator with the City for fifteen years, participated in the 22-foot Light Transit Vehicle competition. Glenese Moore, a Fixed Route Operator with the City for nine years, joined in the 35-foot Transit Bus competition. They competed against 90 other transit operators from across the state.

The annual NCPTA Roadeo is designed to be a competitive test and measure of an LTV or Transit Bus Operator's skill behind the wheel, knowledge of safe driving practices, and familiarity with the vehicles and equipment used in the daily operation of public transportation.

The operators maneuver a car through a timed course constructed of specific obstacles simulating everyday situations they may encounter in a regular transit service environment. The operators will also be scored on safety habits and smoothness of operation during the driving test.

At the competition's end was an awards dinner and celebration. Awards included a first through fifth-place individual finish in each of the two (2) vehicle categories. In addition to the trophy awards, the individual finishers in each of the two (2) vehicle categories received cash prizes of $500, $250, $100, $50, and $25, respectively!

Congratulations to Brenda who took a PODIUM position and finished 2nd place for the entire State of North Carolina!!

The Greatest American Cleanup was held on Saturday, April 5. 342 people volunteered, removing approximately 5,700 pounds of trash, debris, and tires from roadways, waterways, school campuses, and the Greenway. Volunteers also donated over 275 nonperishable food items to be given to a local food pantry.

Many thanks to Blue Ridge Companies for providing the Visa gift cards!

THE ROTARY CLUB OF HIGH POINT SENSORY GARDEN IS NOW OPEN!

On Wednesday, April 16, the Rotary Club of High Point Sensory Garden was officially opened to the public at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the High Point Public Library.

The ceremony included remarks by library staff, Rotary Club of High Point President Slade Lewis, and Library Foundation Chair Wil Elder. After the ribbon-cutting, the garden was opened for the attendees to visit, and we estimate that about 150 visitors attended. The Rotary Club of High Point selected the garden in 2020 as its centennial project as a gift to the community.

The club’s initial generous commitment spurred a tremendous fundraising campaign within the community. The High Point Library Foundation Board, which conducted most fundraising efforts, strongly supported this project.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF HIGH POINT SENSORY GARDEN IS NOW OPEN!

The Sensory Garden will have the following regular opening hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The High Point Public Library is excited to open this sensory garden as a place that will benefit the individuals in our community living with autism, mental health struggles, dementia, and other challenges related to neurodevelopment.

If you have questions about the sensory garden, please contact Mary Sizemore

PARKRANGERM.MILOROHONOREDWITH DIVISIONALCOMMENDATIONBYHIGHPOINT POLICEDEPARTMENT

Please help us congratulate and thank High Point Park Ranger M. Miloro (left), who recently received a divisional commendation from the High Point Police Department. (shown with Major R. Juren, right, HPPD)

Ranger Miloro was awarded the commendation for his work with the "Angels in Blue" program, which helps make Christmas a little brighter for selected local families experiencing financial constraints during the holidays.

Ranger Miloro not only volunteered his time with Angels in Blue but also found additional sponsors and donors who contributed to this great program so it could serve more people in need.

We thank Ranger M. Miloro for his dedication to making our parks a safer place for everyone to enjoy and for his compassion and generosity in always wanting to help those in need in our community. We are lucky to have him as part of our team! We are also very appreciative of the ongoing support and partnership with our police department and High Point 911, and the many ways we work together every day.
