1919 MODEL TT – HOMECOMING

In 1919, Healdsburg, CA, acquired its first motorized fire engine, a Model TT/American LaFrance "Type E." This engine served the community until the 1930s, later becoming a reserve and "muster truck."

By the mid-1990s, restoration attempts failed due to severe mechanical and body issues, leaving the engine in disrepair. In 2009, Wes Mello, a Retired Fire Chief, purchased the fire engine and embarked on a meticulous restoration.

Chief Mello replicated the deteriorated wood body, rebuilt the motor, and resolved transmission safety issues. He restored the solid rubber tires and hickory spokes. Using historical photos, Mello ensured the fire engine's appearance matched its original 1919 configuration.

After investing thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours, Chief Mello completed the remarkable restoration in 2014 The beautifully restored engine has been generously donated back to the City by Wes and Jean Mello. We look forward to showcasing this incredible engine at the upcoming Council meeting, and Mr. Mello and the engine will lead this year’s FFA Twilight Parade.
