XXXIII Olympiad, hon y p g Roper. Please join us in recognizing our incredible summer athletes for their remarkable achievements in previous Olympic Games!

Hanna Scramaglia represented Sweden at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, showcasing exceptional skill and determination in the 100meter breaststroke and the 4x100 meter medley relay.

Following her Olympic journey, Hanna continued to excel in swimming while pursuing her academic goals at the University of California, Berkeley where she earned the honor of being a threetime All-American.

Beyond the water, Hanna's inspiring story embodies the true spirit of an athlete – hardworking, determined, and a dedicated community member, serving as an inspiring role model to all.

Gail Roper represented the United States at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where she competed in the 200-meter breaststroke. Holding an astonishing 42 Masters World Records and 166 Masters U.S. Records, Roper's dedication and skill in the pool are unparalleled.

Recognized as one of the most exceptional collegiate athletes of her time, she was a dual nominee for the prestigious Sullivan Award in 1952 and 1953. Described by Sports Illustrated as "the most dominant swimmer ever," Roper's legacy is cemented with her induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1997.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY back to school safety tips

Back to school safety is crucial for a worry-free school year. Ensuring students arrive at school and return home safely is a top priority. Let's work together to create a safe and supportive environment for all students.

Obey School Zones: Respect school zone speed limits and be prepared to stop for children crossing the road Follow all posted signs and signals

Watch for Buses: Be cautious around school buses Stop when their red lights are flashing, and wait until they start moving again before proceeding.

Stay Alert: Pay extra attention in residential areas and near schools, anticipating children darting out unexpectedly.

No Passing: Do not pass other vehicles in school zones, crosswalks, or areas with high pedestrian activity. Maintain a safe following distance.

Avoid Distractions: Put away your phone and other distractions while driving. Keeping your full attention on the road is vital, especially near schools.

Respect Crossing Guards: Follow the instructions of crossing guards. They are there to ensure the safety of children crossing the street.

Use Turn Signals: Signal your turns well in advance to alert pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers of your intentions

Yield to Pedestrians: Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at crosswalks, even if you have the right of way.

Be Patient: Be patient and courteous around school buses and in busy school zones. Aggressive driving can create hazards.

Anticipate Traffic: Plan for increased traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times. Leave earlier to avoid rushing and potential congestion.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

On August 6, 2024, the Healdsburg Police Department proudly participated in National Night Out, an annual event dedicated to enhancing community-police relationships and fostering neighborhood camaraderie.

This year's event was a tremendous success, bringing together the Healdsburg community and its dedicated Police Officers and Police Dispatchers. In collaboration with “Tuesdays in the Plaza”, we transformed the evening into a vibrant celebration filled with fun festivities and treats!

Our department offered attendees complimentary popcorn, while the generous support of “Vamos!” made free hot dogs available to all. The Healdsburg Police Officers’ Association also contributed to the event by offering free school supplies and a delectable assortment of treats from local favorites like Crumble Cookies, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and Lola's Market.

Children were captivated by the colorful face painting, adding a joyful touch to the evening. And the highlight of the night undoubtedly belonged to our fearless Police Chief, Matt Jenkins, who bravely faced the dunk tank. It was a fun way to engage with the crowd and share some laughs.

We are grateful for the community’s support, which made National Night Out 2024 a memorable and successful event.

IMPLICIT BIAS AWARENESS

training for city staff and residents

Over the past week, the City of Healdsburg partnered with the National Training Institute on Race and Equity (NTIRE) to deliver implicit bias training to all City staff and several community partners. Led by Dr. Bryant Marks, the interactive session not only provided a deeper understanding of unconscious biases, but also tools to increase awareness and mitigate their impact. The training reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within the workplace and the community we serve.
