We want to know how you see the City of Golden putting those values into practice, and how we can do better to reach our vision.

We welcomed our new Chief of Police, Joe Harvey, who told us about the strategic plan for crime reduction, traffic safety, community engagement, wellness, equitybased policing model, and their new Community Engagement Group.

We also discussed opportunities to make Golden even better, including noise mitigation, making our neighborhoods drought/fire proof by cleaning up yards and trees, challenges and opportunities with the unhoused in Golden, working with JeffCom on responses, and how to connect with our police department.

The State of Golden: Strong and Resilient

L

ast month I was able to fulfill one of my goals: bringing back the State of the City for Golden. I saw the value of coming together for the specific purpose of talking about the City and felt its absence was a loss for the community.

The Golden Chamber of Commerce hosted the event, and it was wonderful to see members of our business community, nonprofits, residents, and city officials and employees together.

Having never given a State of the City address before, I spent some time watching videos from prior Golden events as well as other cities. I tried to determine what I, as a viewer, found valuable or interesting and what was putting me to sleep. I don’t know if I struck the right balance, but the video is available online and you can let me know!

My remarks can be boiled down to a single statement, the State of the City of Golden is strong. We weathered the difficult years in 2020 and 2021 and continue to thrive. While navigating through multiple crises we delivered exceptional city services and were successful in supporting new projects and ideas to respond to the pandemic.

I stated that Golden is more than just those of us who live here. I say that in full acknowledgement that only those who live here can vote in city elections or will receive this Informer. I believe that the community of Golden is inclusive of businesses, residents, students, employees, nonprofits, outside groups and area residents who consider Golden their town. As Mayor my responsibility is to the city and being a careful steward of city resources. I also recognize that that community of Golden is vested in the decisions of the city and can be great partners in making a better Golden for all.

After reflecting on the past two years, I talked about our priorities for this year.

Council’s adopted 2022 Strategic Action Plan shows the work we have funded and actions we are completing in the city. This year’s version improves on the plan by connecting each action to a guiding document that was created with broad community input and adopted by prior councils. These include our housing and sustainability goals in the Comprehensive Plan; the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the Transportation Master Plan; and of course, Golden Vision 2030. I highlighted a few priorities and encouraged everyone to review it to understand where our time and money are being spent this year. The plan is available on the City Council page on the Golden website.

The State of the City is an opportunity to reflect on where we have been and where we are going, and to share in the successes and accomplishments of our City of Golden. I was happy to bring the event back this year and hope we continue to hold it many years into the future.

As Golden residents can attest, May and June signal the start of another busy summer season, especially along Clear Creek. The City of Golden’s Public Works Department is looking to you to help pick your favorite bulb as we level up our city streetlights to LED bulbs.

We’ll be launching a pilot project this spring and summer to test new LED bulbs along 44th Avenue—the stretch of road from New Terrain Brewing and Tony Grampsas Park that passes the Colorado Railroad Museum as it heads into downtown Golden.

The City has traditionally used high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, which tend to have an amber hue. LEDs can vary in color temperature, typically from warm white to cool/bluish white. LED bulbs offer many benefits —they save energy, they save money, and they help improve visibility.

The City of Golden has carefully selected several LED streetlights for consideration in this study. The selected LEDs will mimic the warm glow of HPS lights more closely while retaining the visibility benefits of LED streetlights.

If you’re travelling along 44th Avenue in May and June, keep an eye out for the new LED lights! Stay tuned to the City’s social media pages for ways to share your feedback on the best ways that we can light up Golden.

Golden Firefighters Honored

he Golden Fire Department got together this spring to recognize career and volunteer staff for their many accomplishments performed in the line of duty. Chief Jerry Stricker celebrated each and every Golden firefighter for their expertise and professionalism, recognizing that many who serve do so as volunteers. The Golden Fire Department hopes to reconvene its awards banquet dinner next year, and is looking forward to connecting with the community at its Pancake Breakfast in Summer 2022.

2021 FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR Engineer Brandon Dobson

2021Jack Harvey Award

The Jack Harvey award was created to honor a GFD member for their outstanding contribution to firefighters at a local, state and national level. The award winner this year, nominated by his peers, is Engineer Rocco Snart.

Award of Honor

Lieutenant Jason Mulari received the Award of Honor for his passion and commitment as the Golden Fire EMS Coordinator, guiding personnel through the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic as well as his continued support of EMS training. Mulari’s work extends to the continued onboarding, training, and integrating our newest EMS transport partner Stadium Medical.

Nominated by his peers, Engineer Brandon Dobson was recognized as Firefighter of the Year for 2021. This recognition is for his outstanding performance and knowledge in developing the Probationary Firefighter Task Book training program. In addition, Dobson received the Training Division Appreciation Award. He played a lead role in the active shooter trainings and developed the “Go-Bags” for that program. Chief Jerry Stricker recognized Dobson as a “role model of professional development,” obtaining the State Hazmat Technician, State Driver Operator (Pumper), Fire Instructor 1, Acting Company Officer and an EKG course certifications.

Award of Honor

Engineer JJ Risch received the 2021 Award of Honor for her dedication to behind-the-scenes work. Risch is constantly improving rescue operations, supporting community outreach and city special events. Lastly, Risch takes on the often thankless job of providing station drinks, kitchen supplies and other related items as needed.

Award of Merit

Firefighter Brittnie Weiler received the 2021 Award of Merit for her commitment to the Golden Fire Department by volunteering nearly 2000 hours in support of our customer service goals and mission. In 2021, Weiler completed 148 shifts where her skills and abilities on many significant incidents were demonstrated.

Joe Harvey Sworn In as Chief of the Golden Police Department

n Wednesday, March 16, the Golden Police Department swore in Joe Harvey as its next Chief of Police as members of the Golden command staff, members of the officers’ families and city officials looked on.

Chief Harvey has more than 34 years of experience in law enforcement. He joined the Golden Police Department in 2015 and has served as Deputy Chief since 2018.

“The City of Golden is in good hands with Chief Joe Harvey as the next leader of the Golden Police Department,” said Laura Weinberg, Mayor of Golden. “We are grateful for his years of service to the people of Golden already and look forward to his service to the community for years to come.”

Harvey is the first new Chief of Police in Golden in twenty years, as Chief Bill Kilpatrick recently announced his retirement after leading the Golden Police Department since 2002.

“I’ve been honored to serve alongside Joe Harvey, and he’s earned the trust of our department, our City Council, and other city leaders. Chief Harvey will carry forward the progress of the Golden Police Department with a steady hand and a clear vision,” said Retiring Chief of Police Bill Kilpatrick.

The Little Theater with the Big Pictures: The Gem

M

any Golden residents who grew up in town between the 1940s and 1960s get nostalgic about the city’s last real movie theater.

Over the years it went by different names—the Gem, the Golden Gem, and finally the Golden Theater— before it closed forever in 1975. First established in 1908 in what was then the old Christian Church building in north Golden, it changed locations and ownership a few times before finding a permanent home at 1301 Washington Avenue.

Golden’s movie house was built in 1911–1912 as a dual-use facility, housing the Gem Theatre on the first floor and the Golden Athletic Club on the second. The theater opened on June 1, 1912, with about 300 seats.

The building remains today, but instead of movies and popcorn, it’s home to restaurants and offices.

Over the years, the movie palace went through at least three major remodels before it fell on hard times in the late 1960s. It temporarily closed in 1970, but then the Foss family bought it and brought back family fare in 1972.

After a major remodel in 1976, the old theater was converted into retail space and reopened as Steve’s Corner, a local western-wear store.

Compostable is always Biodegradable, but Biodegradable isn’t always Compostable

ith the recent addition of organics collection to Golden’s Pay-As-You-Throw waste collection program, now offered to nearly all residents, understanding what is acceptable or not acceptable in the compost stream is more important than ever. Many products that appear to be compostable require a second look to make sure they’re acceptable in Golden’s collection efforts. Compostable and biodegradable describe organic waste that can be recycled using biological processes involving heat, humidity, and microorganisms. While the two materials utilize the same naturally occurring processes, that is where the similarities end.

Compostable is an industry standard term to describe an item that will decompose into natural elements at a rate consistent with similar organic materials.

Biodegradable is a broader, unregulated term to describe an item that can, at any rate, disintegrate in the same composting environment. However, there is no certification or requirement that these materials breakdown into natural elements or that they do so entirely.

When looking for compostable goods, be cautious of misleading “biodegradable” branding unless it has a BPI logo. Look for the standards and certifications of compostability or “Meets ASTM D6400 standard.” A complete list of approved products for Golden’s organics collection service can be found at www.compostmanufacturingalliance.com.

Golden Fire Department How to Safely Enjoy an Outdoor Fire This Spring

n the springtime, Golden Fire-Rescue is frequently asked about outdoor burning regulations as the days are getting longer but the nights are still brisk. Burning outdoors, per the adopted and amended fire code in Golden, has different levels of applicable code requirements. Enjoy your fire while being a good neighbor by knowing the right requirements and safety tips:

Recreational Fires:

Portable Outdoor Fireplaces:

• If you are planning a permanent campfire-style, wood-burning fire ring using rocks or bricks or something similar, then that is a “recreational fire.”

• Portable outdoor fireplaces burn solid fuel other than rubbish with a pile size limited to that of a recreational fire (3 feet diameter by 2 feet high), and are constructed of steel, concrete, clay or other non-combustible material, and are either open in design, or are equipped with a hearth opening or short chimney (the typical fire pots or chimineas sold commercially).

• No permit is required but adopted fire code requirements apply.

• The pile of wood for an outdoor fire pit in-ground, recreational fire should be no more than 3-ft long by 3-ft wide by 2-ft tall.

• Do not burn trash or rubbish, including sawed lumber, which releases toxic fumes into the air that are harmful to your health and that of your neighbors.

• A recreational fire must be at least 25 feet away from any combustibles, e.g., your house, the neighbor’s house, bushes, trees, fencing, deck railings, etc.

Even if you put a grate over your open fire pit to use it as a grill, you should still follow guidelines from the fire department in regards to recreational fires.

• The fire must be constantly attended by a competent adult in control of the property until extinguished.

(Adult should not be under the influence to the point they would likely not be able to drive.

Seek police determination if needed).

• Attendant must have a readily accessible means to extinguish the fire such as a minimum of one 4A rated portable extinguisher, a charged garden hose, a 5-gallon bucket of water, or a 5-gallon bucket of dirt or sand and shovel.

Morning StArt is a joint one-hour coffee meetup program sponsored by the FAC and the Golden Public Art Commission (PAC) to bring artists in the area together with the Golden community to meet and talk about art. Come grab a cup of coffee with May’s featured artist, Melody Huisjen, the owner/artist of Hideaway Art & Craft in Golden.

Her love of miniatures led her to create lighted, hand-painted and assembled shadow boxes. Currently, she is recognized for her paintings with watermedia, acrylic, pastel and ink.
