There you can find annual and quarterly financial reports, annual budgets, monthly sales tax reports, and relevant trends and policies. Neighborhood Grants Deadline This is your last chance to apply for a grant for neighborhood parties or improvements! Funds are available to residents for first-time neighborhood parties and improvement projects. The City will reimburse the costs up to $250 for a block party. There are some guidelines, such as all purchases must be made within city limits, and alcoholic beverages are excluded.

If you’re more interested in making neighborhood improvements, then you can apply for a Neighborhood Betterment Grant. If approved, the City will reimburse up to $750. Visit www.cityofgolden.net/NeighborhoodGrants for details. All grant requests are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 22. Rotary Peach Sale It’s that time of year for the Golden Rotary Club’s 28th Annual Peach Sale.

Everybody Loves Golden

urs is the town everybody loves – people who live in Golden, people who work in Golden, and people who visit Golden.

One illustration comes from a recent visit of young African leaders selected by the State Department’s prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program. After a walking tour along Clear Creek, with stops at city facilities, our guests announced that Golden was their favorite American town.

Nevertheless, locals sometimes feel mixed emotions about their city. During the summer, sunny skies and long days draw us out of our homes and into our public spaces. For the most energetic among us, rigorous climbing, hiking, and biking opportunities abound. Others can tube, kayak, and splash along the Clear Creek Corridor; golf at world-class Fossil Trace Golf Club; or enjoy Splash Water Park. Slower-paced options also beckon: strolling; shopping; attending events, dining; museum-going; and relaxing in parks with family, friends, and neighbors.

Visitors delight in Golden’s offerings, too — so many visitors that residents can become disenchanted. This summer our innovative staff will work on the challenges posed by the popularity of the creek. Staff intends to conduct a pilot project using “smart city” approaches, used to enhance a city’s assets through sophisticated information and communication technologies. With regard to the creek, it is hoped that smart city data analysis can lead to more predictable and pleasurable experiences.

While awaiting results of the pilot program, we will continue to greet the day-trippers and tourists as they create warm family memories. Most join us in following the “Golden Rules” of civil behavior, supporting local businesses, and contributing to our revenue stream. Like us, they genuinely appreciate Golden.

Golden’s heartthrob status, coupled with the success of the entire Denver metropolitan region, has led to another complication in residents’ relationship with our town. Whether or not we are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads, we face increased demand for housing at all points of the economic spectrum.

The pressure for housing isn’t coming from just those wanting to move here. Our present neighbors have changing needs: seniors who wish to downsize to a more manageable place; young adults who grew up here and may now serve you at a store, coffeehouse, or restaurant; Mines students who have job offers and a desire to settle down in Golden; or a young couple renting a small apartment who have saved to buy a home for their expanding family. We want to make it possible for people to start here and stay here.

We all agree that Golden should remain a lovable small town in a compact and beautiful foothills setting. We also cherish its inclusive character, welcoming individuals regardless of national origin, race, economic circumstances, ethnic heritage, gender or gender identity, educational status, age, abilities, religious beliefs, or length of residency. What we haven’t worked through, however, is how to preserve our small-town culture — without losing the soul of our diverse community.

Together we need to balance these values, acknowledging that our affections may fray during the process. No single solution will be ideal for all and for all time. Throughout its history, the good people of Golden have confronted difficult problems with grace, collegiality, and wisdom. As long as we respect each other, our community can continue to safeguard the Golden we love, even as its technical blueprint changes and new people put down roots.

Golden Park Rangers – Ambassadors and Enforcers

he Golden Park Rangers are back for their fifth summer season in Golden. The mission of the park ranger program is to provide ambassadors to the parks and trails along Clear Creek, and to help residents and visitors feel welcome and safe.

You will see the park rangers walking the parks and trails along the Clear Creek corridor to answer questions, give directions, and help visitors understand the park rules. The rangers received training in several specialties including the history of Golden along Clear Creek, providing directions to help visitors find local attractions, first aid and park regulations. Illegal Exhaust Enforcement

ith the warmer weather comes an increase in visitors to the city who enjoy riding motorcycles and vehicles with modified exhaust systems. Along with the increase in visitors comes the increase in complaints from neighborhoods that are directly impacted by the noise these vehicles make. The Golden Police Department Traffic Unit wants to take a moment to remind everyone that the enforcement of vehicles with illegal exhaust systems is one of the top priorities for the department.

An illegal exhaust is defined by the Colorado Revised Statutes 42-4-225 as a modification to the “exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner, which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle…” In short, any muffler that emits noise louder than the stock muffler is considered illegal. Golden Police look for EPA approval stamps, which can typically be seen embedded on legal mufflers. Motorists with mufflers that sound too loud and are proven to be illegal, will be at risk of a traffic citation. Fines range from $200 to $400.

Golden officers ask visitors driving vehicles with modified exhaust systems to be respectful of those who live in town by driving in a quiet manner, or by altering their route to drive downhill when going through town whenever possible.

ach year the Rotary Club of Golden honors local businesses and organizations who go above and beyond to demonstrate ethical standards and practices with their Ethics in Business Awards. This year the contributions of the nominees range from sustainability efforts to giving back to the community in exceptional ways.

To assist in the definition of criteria for judging candidates for the awards, and to select the winners, Golden Rotary calls upon Sandy Woodson of the faculty of the Colorado School of Mines. She, in turn, enlists the participation of students in her Ethics class in judging nominations for the Ethics in Business Awards.

There is one for-profit and one not-for-profit winner. This year’s not-forprofit winner is Buffalo Bill Days, Inc. Here is what the student judges had to say: Buffalo Bill Days is extremely successful. They are fiscally responsible by spending their money only for necessary expenses and donate the remainder. Impressively the Buffalo Bill Days event is 100% volunteer-run.

It is a model of cooperation with several organizations. They also support students by offering local scholarships. Even though there is opportunity to make this more commercial, the committee running the Buffalo Bill Days event doesn’t “sell out” to larger corporations for money.

The for-profit winner is Woody’s Pizza, with these remarks from the judges: Woody’s Pizza makes donations to community programs and is environmentally concerned with their waste diversion program, food composting program, highway trash pickups, and energy reduction systems.

They also care for employees with their “invest in our employees” program.

They have a strong belief that happy employees make happy customers.

The ethical practices they endorse are not purely just “good business.” The company sets the expectation of giving back, with numerous stated ways they help their community - this business goes above and beyond.

CONSTRUCTION ZONE SAFETY

ome say there are two seasons in Colorado… winter and construction. The warm weather means it’s construction season and as a result, there are more hazards on the roads. According to CDOT, about 600 people die and more than 37,000 people are injured every year in work zone crashes nationwide. Here are some common sense reminders about staying safe and keeping others safe when driving in a work safety zone.

• Slow Down! Slow down when approaching a work zone, watch for workers and oncoming traffic in your lane ahead, obey reduced speed limits.

• Be Aware! Familiar traffic patterns may be altered. Pay attention to the changing road conditions and follow directions as you navigate the work zone.

• Pay Attention! Obey cones and follow the flagger’s directions. Be patient as they direct you.

• Night Time Alertness. Watch for pedestrians and oncoming traffic that may also be navigating through the work zone in the dark.

• Be patient. Remember that the delay you are experiencing today will result in a more beautiful and efficient drive tomorrow.

The Lions Club 4th of July Festival in Lions Park

T

he annual Lions Club Fourth of July celebration in Lions Park is scheduled for, you guessed it, July 4th! Enjoy the day in the park, listening to the great line up of live music provided by the Lions Club. If you don’t want to pack your own picnic, food will be available for purchase from the American Legion who will be cooking up hot dogs, brats and other items. This year gluten free and vegetarian options will be available from two food trucks that will be on site for the event.

Quench your thirst while you are waiting for the fireworks with beer for purchase, provided by Miller Coors and the Golden City Brewery. Remember that outside alcohol is not allowed in the park, or along the creek.

Don’t forget to get your raffle tickets for the many great prizes donated by generous community partners and merchants to the Lions Club. All the proceeds go to fund the many projects the Lions Club does for the community.

Planting the Seed of Sustainability

O

n Arbor Day back in April, several students from Bell Middle School assisted Golden’s Forestry Department in planting trees at Ulysses Park, which is located near the school. They braved rainy and cold weather to plant the first of 24 trees in the area. It was a great lesson for the students in what it takes to build a healthy tree canopy in their community, and they will be able to benefit from the much-needed shade the trees will provide at the Ulysses Skate Park.

Since Arbor Day, the Forestry Department planted an additional 50 trees throughout Golden. The massive planting was made possible by a $6,000 grant from the Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC).

Environmental Discovery Camps for Kids Eagel’s Nest Owl’s Roost (ENOR) is an award-winning Jefferson County 4-H program that focuses on environmental education and youth development, rather than recreation. Science, math, history, drama, art and teamwork are woven into activities each day. Jefferson County partners with Colorado State University Extension for these camps. They are weeklong camps in June and July. Spots are still available for various camps.

he Golden Farmers Market opens for the 2018 season on June 2, offering fresh and seasonal produce, baked goods and other artisanal items for sale to the public. The market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 6. Please note that due to the Buffalo Bill Days parade, there will not be a market on Saturday, July 28.

The Golden Farmers Market is sponsored by the Golden Chamber of Commerce and operated by Colorado Fresh Markets. The market season this year includes some new vendors to Golden, including the exciting addition of Palizzi Farm, a family farm that has been growing in Brighton since 1929. Palizzi Farms sells fresh garden vegetables picked by hand, flower baskets, and quality bedding plants for your home garden.

Congratulations to the 2018 Sustainability Award Winners!

he City of Golden Sustainability Department is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sustainability Awards program with an inspiring set of leaders.

These four winners show how creativity, passion and determination can create healthier communities, keep waste out of the landfill, spread environmental awareness, and bring neighbors together. The Golden City Council recognized them at the April 12 City Council meeting.

One Business Award went to a partnership between MillerCoors, MolsonCoors, and Ball Corporation, for coordinating an annual cleanup of Clear Creek. Each October, in celebration of Great Water Month, more than 100 Coors employees come together and spend the day picking up trash from the Highway 6 bridge down to McIntyre Avenue.

Homegrown Goodness

here are two things that often prevent people from eating fresh, locally sourced, fruits and veggies: availability and affordability.

The GoFarm Local Food Share program works to break down those barriers in ways that help not only community members, but local farmers as well.

GoFarm was founded in 2014 with the vision of building a robust local food system that secures fair prices for farmers while supporting environmentally sustainable food.

Community members can sign up in advance for a season’s worth of fresh, locally grown food that comes from small-scale farmers who rely on GoFarm to bring their produce to market and share their farmer stories with consumers. The program provides 20 weeks of produce from June to October. There are two pickup locations in Golden and another in west Arvada. To support GoFarm’s efforts and eat delicious farm-fresh food this summer, sign up at www.gofarmcoop.org.

GoFarm also runs community access programs focused on teaching people the value of local food, as well as increasing food access and affordability for people who experience food insecurity. They accept SNAP payment, participate in Double Up Food Bucks, and work with the day cares, pre-schools, and Head Start programs to offer produce at more affordable prices.

Centura Health is now partnered with GoFarm, and hosts the shipping containers on two of their properties for produce distribution. With Centura’s support, GoFarm received a grant from the USDA in 2017 to expand the program each year.

Together they also created the Produce as Medicine program, where Centura staff screen patients for food insecurity, and if qualified, patients get a free voucher for a GoFarm food box.

The Golden History Museum is also teaming up with GoFarm for a Local Harvest Dinner Series! This is a one-of-a-kind, outdoor farm-to-table dinner that is entertaining, inspiring and educational. The Local Harvest dinners combine the two organizations’ shared values to create a sense of community within Golden and the surrounding area. Held at the scenic Golden History Park, the three dinners are prepared by

a restaurant partner and focus on different educational components such as local agriculture and seasonal eating, hunger and food access in our community, and ways to preserve your harvest.

All funds raised at the dinner series go to directly support educational initiatives for the Golden History Museum and GoFarm. The dinners will be held on the following Sundays: July 22, Aug. 26 and Sept. 23. Shelton Recognized as Champion for Healthy Schools

G

ongratulations to Shelton Elementary School, one of 47 schools in Colorado named a 2018 Healthy School Champion for its efforts in creating and supporting a healthy school environment as well as successfully implementing effective school health efforts that support student learning.

Just a few examples of Shelton’s efforts include a new school and community garden, the launch of a mindfulness program called Brainwise, and a studentled health and wellness committee called the Health Heroes. “We started by asking our parents, teachers, and students what issues most concerned them, and then our Health Heroes got to work implementing programs to address those needs,” said Shelton Principal Karen Brown. “We are so proud of all that our school has accomplished and are very honored to be

recognized through this award. It takes all of us working together to accomplish this amazing feat.”

Healthy School Champions Recognition is presented by Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) and Colorado’s Healthy

Schools Successful Students, and sponsored by The Colorado Health Foundation. Shelton Elementary received a $500 Excellence Award. The program has given over 315 awards, granting more than $350,000 over the past eight years.

his summer, the Golden Backpack Program continues its tradition of bringing healthy lunches to kids. The Snack-N-Wagon will serve FREE lunches to kids 18 and under.
