ach month this year, Coffee with Councilors, hosted by Councilors J.J. Trout and Casey Brown, will center discussion around a value from the Golden Vision 2030 document, which can be found at www.cityofgolden.net/GV2030. We want to know how you see the City of Golden putting those values into practice, and how we can do better to reach our vision.

Parks & Recreation Director Rod Tarullo discussed the innovative program utilizing neighborhood volunteers to help weed instead of using chemicals. Anyone interested in joining the volunteer weed patrol can email goldenshealth@gmail.com. We also talked about what we love: • " I can hike up South Table and be alone in nature while I see the Denver skyline where I was just at a meeting last night.” • "I can bike to get coffee and donuts and all the way to this park for this meeting." • "Concerts in Golden." • "Can walk a block to a thriving and friendly downtown space." • "Dinosaur Ridge is right here in Golden." We also discussed opportunities to make Golden even better, including more organic parks, how to make Lookout Mountain safer for recreation, and more connected transit throughout Golden.

Volunteering: Among Our List of Ten Golden Values We value our sense of belonging and involvement in the community/volunteerism.
T
hat’s for sure! We all take pride in our city and value the effort that so many contribute to preserve its character in making Golden such a wonderful place to live. We see amazing volunteer participation in so many facets of our community. Volunteer opportunities abound to include, among many more, the Chamber’s Farmers Market, the History Museum, Foothills Art Center, Miners Alley Playhouse, Lions 4th of July, the Visitors Center, Stewards of Open Space, the Foothills Animal Shelter, Jeffco Library Foundation, the Railroad Museum, and the Neighborhood Rehab Project (aka with a smile – BeATool.org). The list and organizations go on and on. Wonderful. As one example, a Rotary team regularly performs South Golden Road Clean-Up. We wear bright chartreuse safety vests for protection but felt we needed to add a big Rotary logo on the back to fend off so many questions about court-ordered community service. Gees! Other groups do similar volunteer clean-up under the City’s Adopt-a-Street program. The City assists with safety vests and plenty of orange bags. Interested? You’ll be happy to know that there are still a few streets available . . . you or your group can contact Steve Kurtz in Public Works at 303-3848160 or by email at skurtz@cityofgolden.net . This past year the City created a volunteer website, which lists open volunteer opportunities: www.volunteergoldenco.org. There are several here and many more elsewhere. This website will be upgraded soon to add City volunteer options beyond the current list of non-profit opportunities. Community involvement in Golden also gets an assist from Leadership Golden, an annual program to acquaint class members with the fabric of Golden and with an underlying purpose to encourage future volunteer leaders for Golden. Elsewhere in this month’s Informer is a short article on the application process for the 2022-2023 Class. Take a look! Volunteering is certainly good for Golden and it is also good for you. Most opportunities are fun in working with others in a like-minded activity. You meet new people, make new friends and are very much appreciated for you contribution. Where else can you get all that? This volunteer contribution extends to the School of Mines, whose student volunteers pitch in regularly to make Golden a great place to live... and go to school. Thank you, Mines Yes, we Goldenites – all of us – very much seek to preserve Golden’s character and understand that Golden character is much more than our historic buildings – it’s us. We are the character of Golden as best seen by our strong support for the betterment of Golden through volunteering. Thank you, Golden.

Fourth of July in Golden
City of Golden administrative offices and the Golden Community Center will be closed all day on Monday, July 4 in honor of Independence Day. The Golden Lions Club is organizing and will be hosting the 4th of July community celebration in Lions Park again this year. Activities kick off at noon and include music provided by three bands starting at 11:30 a.m. The celebration is designed to be a day for families, friends, and neighbors to get together at the beautiful park on 10th Street to picnic or purchase food and drink. Please note that due to high fire danger this year, there will NOT be a fireworks display at the end of the evening.

Why did Supertramp Choose Golden? Keith and Kelsey Panich are both from the East Coast and would spend all of their vacation time coming out to Colorado to snowboard. After three years of coming out to visit, they decided to make the jump. They took the Coors brewery tour on one of their return trips to the airport and fell in love with Golden. They knew Golden was where they wanted to be when they moved out to Colorado. They packed up their

two vehicles and headed west. Seven years later and after a ton of mountain biking, hiking, and river adventures they plan to have Golden as their longterm home. They purchased a home in Golden and wanted to ensure their team could sneak out for lunch rides during the day. Golden is the perfect fit.
Supertramp Campers recently received an Advanced Industries Grant from the State of Colorado. How Sumpertramp plans to use the grant: This grant allows Supertramp to fundamentally change the industry by creating top-of-theline products that are reasonably priced to the mid-market through vacuum infusion (VI) with reusable vacuum bags here in Colorado. The industry standard is that campers are built using some combination of wood, aluminum, screws, and sometimes sandwich composite panels. These conventional materials do not withstand the challenging environments that truck campers are exposed to over many years. Over time the materials will rot or break down leading to a shorter lifespan of your investment. Supertramp's campers are built using a carbon fiber reinforced/epoxy composite. The company uses a process called vacuum infusion, which is usually reserved for the aerospace industry, to create the parts in-house. Supertramp's process is much cleaner than traditional wet lay-up and allows for us to create the highest strength-toweight ratio as desired for off-road vehicles.
Current Events in Clear Creek
or many years, Golden’s Clear Creek has been an attraction for anglers, tubers, kayakers and other recreational users. In recent years, the Creek has seen additional impacts to the health of aquatic life from higher water temperatures and lower than average stream flows. Golden recently commissioned a study to look at how these conditions affect the aquatic life living in the Creek, including brown trout, rainbow and brook trout, and several macroinvertebrate species such as mayflies, beetles and water mites. When higher temperatures are combined with lower seasonal flows and increased recreational use, fish and other species become stressed. Check out the study, which outlines several opportunities to manage recreational use of Clear Creek, on the City of Golden's website or on the Clear Creek Management Strategies page on Guiding Golden. Golden will continue to proactively monitor and manage the multitude of interests for both human and aquatic life to help maintain a sustainable ecosystem for the Clear Creek area.

Get to Know Visit Golden…
isit Golden is known as Golden’s tourism marketing entity, but it View Visit Golden’s actively works to attract both locals and tourists alike to Golden’s local businesses. The mission of this small but mighty staff of 2021 Annual Report at one full-time and two part-time employees, plus seasonal greeters, is to www.visitgolden.com/about-us/ promote Golden as a tourism and small convention/meeting destination, primarily in the non-summer months, in order to sustain Golden’s business community throughout the year. Visit Golden’s marketing campaigns are funded by money raised by the Golden merchants themselves through what is called a “vendor’s fee” which business owners pay throughout the year. The only financial contribution from the City consists of the salaries of the small team of staff members Most of Visit Golden’s marketing efforts are geared toward the slower fall, winter and spring seasons. No paid ads are run during summer when visitation is already high. Visit Golden primarily targets Front Range residents and promotes Golden as a perfect day trip, easy overnight getaway or afternoon/evening adventure. Visit Golden also works to promote the city’s arts, culture and museums to make potential visitors aware of all Golden has to offer. Due to the modest budget, out-of-region visitors are not targeted, although Visit Golden cooperates with the Colorado Tourism Office and Visit Denver to support their outreach to outof-state markets. Tourism is a valuable source of revenue that Golden businesses rely on to operate year-round. While businesses may flourish in the busy summer season, Golden merchants, restaurants and breweries can often struggle during slower periods. According to Aimee Valdez, who along with her husband Dean, owns Miners Saloon, Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse, and Bella Colibri, “Visit Golden’s efforts are a very important element in keeping local businesses like ours afloat in the off-season. And visitation by our fellow Golden residents, especially in slower times, is critical to keep Golden thriving.” By promoting Golden's business, Visit Golden also supports the taxes generated from them, which help fund trails, parks and other amernities. Without visitors, Golden residents alone would not be able to support the variety and large number of retail and restaurant options in a town our size. Tourism also helps provide employment in the community, as well as entry level and summer jobs for students. It uses very few public dollars, yet brings back enormous financial benefits to the town. Visit Golden promotes the city’s arts, culture, history, recreation, events, dining, shopping and local industry. In conjunction with City of Golden Communications staff, Visit Golden also encourages responsible tourism and trail etiquette, shares safety messages like creek closures, and encourages parking in downtown garages and parking lots to reduce impacts on neighborhoods. According to Renee Rineheimer with the Golden Hotel, “As a small business, we have been able to leverage the hard work of Visit Golden to make sound decisions that benefit our business, as well as our shared community. We are thankful for their ongoing communication and their strategic planning to keep Golden as a thriving community with economic vitality. Lifeguards Still In Demand for Summer – Now Hiring!
A
severe lifeguard shortage continues to alter summer pool plans across the country in 2022. City of Golden swimming pools at the Golden Community Center and Splash are no exception. As of midJune, the City’s Recreation Division reports having half of the certified lifeguards needed to safely operate a full summer swimming pool experience. So far this summer, pool hours at the Community Center and Splash have been reduced, groups have been limited and not all amenities are available every day. Lifeguards that work for the City of Golden are certified through the American Red Cross and must be at least 16 years old. Wages start at $15 per hour and a summer bonus program provides an extra incentive paid at the end of the season. In addition, lifeguards enjoy “Freezer Fridays” with free ice cream each week of the summer
along with a staff barbecue and other fun activities. While lifeguarding is often thought of as a great first job for teenagers, it’s also a great opportunity for an active retiree. Currently, the City of Golden lifeguard team ranges in age from 16-66 years old. Lifeguards that work at City of Golden pools enjoy free access to the Golden Community Center and Splash, making it a great way to stay active and save money on that pool pass. It’s also a great way to give back to the community by passing on a love for swimming to the next generation of swimmers and ensuring that all Golden kids have pool access this summer. he brand-new Rick Souders: The Art of Edible Imagery photography exhibit is now on display at Golden History Museum. Goldenbased Rick Souders has been creating sumptuous, mouthwatering imagery for food and beverage advertising campaigns worldwide. Now, selected works of his will be on display through October 2. Souders grew up on the rural high plains near the Pawnee National Grasslands. His passion for food and agriculture runs deep and he credits his upbringing for playing a formative role in his development as a food and beverage photographer. Said Souders of his art, “Working with light, texture, color, form and shape is so amazing to me. Then add food and beverage and you simply can’t go wrong. My food art photography combines my interest in color theory and color psychology. The use of color, light and texture is both harmonious and jolting. The food is graphic, textural and tonal and creates its own story. The crisp colors, amazing textural depth and quality of light is stunning. I create images to satisfy my creative hunger.” Souders also photographed 15 Goldenites for an exhibit called Face to Face: Contemporary Portraits of Legendary People. Inspired by the commissioned portraits of William Loveland and George West in the museum collection, Face to Face was only on view in 2013 and 2014, but you can now see the images in the GHM&P Online Collection. Social, Economic & Environmental Issues Colorado School of Mines Senior Design Presentations
W
hen it’s time to evaluate newer sustainable technologies for Golden’s projects and programs, the City of Golden often turns to the Colorado School of Mines undergraduate seniors for their assistance. This academic year two groups of students, under the guidance of City staff and technical advisors, worked to implement beneficial recovery systems from wastewater for their capstone design projects. One team researched how heat recovery from wastewater could increase the energy efficiency in new buildings. A second team researched how nitrogen recovery from urine has the potential to reduce vehicle miles traveled associated with fertilizing local crops or community gardens. The teams have played an important role in proving their feasibility and the City appreciates the partnership with Mines for their academic expertise. How Do I Know My Recyclables Are Getting Recycled?
I
f you’ve ever typed “Do recyclable materials actually get recycled?” into your favorite search engine, then you may have been faced with a confusing assortment of percentages or news articles attempting to answer this question. For customers of the City Pay-As-You-Throw waste hauling program the answer is simple: Yes. The City’s waste hauler, Republic Services, transports recyclables from Golden’s curbsides to Altogether Recycling, a material recovery facility (aka, the "MeRF") in north Denver. The hauler demonstrates that recyclables make it to the facility by providing receipts and material volume data to the City, which also help track progress toward the City’s diversion goals. From this data, it is estimated that Golden diverts an average of 70 tons of material, or 15 pounds per household, of recyclables every month through the City’s collection program. Once materials are sorted, baled, and sold to the end processor, they become valuable commodities on the secondary market. Altogether Recycling has expert staff who keep up to date on market conditions and adjust operations as needed to meet demand. Occasionally, if demand for a certain material is low, Altogether Recycling has the capacity to store that material until their experts can find another market. When the demand stays low for a significant amount of time, Altogether Recycling has policies to slow the intake of that material to their facility, but in every case, these materials are never landfilled. The majority of recycled materials have established markets in the U.S. and this helps keep demand predictable. Glass goes from the MeRF to Momentum Recycling, where it is cleaned and sorted, then on to the well-known bottle plants that make beer in Golden and Fort Collins. • Aluminum – Various mills in the southeast part of the U.S. • Plastics – Going to Texas, Louisiana, the Carolinas, or some foreign markets. For plastics collected through the city's residential program, nearly all of their plastics are processed domestically.
Golden Police Department Honors Jamie Segal, Code Enforcement Supervisor, as Employee of the Year
J
amie Segal was named as the Golden Police Department’s Employee of the Year for 2021. Jamie has the exceptionally difficult job of supervising Code Enforcement, Animal Control, Parking Enforcement and Park Rangers. In 2021, Jamie truly stepped up to the challenge of keeping the Clear Creek Corridor safe. He trained eight park rangers and managed transition in the code enforcement and parking officer ranks. Jamie also participated in high-level city meetings involving Clear Creek, offering expertise and on-the-ground experience. Overall, Jamie maintained a great attitude, working through all these challenges and changes that took place in 2021. Jamie was born and raised outside of Boston, MA. He attended Tufts University where he played four years of volleyball and graduated with a bachelor’s degree with a

major in Biology and Chemistry. Jamie knew quickly that he wanted to work with animals. His first job in his chosen career was as a livestock manager, raising exotic animals for production, including bison, caribou, ostriches, and wild boar. Jamie’s career then took him on an adventure, moving to south Florida to work at Zoo Miami. He was a zookeeper for large African Mammals for six years. Jamie’s love of the mountains was too strong to keep him in south Florida, so he moved to Colorado in 2003. Jamie has worked for the Golden Police Department Code Enforcement unit for the past 19 years while raising his family. If he is not on the job, you will probably find him at a local hockey rink watching his boys or in the mountains hiking with his wife and dogs.
Wildfire Risk Zones in Golden
Coming to a Neighborhood Near You
O
n Wednesday, June 29, the City of Golden hosted its first community-wide meeting to brief the public on the recently updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan. The Golden Fire Department, many City Departments and Jefferson County Open Space led a discussion about the ten wildfire risk zones identified in Golden, a high-level overview of mitigation efforts and evacuation planning done by the City and Jefferson County recently, and ways that individuals and families can best be prepared in the event of a wildfire. This meeting is the first in a series of meetings that will happen throughout the City of Golden in the summer and fall of 2022. Representatives from the Golden Fire Department and the City’s Community Engagement office will coordinate with neighborhood groups and HOAs to establish meetings within the wildfire risk zones in Golden. These in-the-community meetings will be the best setting for neighborhood groups to talk through neighborhood-specific mitigation efforts. The American Legion Golden Post 21 will be cooking up hot dogs and brats, beer and wine are for sale, and five specialty food trucks will also be on hand. This year the Lions Club will be accepting electronic forms of payment. All day music programming makes for a festive foot-stomping day.
