HEADS UP: Important Upcoming Items National Night Out Aug. 7 National Night Out is an annual community event that promotes policecommunity partnerships in a fun and relaxing environment. The Golden Police Department is proud to host the 19th annual event from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7 in Parfet Park, on the corner of 10th Street and Washington Avenue. There will be live music, performances, raffle prizes, free food and drink, and much more!

Non-Emergency Phone Number for Police and Fire A few months ago, the Golden Dispatch center moved out of Golden and joined the rest of the region in Lakewood. The new dispatch center is called JeffCom, and it covers nearly all of Jefferson County. As a result, the non-emergency number that used to get you directly to a Golden dispatcher, now goes to a phone tree. Here is the new non-emergency phone number to reach police and fire dispatchers directly: 303-980-7300. Please put this in your phone or your address book so that you have it handy. As always, if you have an emergency to report, dial 9-1-1.

Dash at the Splash The deadline is Aug. 8 to sign your kids up for the annual Dash at the Splash Kids’ Triathlon.

Give your young ones the opportunity to challenge themselves to swimming, biking and running on a course especially designed for kids. The age groups are 11-12 years, 9-10 years, and 8 and under. Registration is $35 per participant. The Dash at the Splash event is on Saturday, Aug. 11 at The Splash Water Park, 3151 Illinois St. For a complete list of rules, details, and to sign up, visit https://rec.cityofgolden.net. Lookout Mountain Road Closures Aug. 17 & 18 The annual CSM Freshman “M” Climb takes place on Friday, Aug. 17. Each year, before classes start, freshmen carry up a 10 lb. rock and then whitewash the “M”. To keep the students safe, Lookout Mountain Road will be closed from the Bonvue Drive intersection to Lariat Loop Road on the Golden side of Buffalo Bill’s Grave from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, Lookout Mountain Road will be closed to traffic beginning at 6 a.m. until approximately noon for the Colorado Classic Bicycle Race. Only local traffic and residents will be allowed in and out. Bicyclers are allowed to ride up to grab a spot and watch the iconic climbing part of the race. Racers should come through at approximately 11 a.m. See p. 17 for more details.

Golden Fire Department’s Safety and Preparedness Day Mark your calendars for a fun-filled safety event for the entire family from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. The Golden Fire Department, along with the University of Colorado Hospital Burn Center and Colorado State Patrol, will host its annual Safety and Preparedness Day. This event will be held at Golden Fire Station #1 at 911 10th St. The event will include up close and personal fire truck tours, live fire demonstrations, game-based fire and burn education for all ages, and free car seat checks.

There will be opportunities to learn about safety in the home and the community. Come enjoy activities and safety education for everyone in your household. There will also be drawings for door prizes, and all-you-can-eat popcorn along with an assortment of refreshments.

Connecting Councilors, Community and City

y first months as a City Councilor have been both rewarding and challenging. While I have known the town since before I could ride a bicycle, I had little knowledge about how it actually functions until after I got elected. Learning about the day-to-day operations of Golden has been eye opening. There are a lot of moving parts that need to function in harmony for our government to work. In these months, I have learned that staff is dedicated, hard-working and committed to our city and its residents. Largely as a result of the staff’s efforts, we have a town to be proud of.

Now that I have a better grasp of the intricacies of how our city functions, I want to do more to make sure our town government is getting the feedback it needs from our citizens to represent you. When I was going door-to-door campaigning, I heard from almost everyone I spoke with that folks were concerned that Golden was growing too fast and losing its small-town feel. People felt like they were either not informed of an issue before it was decided, or that when they weighed-in on an issue, their concerns were not being heard. After serving on Council for a number of months, I have learned that staff works hard to keep us informed, and that we, as citizens, have resources to obtain information and to make our voices heard. Here are a few:

Golden History Museum Re-Opening is Grand

O

ne of the most important responsibilities of the Golden History Museum and its staff is to preserve and share the story of our community. However, with more than 16,000 objects in its collection and more than 150 years of history to tell, there’s far more content than can ever be displayed in just 5,000 square feet of museum galleries.

In the run-up to this year, the 80th anniversary, the museum undertook a master plan to renovate the aging facility, create a comprehensive visitor experience, and make a welcoming space for visitors to interact with and access the collection.

Dubbed Discovery Awaits, the renovation campaign raised $350,000—mostly from private donations—for a complete transformation of the museum’s public spaces.

Visitors to Golden History Museum today will find a cohesive overview of Golden’s formative episodes in Epic Events and biographies of important locals in Legendary People. The multipurpose Salon is an intimate Wild West themed gallery that also serves as a theater for showing the museum’s film collection and is a versatile program space for lectures and classes. History Lab is a new space for viewing, studying, and documenting artifacts. Visitors can peruse new items coming in and interact with staff and volunteers working with objects.

A full research library with both new and rare books pertaining to Golden’s history, maps, directories, and files as well as digitized newspapers and photographs are easily accessed.

History is important because it binds together different generations. Golden History Museum has made multiple improvements to engage and entertain families with young children. The new Touch Gallery is a hands-on space to build and play while exploring Golden’s clay-mining heritage. Family activities are found throughout the museum inviting children and adults to create, search, discover, and interact together.

oming in September, the 6th Annual City of Golden Public Works Citizens’ Academy.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED: • How Golden’s water is treated?

• How we maintain and repair our infrastructure?

• How we map and track water, sewer and street-related assets within the community?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should join us for the 6th Annual Public Works Citizens’ Academy. This free 20-hour program is designed for adults and begins Sept. 5. It includes interactive hands-on training activities, tours of City facilities like the water treatment plant, mountain reservoirs, shop facilities, pump stations and other facilities, and presentations by Public Works staff. Participants will receive all necessary safety equipment and will have the opportunity to experience simulated Public Works working conditions. To conclude the program, graduates of the Academy will be awarded Certificates of Completion at an October City Council meeting.

Inaugural ARTSWEEK a Success

T

o celebrate its 50th year in Golden, the Foothills Art Center (FAC) hosted ARTSWEEK Golden, a weeklong celebration of the arts. In mid-July, artists brought their talents to the city in many forms including performance art, sidewalk chalk masterpieces, plein air painting, and many city sculptures were adorned with yarn-bombing! The celebration culminated with a two-day arts festival on the Colorado School of Mines campus, with 80 artists selling their wares including jewelry, paintings, art, and clothing.

The FAC, in partnership with Miners Alley Playhouse and many other galleries and arts organizations, set out to showcase how strong the art scene is in Golden. FAC says the 168 hours of art was a success and they plan to host it again next July.

PILOT PROGRAM ENDS

ou may have seen yellow bikes all over town throughout most of June and July. You may have also noticed they are now gone. The City of Golden agreed to allow the bike sharing company, ofo, to implement a one-year pilot program in the city. However, in mid-July, the program came to an abrupt halt as the company pulled out of Golden and many other cities throughout the country.

According to the Wall Street Journal, ofo told its U.S

employees that it is cutting the vast majority of its workforce in the U.S. and retreating to a handful of larger cities. Although this particular pilot program was thwarted, Golden staff is encouraged by its popularity in such a short time. “The bike share idea is a new and quickly evolving transportation option,” said Golden Planning Manager Rick Muriby. “We will continue to watch the industry and evaluate other options going forward.”

A Legacy Not Forgotten

ormer Golden Mayor Charles (Chuck) Baroch passed away on June 22, just three days short of his 86th birthday. Chuck was elected to serve on Golden City Council representing District 2 in 1996. At that time, members of city council elected the position of mayor. “Chuck Baroch was first selected to be mayor by his fellow city councilors after a tumultuous election,” said former City Manager Mike Bestor. “Two years later, Chuck became the first mayor directly elected by the citizens of Golden – a victory which showed how much the residents respected his leadership during that difficult time.”

Mayor Baroch and his wife of 62 years, Carol, lived in Golden for 24 years. Carol remembered, “He loved Golden and felt privileged to serve the community in many ways. He was a strong leader. He knew he could not please everyone, so he voted his conscience and put his own interests aside to see that the will of the people was represented.” Carol said it was very difficult for them to leave Golden to move to Ohio in their “golden years,” but they moved to be closer to family. Chuck and Carol had four children and is survived by three children, five grandchildren, and one great grandson. “Chuck was a kind, gentle man,” added Carol. “He loved and enjoyed his family and took a great interest in everything they pursued.”

Chuck and Carol worked hard for the good of Golden. “In 62 years of marriage we were constant companions,” said Carol.

“We drew strength from each other. We worked as a team and did a lot of volunteer activities together, starting in Golden with the October Fest (long gone) in 1991.” Chuck also served on GURA for five years, the Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee for ten years, he volunteered at the Visitor’s Center, Christian Action Guild, Vision 2010 Committee, and raised money and mentored students at the Colorado School of Mines. Chuck and Carol had a strong passion for the Golden Civic Foundation (GCF). One of Golden’s most well-known residents and philanthropists, Frederick A. “Heinie” Foss started the GCF with his wife Barbara as a way to invest in the economic and cultural vitality of the Golden community. It was Heinie who asked Chuck Baroch to become the first executive director of GCF – a role in which he proudly served for ten years.

Chuck Baroch was born in Denver in 1932. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He went on to get his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State College. Upon graduation, Chuck joined the Army Corps of Engineers and then spent most of his career working in the power generation business for various corporations and levels of government.

In honor of Mayor Chuck Baroch, the City of Golden will soon plant a tree along Clear Creek, a place he and his bride loved to walk to enjoy the beauty of the city they helped to make great.

Learn and Do What Golden Police Do

Y

ou have until Aug. 16 to sign up for the 2018 Police Citizens’ Academy! The Academy begins on Aug. 22 and runs for 12 weeks. During that time, you will learn what police officers and police employees do in the performance of their duties, with a mix of classroom and skills education. You will also gain a better understanding of the rules and laws that guide our officers.

The Academy combines classroom presentations with hands-on activities to provide the participants with a comprehensive experience. Participants will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, and two Saturdays for firing range and driving track training (yes, you get to drive a police car!)

Throughout the course of the Academy, participants will be exposed to K9 patrol, drug enforcement, traffic accident investigations, communications, patrol duties and realities, DUI traffic enforcement, the Jefferson County Regional SWAT team, a tour of the Jefferson County Jail, crime scene investigations, firearms, scenario simulator, Taser and driving track training.

Welcome to Golden’s Newest Volunteer Firefighters Ten Golden Fire Department volunteer recruits, along with four from Pleasant View and one from Golden Gate, are the latest graduates of the Fire Academy.

Rest assured these men and women are well-trained for the difficult job of protecting our community… a job for which they volunteer their time and energy. The academy was 300 hours long and included Colorado State Firefighter I and Hazmat Operations Certifications along with specialty training in Technical Rescue, Wildland Firefighting, and Active Shooter Rescue Task Force.

The recruits are coming on board during a summer that has been especially busy for Golden Fire, with nearly 250 calls for service just in the month of June – that’s significantly above average. The recruits are now in their probationary year and must complete 60 more hours of training and a Skills Task Book in order to become fullfledged Golden firefighters. Congratulations and welcome to our newest force of first responders!

Singletrack Sidewalks Proposed in Golden

T

he Golden Giddyup, a local nonprofit focused on trail stewardship in the Golden area, has proposed a new project for riders of all ages in the Golden community. This project would build single-track sidewalks (natural surface trails) next to existing paved bike paths to provide a place for young and beginner riders to experience the joys of mountain biking.

The proposed Singletrack Sidewalks pilot project (STS) would stretch from Apex Park to the 6th Avenue trail along the bike path. This construction of the pilot track would be of no cost to the City of Golden, thanks to the Golden Giddyup Trail Team volunteers in partnership with neighborhood organizations and the City of Golden Parks and Recreation staff.

f you have ever let your lawn go without water during a hot and dry spell, you may have watched it turn brown and thought that your lawn was dying. Then, after applying water, you watched with surprise as your grass came right back to life! That’s because your grass wasn’t dead, it just went dormant.

When Kentucky Bluegrass (a very common kind of turf grass used in Colorado lawns) doesn’t get enough water, it goes dormant. Dormancy allows the grass to focus its energy on the roots, causing the leaves to turn brown. This protection mechanism helps it survive during times of drought on only tiny amounts of water.

The festival features the works of over 125 artists who are selected though a competitive jury process.

Professional Cycling Returns to Golden!

he Colorado Classic returns to Golden for its second year! The international race is an actionpacked four days of professional cycling, with both men’s and women’s teams competing on some of the most popular biking routes along the Front Range.

The event is televised internationally, and here in Golden, where we have a long history of amazing races in our bike-friendly town, we are fortunate to once again experience the thrill of professional cycling first hand!

On Saturday, Aug. 18, (the same day as the Golden Fine Arts Festival – see previous page and map below for traffic impacts), Stage 3 of the men’s race will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Denver. Riders make their way through Golden and up the iconic Lookout Mountain hill climb on their way through Morrison and Red Rocks, heading to Evergreen and Conifer, and then back to Denver. While the riders will only be in town briefly, it’s a great opportunity to watch Olympic Medalists and National and World Champion racers

in action. Anyone who was in town during the USA Pro Challenge days will remember the excitement as the cyclists whiz by in front of you.
