Last year was a challenging time for everyone and we are excited to be welcoming you back or welcoming you here for the first time. Golden is a historic, mountain town that’s only 15 miles from downtown Denver and offers spectacular views of the mountains and mesas. There’s so much to do here, and we’re happy to share all of our must-visit spots with you in this year’s Golden Official Visitors Guide.

Goosetown is Golden’s historic German district, having come into its own during the 1870s as immigrant railroad workers settled around the main works of the Colorado Central Railroad on its north side. The origin of the name “Goosetown” is thought to have been inspired either by the nearby large flock of geese Adolph Coors kept, or the cackling of the female inhabitants of the locality.

3 Burgess House Constructed in 1866 by German immigrant miner Thomas Burgess, the Burgess House is Golden’s oldest remaining hotel and rooming house.

Originally built to include a first floor public room and a basement saloon, Burgess House became a hotel in 1872 with the arrival of the railroad.

Lured not by the riches to be made from mining the hills, but from “mining the miners,” the Boston Company set up the first mercantile in Golden in 1859.

In 1859, a young tavern owner named Edgar Vanover began making personal threats to a number of townspeople.

An inebriated Vanover began shooting wildly, pointing his weapon at people. A mob of angered citizens chased after Vanover, who fled to a nearby cabin. Without so much as an indictment or trial, the mob condemned the man to death. Vanover was brought to a beef gallows that stood at the southeast corner of Ford Street and Clear Creek and was summarily hanged.

In 1873, two German immigrants— Jacob Schueler and Adolph Coors— opened a small brewery at the base of South Table Mountain in Golden.

They began producing beer following a Czech Pilsner recipe Coors had obtained through his experiences as a brewer. Their enterprise, which began in an abandoned tannery, has grown to become the largest single-site brewery on the planet.

6 Greeley’s Crossing Horace Greeley, the famed author and publisher of the New York Tribune who famously popularized the saying “Go West, young man, and grow up with the country” himself visited Colorado in 1859.

Greeley came to Golden to see the supply town that sprang up along Clear Creek. A toll bridge crossing the stream was still under construction, so Greeley decided to ford the creek, swollen with spring runoff.

7 Welcome Arch Golden businessman, Lu Holland, who owned and operated his eponymous Holland House (today’s Table Mountain Inn) felt Golden needed an iconic sign to promote the city and attract business. In 1948, Paul Reeves designed a modern, steelframework structure that arced 58 feet over Washington Avenue, lit with neon and emblazoned with the words “Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden.” During renovations in 1979, the last word in the tagline “Where

the West Remains” was changed to “Lives,” as the former sounded unpleasantly similar to mortal remains. Now a local landmark, the Welcome Arch is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado.

8 Jolly Rancher Dorothy and Bill Harmsen opened their first ice cream store at 1113 Washington Avenue in June 1949.

Called “Jolly Rancher,” the name was intended to evoke a fun, Western hospitality. Jolly Rancher ice cream and confections were a terrific hit, but sales slumped during the cold winter months. So, the Harmsens turned their attention to making hard candies in fruit flavors.

Jolly Ranchers remain one of America’s most iconic candies.

9 Loveland Cottage Constructed in 1859, Loveland’s Cottage that stands at 717 12th Street is Golden’s oldest building.

William Loveland was one of the most important settlers of Golden.

Loveland arrived in Golden in 1859 during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush.

When the Colorado Territory was established in 1861, Loveland was one of the biggest promoters of making Golden its capital, which happened the following year.

As part of William Loveland’s plan to lure the territorial capital to Golden, he offered the Legislature free use of his property. In 1864, the Legislature met in Loveland’s original wooden mercantile on the east side of Washington Avenue.

On December 9, 1867, the legislature met in Loveland’s building and heatedly debated where to place the capital. A vote was taken and the decision was to relocate the capital to Denver.

11 Foss Drug Store Opened in 1913 by Henry and Dorothy Foss, the Foss Drug Store was a Golden institution for nearly a century. What began as a simple drug and sundry store expanded over the decades and overtook the buildings on both sides. Foss had the State’s first liquor license, which it obtained before prohibition, and could issue prescribed alcohol. In the 1970s, Foss introduced its own house bourbon label called Ski Country. Foss Drug closed its doors in 2007.

12 The Armory Building Built in 1913, The Armory Building is one of the most identifiable buildings in Golden. Constructed entirely from river rock drawn from Clear Creek, the Armory is believe to be the largest cobblestone building west of the Mississippi.

During the 1917/1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, the Armory was temporarily converted into an emergency hospital for the Red Cross.

13 Astor House During the gold and silver rush years, boarding houses like Astor House provided a temporary home for thousands of treasure seekers who flooded Colorado seeking their fortunes. Astor House was built in 1867 from locally quarried sandstone. Having fallen into a state of serious disrepair, it was slated to be demolished in 1970. A group of concerned citizens rallied to preserve the building, and in 1972 it was purchased and saved by a public vote.

15 of Clear Creek, 12th Street on the south side of the creek was Golden’s genteel neighborhood. Featuring some of the best examples of Victorian and Italianate architecture in the City, 12th Street was home to some of the City’s prominent businessmen, civic leaders and educators. The home at 1018 12th Street was built

by George West, one of Golden’s earliest founders. The brick Italianate house at 920 12th Street was the home of Dr. James Kelly, a physician and territorial legislator.

Today, the home is best known as the Golden City Brewery—one of State’s first microbreweries founded by Charlie and Janine Sturdavant in 1993.

15 Golden History Park The History Park is home to many of the original buildings from the historic Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon (about fifteen miles away as the crow flies).

The Pearce and Reynolds families were Cornish immigrants who settled in the hills west of Golden in the 1870s to mine, ranch and farm.

Today, Golden History Park is one of the most popular and scenic gathering spots in Golden.

16 Golden History Museum Established as the Jefferson County Historical Museum in 1938, the Golden History Museum & Park is the oldest cultural institution in Golden. The History Museum is home to more than 15,000 artifacts that tell the story of Golden’s history from founding to the present including rare Coors pottery items, Jolly Rancher and Coors Company materials, and an extensive archive of maps, directories and digitized newspapers. • VISITGOLDEN.COM

Located in spectacular Clear Creek valley and surrounded by mesas and mountains, Golden, Colorado, is where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, making it one of the most popular outdoor play destinations in Colorado.

A RIVER RUNS right through the center of town, and there are ample opportunities for hiking, biking, rock climbing, fly fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, hang gliding and camping. restaurants, ice cream, candy, jewelry, craft breweries and more. Generals Grant and Sherman, Buffalo Bill and many other famous Western characters walked these same streets. For some old-fashioned fun, hop on the Golden Hayride for an entertaining ride through town or stop by Oh! Susanna Vintage Photo Parlor—an old-time photo studio where you can choose between Wild West, Steampunk or Victorian costumes and backgrounds for a truly fun photo. Bring the family, friends and even the dog!

FOOTHILLS ART CENTER Located in historic downtown Golden, we offer art, education, and cultural excellence through exhibitions and art programs for learners of all ages. Founded in 1968, we are on the National Registry of Historic Buildings, housed in an 1872 church, surrounded by a sculpture garden.

The Mines Museum on the lovely campus of the Colorado School of Mines offers the Bob Weimer Geology Trail, an outdoor guided walking tour that covers local geology with an opportunity to see dinosaur footprints and the Colorado Rock Hall of Fame. A major geological fault runs through the center of Golden, making it one of the most fascinating geological destinations in the world with 260 million years of history visible in the colorful red and white rock formations, buttes, and mountains around town.

THE LARIAT LOOP TRAIL In the 1920s, Denver created its Mountain Park system, a series of two dozen parks including Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave, and the buffalo herd overlook to preserve some of the great beauty spots of the Front Range.

The parks were then connected by a circular road named The Lariat Loop Trail. The loop still exists as the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway; 40 miles of Western Adventure. Begin in downtown Golden where you can pick up a coffee or picnic and then take the twisting and curving drive up Lookout Mountain. The road gains 1,300 feet in just 4.3 miles with enough sweeping views and drop-offs to thrill any visitor. It climaxes at the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain. Then continue on up to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center or Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave. The road continues a few miles to Genesee Mountain Park and the buffalo overlook, where it’s possible to see Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo with a snowcapped mountain panorama in the background. THE OLD WEST AND RED ROCKS LOOP From anywhere in Denver, take I-70 west to Colorado Hwy. 58, Exit 265. This Golden Freeway will take you through a scenic backdoor of Clear Creek Valley, right between North and South Table Mountains. You can exit at McIntyre Street and follow signs to drive by the Colorado Railroad Museum to get a taste of old steam locomotives and railroading in the West.

Park is one of the world’s top rock climbing attractions. If you’re not a rock climber, you’ll still love the views, the scenic river flowing through the center of the canyon, and a wonderful one-mile trail that is an old abandoned railroad cut.

South Boulder is home to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The buildings were designed by I.M. Pei who also designed the pyramid at the Louvre in Paris.

There’s an outdoor half-mile Weather Trail that explains some unique aspects of weather in Colorado. From here, you can backtrack down scenic Hwy. 93 to Golden for a quick stop in one of the town’s restaurants or breweries for take-out and growlers to go.

CLEAR CREEK CANYON TO CENTRAL CITY AND THE “OH MY GOD ROAD”

past the Coors Brewery complex and into downtown Golden.

Turn left on Washington Avenue and park to explore historic Golden; the first capital of the Colorado Territory. Walk along the paved trail on the north side of Clear Creek and visit Golden History Museum & Park. Uncover Golden’s history in the museum and walk through the three-acre park; home to a historic farmstead and school house from the 1860s. Stop in at the Golden Visitors Center or go to VisitGolden.com for details on the attractions, shops, trails, dining and lodging options in Golden.

Leave Golden on Hwy. 6 for a few miles and turn right on Hwy. 40, which winds over the Dakota Hogback to Dinosaur Ridge.

Here, you can make a stop to view actual dinosaur bones from 70 million years ago still imbedded in rock. It’s a short drive from Dinosaur Ridge to Red Rocks Amphitheatre where you can continue your trip with one of nature’s wonders.

HIGHWAY 93 AND THE BACK ROAD TO BOULDER The most interesting way to drive Boulder is to head west to Golden, then go north on Hwy. 93, one of the last undeveloped stretches of road along the Front Range. Large parts of it have been preserved as open space by Boulder and now offer ranch lands, canal walks and pretty grass fields with the Flatirons as a backdrop. In addition to the scenic drive, two attractions along Hwy. 93 are well worth a stop. Eldorado Canyon State

After a bite to eat in Golden, head up Hwy. 6 through Clear Creek Canyon. This is one of the narrowest, steepest and most dramatic canyons in Colorado, and is internationally known as a rock climbing area. Depending on restrictions, you might see rafters, kayakers, fishermen, and even gold-panners along the way. Stop at Mayhem Gulch Trailhead, 12 miles west of Golden, and hike for a bit on the new Peaks to Plains Trail. Currently, there are four miles of creek-side paved trails.

At the junction with Hwy. 119, turn right to Black Hawk, the largest gambling center in Colorado with 10,000 slot machines, poker, Black Jack and roulette in nearly two dozen casinos.

From Black Hawk, turn left and climb one mile to the historic mining town of Central City. Once called the “richest spot on earth,” Central City in the 1870s had a population of 30,000 and was the largest gold rush boom town in Colorado. On the hills and dirt roads above town, you’ll find historic graveyards, old mines and ghost towns, while the town itself is a treasuretrove of beautiful brick and stone Victorian buildings.

Southwest of the town, look for signs for the Virginia Canyon Road, known to locals as the “Oh My God Road.” Legend has it that it got its name because stagecoach passengers would look out the window at the sheer drop offs and moan, “Oh My God!” There are beautiful views of Mount Evans along the way, but keep your eyes on the road, go slow, pause on narrow turns, and follow signs for Idaho Springs, another old gold mining town. From here, you can take I-70 east for a few miles until the exit for Hwy. 6 and a return to Golden through scenic Clear Creek Canyon viewing the dramatic rock formations from a different direction.

Jesse is a Golden-based artist, Colorado native and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys climbing and cycling. For over a decade, he has been capturing the beauty and wonder of the area with the rich color and sharp contrast of his colorful acrylic paintings. His pieces reflect the vibrant Colorado landscape of the places he travels to and loves to spend time in.

Just east of Golden on 10th Street (which becomes 44th Avenue), the museum houses over 100 locomotives in its 15-acre railyard. Golden Public Art Walking Tour: Pick up a free Golden Public Art Walking Tour brochure at the Golden Visitors Center and take a delightful stroll past the more than two dozen public art works, beautiful statues and murals that capture the spirit of the West.

Triceratops Trail: A 1.5-mile gravel hiking trail winds between large, vertical walls of sandstone and into reclaimed clay pits. Along the trail are stops highlighting clay mining and dinosaur, bird, mammal, insect and invertebrate tracks and traces, as well as several walls full of plant impressions.

Lariat Loop: Spend a pleasant afternoon cruising the 40-mile route that retraces the motoring adventures of the early 1920s. Drivers experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars. Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains still have sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides to refresh and delight the traveler. Enjoy amazing vistas of the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains or stop at one of the many attractions along the Loop.

ATTRACTIONS WITH FREE ADMISSION The Mines Museum: Located on the Colorado School of Mines’ campus, the Mines Museum is home to one of the state’s two Goodwill moon rocks collected during the Apollo 17 mission and offers an extraordinary collection of rocks, minerals, gems and specimens. Don’t miss their simulated uranium mine or the gift shop.

Golden History Museum & Park: Step back in time to a mountain homestead when you visit the three-acre Golden History Park, which features a one-room schoolhouse, log cabins, blacksmith shop and chicken coop with heirloom chickens. Across the creek is the Golden History Museum, with exhibits on the city’s rich evolution from a mining supply town to being home to innovative and worldfamous companies.

Foothills Art Center: Housed in an 1872 Gothicstyle church, an 1892 Queen Anne-style manse and a Victorian-era mansion built in 1899, and surrounded by a sculpture garden, Foothills Art Center offers an engaging rotation of exhibits and classes to inspire the community.

Red Rocks Trail

Lookout Mountain Nature Center: Kids and adults can connect with the natural world and learn more about it through free educational programs and exhibits at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. Interactive exhibits take visitors on a tour of the flora and fauna of the foothills ecosystem. Kids and adults alike enjoy the hands-on playroom, observation room and wildlife sightings. At each turn, visitors discover earth-friendly elements of the building’s sustainable design, including floors made from recycled train boxcars.

The Boettcher Mansion: In the heart of the Lookout Mountain Nature Preserve, the Boettcher Mansion provides a rare combination of historic authenticity and modern convenience. Tour the mansion and enjoy the historically accurate interior and Craftsman-style furnishings.

FREE RECREATION Rent a Free Bike from the Golden Bike Library: “Check-out” a free bike for up to two hours for local use! The program runs from April through October and provides adult and children’s bikes behind the Visitors Center.

Hikes & Trails: By far, the most popular free activities in Golden are a walk along Clear Creek or a hike in the foothills.

Get out and enjoy the area’s abundance of natural beauty located only 20 minutes from downtown Denver. Some popular trails include: North Table Mountain, Mount Galbraith and the Peaks to Plains Trail, an easy paved, all-weather bike and hiking trail along Clear Creek and through some of the most dramatic parts of the canyon between Golden and Idaho Springs. Workout at the Red Rocks: Rolling Stone Magazine named Red Rocks Amphitheatre the No. 1 outdoor concert venue in North America. But it’s also a stunning spot for free fitness.

Most mornings, you’ll find a dedicated crew running the stairs, practicing yoga and hiking among the beautiful rock formations that gave Red Rocks its name.

Picnic by the Creek: Honored by Westword as the “best trail in Denver,” the Clear Creek Trail is also a perfect spot to picnic. There are designated picnic tables, as well as benches and seats. You can spread out on the large rocks alongside the stream and watch the fly fishers and kayakers practice their crafts while catching sight of paragliders swooping around Mt. VISIT GOLDEN LIKE A LOCAL Go where the locals go! Here are three people who have made a big impact on Golden and how they would spend their perfect day in Golden.

Owner of Baby Doe’s I like to start my day with a walk to work along Tucker's Gulch and up to the Clear Creek path. As I’m walking, I often see customers and friends along the paths and sometimes act as tour guide for visitors, advising on where to go The Rose Event Center and what to do. My 15-minute walking commute to Baby Doe’s is the perfect way to start a day. I try to get an early start to stop at Café 13 and enjoy coffee and breakfast in their wonderful outdoor seating area. Sometimes, I see so many people I know that my eggs are cold by the time I get around to eating them.

After a day of greeting customers at Baby Doe’s, my husband and I walk Washington Avenue and pop into Vital Outdoors to check out their great selection of shoes. I love our downtown shops and especially enjoy The Red Wagon, Blue Moose Trading Company and Earth Sweet Botanicals.

We make our way up the hill for dinner at the Sherpa House Restaurant and Cultural Center. This restaurant is such a treasure. There’s not another place like it in the state. We especially love taking visitors here.

On the walk home, we wander through the Golden History Park and enjoy the gardens and say ‘hello’ to the chickens. This free park is another Golden gem. If the weather is just right, we sit and soak up the sunset from one of the benches or picnic tables. It truly is the perfect way to end a day in Golden.

My perfect day in Golden would probably start with a mountain bike ride down the Enchanted Forest and Apex Trail, while my wife trail-ran alongside me. After we finished, we’d grab the stroller and take our son on a leisurely walk down the creek path to the Golden Farmers Market (Saturdays, June– October). After picking up some local produce and a cup of coffee at Sully’s Coffee Camper, we’d go watch the guys from Paraglide Tandem launching off of Lookout Mountain Eventually, we would make our way over to Kona Bowls and grab a healthy Acai Bowl or avocado toast before running a few errands. Then we’d head to Foss Liquor Store to stock up on craft beer and wine for the weekend. Come lunchtime we’d definitely pick up some sandwiches from Al at D’Deli and take them to a Colorado School of Mines football game at the new Marv Kay Stadium. Once they beat their opponent (Go, Orediggers!), we’d go celebrate with happy hour at Woody’s Wood-fired Pizza on the porch. My wife would order the Drunken Pig Bloody Mary (voted best bloody in the Mile High City by Svedka and 5280 Magazine) and I’d order a New Terrain “Golden Haze” IPA or maybe a Holidaily gluten-free beer.

To begin a perfect day in Golden, I would take a short hike up North Table Mountain to watch the sunrise. After, I would swing by Big Daddy Bagels to bring breakfast home and then gather the family for a walk along Clear Creek. We would visit the Golden History Museum & Park and pop in to the Golden Public Library.

We might stop at the Golden Community Center for a swim and some indoor climbing, before visiting a local sandwich shop for some delicious sandwiches to bring home.

I would fill the afternoon with a big run or hike from North Table to Mount Galbraith, then up Mount Zion, on to Lookout Mountain, over Apex Open Space, and then finally up South Table Mountain. Along the way, I might stop by Runners High, Golden’s running store, to swap running tales.

For dinner, we would visit the Buffalo Rose. After dinner, my wife and I would go for a quiet neighborhood stroll. Golden is a rare place, special for how civilization and nature sit side by side. I love that the natural world is so easy to access, I love the amenities that Golden offers, and I love the fact that Golden is such a friendly, forward-looking, community town. •

HIKING & BIKING CAPITAL OF THE FRONT RANGE Surrounded by mountains and mesas, Golden offers the best year-round hiking and biking opportunities in Metro Denver. Here are some top choices.

CLEAR CREEK TRAIL You can stretch your legs year-round on this paved trail that offers a pleasant stroll or bike ride up into Clear Creek Canyon or down to Denver. The level recreational trail stretches in one direction from downtown Golden to the South Platte River in Denver, 19 miles away. Or head west 1.5 miles into the towering rocks of Clear Creek Canyon.

In early 2021, the western route will extend an additional 1.75 miles into canyon with a thrilling new trail that clings to the edge of cliffs. Another four miles of this paved trail is now open, 12 miles west of Golden on Hwy. 6 at The Big Easy Trailhead.

There are three public restrooms available in Golden: Parfet Park (701 10th St.), Lions Park Ball Field (10th St. north of Clear Creek), and near the Astor House (822 12th St.). All have code locks that are automatically set to be unlocked from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

How can we get around?

If you do not have your own transportation, please consider the FlexRide Bus. Service is now offered every 15 minutes on the weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The City of Golden’s Bike Library, located to the west of the Visitors & Information Center, is open summer months and is free for the first two hours. Downtown Golden is walkable, but if you need to get to the other regions, we recommend using a ride-share service.

Is smoking allowed?

Downtown Golden is a smoke-free zone. Smoking in other regions is only allowed in designated areas.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, but all dogs must be leashed. There are off-leash dog parks located at Tony Grampsas Memorial Sports Complex and Ulysses Sports Complex if you want to let your furry friend run free.

Can we go tubing?

Yes, with proper personal flotation devices (life jacket) and tube. We also highly recommend using a helmet.
