Welcome to Golden!

IT’S NO WONDER Golden has a reputation as one of the West’s friendliest cities. Visit our historic downtown and you will be enthusiastically greeted by a welcome arch that reads, “Howdy, Folks! Welcome to Golden! Where the West Lives.” This perfectly captures the spirit of Golden, a friendly and forward-thinking city proud of its Western heritage.

We invite you to experience all Golden has to offer! First, stop and take a look around and marvel at the natural landscape. Golden is nestled between two volcanic mesas and against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains—at its center lies Clear Creek, with gorgeous walking paths. Golden has views in every direction, so be sure to relax and take in the sights.

The city is also home to the world’s largest single-site brewery, the Coors Brewery; the gravesite of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody; the esteemed Colorado School of Mines, a renowned university committed to teaching and research related to engineering and applied science; and attractions, such as the Colorado Railroad Museum and Dinosaur Ridge.

With coffee houses and brewpubs that invite you to linger, locally owned dining spots offering every type of fare and plenty of patios where you can enjoy the views with your meal, Golden is indeed a tasteful place to visit. Your only issue may be deciding just where to dine.

You’ll also have an abundance of culture to enjoy, with itty-bitty art scattered throughout town, colorful murals, a thriving visual arts center, newly expanded performing arts center and, of course, history at every turn.

And let’s not forget Golden’s worldclass recreation, with its craggy rock walls to climb, miles of bike trails, fly fishing, hiking trails and more. The town is also home to some of the top brands for outdoor gear, as well as art galleries, clothing stores and more.

Please enjoy all that Golden has to offer. While we’re only 20 minutes from downtown Denver, Golden can feel like a world away and is the closest option to experience the best of Colorado mountain culture.

Thank you for visiting Golden!

free & low‑cost family fun

Steam trains, dinosaurs, candy shops and cowboys, Golden serves as a haven for families seeking delightful and low‑cost adventures.

From scenic parks to historic landmarks, Golden has something for everyone. Kids can walk along Clear Creek or stop by the Golden History Park to feed the chickens. Thomas the Tank Engine and the Polar Express are regular visitors to the Colorado Railroad Museum, or visit at other times for a ride on the “Galloping Goose.”

Golden’s historic downtown is filled with shops serving ice cream, cupcakes and candy, or count the curves (Hint: there are 56) as you drive up the exciting Lariat Loop Trail to the very top of Lookout Mountain.

Throughout the year, Golden has family-friendly parades, festivals, family movie nights and art shows. Golden is the type of town where parents and grandparents don’t just sit on a bench and watch their kids play. It’s filled with immersive activities the entire family can enjoy together. Here are some ideas:

Take a Hike or Ride a Bike

The Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center has interactive exhibits about the deer, elk, racoons and even mountain lions and bears that live in Golden, as well as scenic nature trails. There are hiking trails up all five mountains that circle around Golden, or hike or bike for miles up into beautiful Clear Creek Canyon, crossing back and forth over the pretty creek on bridges, including a fun suspension bridge.

Hang Out With Buffalo Bill

The famous scout and showman is buried on top of Lookout Mountain with panoramic views of Denver and snow-capped peaks. At The Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave, kids can dress up like cowboys and cowgirls and learn about the Old West. Don’t forget to stop in the massive gift shop.

Search For Dinosaur Bones

The first dinosaur bones were discovered near Golden at Dinosaur Ridge. Today, you can hike or take a bus tour looking for hundreds of real dinosaur tracks along the way. The Triceratops Trail shows you where the first T-Rex bones were found, or visit the free Mines Museum of Earth Science, where you can learn about the geology that makes Golden special, enter a uranium mine and even see pieces of rock from the moon!

Play With Trains

The Colorado Railroad Museum has huge indoor and outdoor model railroads where the realistic toy engines sound just like the real thing. There are dozens of genuine cars, locomotives and cabooses on 15 acres ready to be explored. Climb into the cab of a steam locomotive and ring the bell! There are steam-ups, special events and train rides on a “Galloping Goose.”

Visit A Farm

The Golden History Park has a full historic creekside farm with a working blacksmith shop, barn, farmhouse and schoolhouse. Bring some quarters to feed the chickens! Or stop by the Golden History Museum where kids can enjoy a hands-on gallery. Admission is free.

Have A Snack Or Lunch On An Outdoor Patio With 300 sunny days a year, people in Golden live outdoors and there are more than two dozen restaurants with outdoor seating, many with mountain and creekside views. Or pick up a meal to go and have a picnic lunch at one of the picnic tables along Clear Creek. Leave room because downtown Golden has specialty shops selling ice cream, yogurt, cookies, cupcakes, candy and pastries!

Golden is the Sports Capital of Colorado’s Front Range

It’s not unusual in Golden to see bikers pedaling up a mountain, while hang gliders are floating down. Golden is the closest mountain town to Denver, just 12 miles from the State Capitol, and the historic town is surrounded by every type of outdoor recreation activity. Take your pick!

Hiking: The five mountains surrounding Golden all have trails to their summits, offering fantastic views. The famous “Peaks to Plains Trail” runs through the center of Golden, following beautiful Clear Creek from high up in the canyon all the way east to downtown Denver. Just a short drive away, you can hike through towering red sandstone monoliths at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, or enjoy the serene mountain beauty of Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

Biking: Golden is home to one of Colorado’s most iconic cycling routes: Lookout Mountain. In just 4.3 miles, the paved road climbs 1,300 feet, making 56 curves as it climbs to the 7,379-foot summit. Or try the exciting five-mile mountain biking loop around North Table Mountain. E-bike and bike rentals can be found along Clear Creek, where bike trails stretch up into the foothills or east to downtown Denver.

Rock Climbing: Right from downtown, you can walk to the Canal Zone in Clear Creek Canyon, while further up the canyon are Primo and Anarchy and other famous routes. Nearby Eldorado Canyon is known around the world for its sheer 600-foot-high rock walls. Never tried rock climbing? No worries! Golden has several indoor rock climbing and bouldering gyms that will help you get started.

Mountaineering: The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in downtown Golden is the first and only museum in the nation dedicated to the heroism, culture and spirit of mountaineering. See the clothes worn by the first Americans to summit Mount Everest, learn about Colorado’s 14ers, and experience the thrill of climbing the world’s highest peaks.

Hang Gliding: Golden is Colorado’s capital for recreational footlaunch hang gliding off 6,800-foot-high Mount Zion, letting you curl high above the town before gently landing by the Colorado School of Mines.

Fly Fishing: Clear Creek in Golden is one of the best fly-fishing spots on the Front Range. Right from downtown, you can walk to dozens of access points, while local fly-fishing shops have all the equipment you need, and can also provide guides to other nearby fly-fishing areas.

Snow Sports: In winter, Golden boasts excellent snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. At Golden Gate Canyon State Park, there are miles of trails through evergreen forests and aspen groves with beautiful views of snow-capped peaks in the distance. White Ranch has 20 miles of snow-covered winter trails.

Water Sports: Clear Creek flowing through Golden is one of the most popular rafting and kayaking centers in Colorado. Commercial rafts put in at nearby Idaho Springs. The lower portion of Clear Creek closer to Golden is a kayaking center with a dozen man-made chutes added for extra thrills.

Outfitting Shops: Golden started in 1858 as a supply town for people venturing into the mountains to search for gold, and today it serves the same purpose for people going to the hills for recreation. In Golden you will find stores specializing in every type of recreation from biking, hiking and fishing to rock climbing and kayaking. Experts in the recreation store of your choice will help you outfit and find nearby places to enjoy.

Golden is booming as a center for the visual and performing arts.

SOME OF THE biggest changes in Golden’s history are underway with the grand opening of two new, amazing downtown arts centers. The Miners Alley Performing Arts Center opened in late 2023, providing a much larger space for Golden’s critically acclaimed professional acting company. Located in a spacious former downtown hardware store, the new theater can easily seat 160 with plans to expand to 300. The large backstage area has state-of-the-art production capabilities for shows in 2024 that will include a wide variety of productions.

Directly across from Miners Alley Performing Arts Center, the historic Astor House Hotel, built in 1867, is being restored and doubled in size with a beautiful new architectural addition to become the exhibit space for Foothills Arts Center. Established in 1968, Foothills Arts Center is known for special exhibits throughout the year featuring everything from local Colorado artists to internationally famous works by people like Ansel Adams and Toulouse-Lautrec. The new center opens in spring 2024.

Even before these additions, historic Golden has always been known as a center for the arts with a half dozen museums and more than 40 public art works, including colorful

Western murals and statues. Golden also has a thriving gallery scene with an array of Western and First American artwork, and a reputation for live music offered in a variety of bars, beer gardens and at the legendary live music stage in the Buffalo Rose. And of course, Golden has the closest hotel base for the nearby world-famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

A great introduction to Golden’s art scene would begin with a stop at the Golden Welcome Center to pick up a free Public Art Walking Tour brochure. The guide will take you to murals of aspens, wild horses and Buffalo Bill and to statues of cowboys, miners, bison and even the town’s most famous resident, Adolph Coors. Families can pick up a brochure of “ittybitty art” works — small, kid-sized art treasures hidden all over town.

For a more spiritual experience, on a mountaintop above Golden is the Mother Cabrini Shrine, a 22-foot-high statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a beautiful setting with views of mountains and plains. And of course, Golden’s natural location is a “work of art” as well, so be sure to look around you to enjoy the beauty of the mountains and mesas surrounding Golden and offering gorgeous views at every turn!

GET YOUR WESTERN ON

in GOLDEN

As our iconic Golden Arch states, Golden is “Where the West Lives!” From horseback rides and Western wear to historic tours and All‑American eats, Golden is your hub for all things Western.

Kickstart a Western day at a local café with a cowboy coffee and a good old fashioned breakfast. After fueling up, get ready for a day of Western fun with new attire from one of Golden’s Western wear shops. You can find everything from classic cowboy hats and boots to unique Western-themed accessories. While you’re out shopping, visit an antique shop and go on the hunt for unique Western relics. You can also marvel at Native American and Western art at one of the art galleries in town.

If you’re feeling up for a history lesson, embark on a Wild West Walking Tour with Golden History Tours. Perfect for the whole family, you can learn all about Golden’s history and its ties to the Wild Wild West. For a more grown-up experience, slip on your boots and head out for the Wild West Pub Crawl. Discover three local breweries while sipping on delicious local brews. For another Western history destination, head to the railroad museum to discover the

machinery that made the Old West what it was. Explore the museum grounds and see the historic and iconic engines up close; you can even climb aboard for a ride!

Experience Golden like the Cowboys did, on horseback exploring the terrain with their majestic sidekicks. During the summer months, saddle up for a guided horseback trail ride. There are local stables that offer guided rides perfect for the whole family. Golden is home to several horseback riding trails that will take your breath away with stunning views.

After exploring Golden’s All‑American main street, meander up the scenic Lariat Loop Trail to the top of Lookout Mountain to experience the views of the West. Once you make it to the top, you can visit the grave of a well-known cowboy. Buffalo Bill is one of Colorado’s most famous cowboys who was not only a soldier but also a hunter and Wild-West showman. There, you can learn

all about his life and the wild adventures he went on. The museum also features rifles owned by Annie Oakley, the headdress of Sitting Bull and much more. On the other side of Lookout Mountain, you can also catch a glimpse of real live bison at the buffalo herd overlook. The city of Denver maintains a herd of over 40 bison in this scenic location, making for one-of-a-kind Western photos.

Round off your Western day with some classic barbeque accompanied by live music. While enjoying your meal, wet your whistle with a crisp beer; the drink of the Cowboys, made right here in Golden.

With so much to do and see, Golden truly is the home of the West. Planning a day chock full of Western history and activities is no hard feat in this classic Western town. As the sun sets at the end of a fun-filled day, you can put up your feet and know that you enjoyed a true Western experience in the town “Where the West Lives.”

Hiking Trails

The Toast of the Town in Golden

GOLDEN IS SURROUNDED by six mountains, all of which have hiking trails that lead to spectacular views of snow-covered peaks and the high plains of Metro Denver. And what could be better after a hike than sitting in an outdoor beer garden, sipping a craft brew and looking up at the peak you just climbed? The map on the opposite page shows just some of the hiking trails around Golden. Here are some popular options and afterwards, toast to your adventure with friends at a Golden brewery!

Peaks to Plains Trail

Don’t feel like climbing a mountain? No worries! The Peaks to Plains Trail (also known in town as the Clear Creek Trail) is nearly flat and follows the beautiful river west up into a scenic canyon of sheer cliffs. The year-round, family-friendly trail is paved or hard gravel and crosses Clear Creek on several bridges. The trail can be accessed from the Welcome Center in downtown Golden or from two massive parking areas with restrooms on Highway 6 just west of Golden.

Lookout Mountain and Mount Zion

The highest and most prominent mountain that towers above Golden is Lookout Mountain. There is a high spur to the north called Mount Zion, which is where the giant white rock ‘M’ for the Colorado School of Mines is built. Each

year, new students climb up and place a white rock on the geoglyph, while graduating students hike up and remove one as a treasured souvenir. You can follow their path on a series of trails that climb both peaks. Most scenic is the Windy Saddle Trail which begins halfway up Lookout Mountain Road and switchbacks through pine forests to Buffalo Bill’s Grave and the Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center. Back in town, almost all beer gardens and cafés have a view of the two peaks.

North Table Mountain

Another landmark of Golden is this broad, flat-topped mesa that rises hundreds of feet above Clear Creek Valley to the north and is ringed by cliffs. You can hike to its summit on a hiker-only trail called Lichen Peak, or hike or bike on the 5.9-mile loop trail that goes completely around the mesa.

South Table Mountain and Castle Rock

The iconic view of Golden is the prominent high volcanic rock butte that sits above Coors Brewery named Castle Rock*. It has been featured on their logo for 150 years. The hike is short and steep, but pays wonderful dividends with the best views of downtown Golden. The very first T-Rex dinosaur bones were discovered here. The butte is visible from almost every beer garden and outdoor café in town.

*Castle Rock is private property. Do not trespass.

The views won’t disappoint and afterwards you can enjoy happy hour or dinner on a Golden patio or tucked into a cozy restaurant.

Live Music, Game Nights and Trivia Nights

Many Golden restaurants and taverns offer weekly live music and trivia nights. Listen to local tunes or test your date’s knowledge of random facts at a local trivia night. Or match wits and challenge your date with one of the more than 300 games at Golden Game Guild, a great date destination.

Dinner and a Show

Make an early reservation at your favorite Golden restaurant and then head to the Miners Alley Performing Arts Center to catch a show at the newly-renovated downtown theater. It’s a comfortable, intimate setting that has a great community feel and a wonderful lobby bar for a pre-show drink, too.

Tour Time!

Golden has tours of all kinds, from self-guided walking tours of local public art and murals to the Golden Hayride, which winds through town stopping at local taverns. You can also learn about Golden history with Golden History Tours and let’s not forget Golden’s most famous tour, the Coors Brewery Tour, where you and your date can learn about the history and passion of this brewing legend and if aged 21+, enjoy samples of fresh beer.
