The mask that hides

Don't be fooled by me Don't be fooled by the face I wear I wear a thousand masks, masks that I'm afraid to take off, and none of them are me

I give the Impress1on that I'm secure, That all is sunny and unruffled w1th1n as well as without That confidence Is my name and coolness Is my game, that the water Is calm and I need no one But don't believe me please

My surface may seem smooth, but my surface Is a mask. Beneath swells the real me, In co nfu sion, In fear, In aloneness But I try to hide this I panic at the thought of my weakne ss and frantically c reate a mask to hide behind, to shield me from the glance that knows.

Yet, such a glance Is precisely my salvation, I know It If It' s followed by acceptance and love, It Is the only thing that will assure me of what 1 can't assure myself, that I am worth somet hing

But, I don't tell you this, I don't dare, I'm afraid to.

So, I play my game, my despara t e game, with a f acade of assurance without, and a trembling c hi ld w1th1n. So begins the parade of masks, and my life becomes a front.

I idly chatter to you surface and top of the head talk, saying nothing of what Is crying w1th1n me Please listen carefully and try to hear what I am not saying, what I'd like to be able to say, but what I cannot say.

I d1sl1ke hiding, honestly I would really like to be genuine and spontaneous and me, but you've got to help me You 've got to hold out your hand, even when that 's the last thing I seem to want.

Each time you're kind and gentle, my heart grows wings, very small wings, very feeble wings, but wings With your sensItIvIty and EMPATHY and your power of understanding, you can breathe life into me I want you to know that.

You can help me be the creator of the person that Is me, 1f you choose to You can break down the wall and release me from behind my mask, my shadow world of panic and uncertainty, from my lonely self Don't pass me by

I may fight against the very help I need But try to beat those w alls down, with gentle hands of love and EMPATHY firm, but gentle hands, for a child 1s very sensItIve

Who am I, you may w onder. I AM ME

Homecoming 1978,

behind scenes report

Events galore were the h1ghl1ght this year as students part1c1pated 1n act1v1t1es throughout the Homecoming week Beg1nn1ng with the trad1t1onal hall decorations, the seniors proved their creative superiority by grabbing first place, followed by the sophomores and Juniors, who, despite their enthusiasm, could not keep the seniors from gaining the honors of winner of class compet1t1on Compet1t1on between classes though was hard up to match the thr i ll of victory displayed by the English Department upon announcement of their first place 1n the faculty part1c1pat1on " Golden Goose" skits Their original rend i tion, centered upon the theme of "Rocky", beat out the other departments amusing and gallant efforts for top spot.

Both students and faculty had a chance for craziness as the GHS campus was transported to the Old West where gunfights and saloon girls were a common sight 1n every classroom, only to be replaced by bobby socks and slicked down hair as a wave of nostalgia transformed students into jitterbugging teeny -boppers of the 50 's Maroon and white were the colors of the day as the carefully decorated floats paraded through the streets of Golden and on to the game against the Arvada Redskins

The sophomores proved victorious 1n the float compet1t1on and, despite Golden's loss to Arvada 6 -23, the Demons failed to lose their spirit as the Homecoming week ended with the success of the Homecoming dance at the Mines student center. Music was provided by "Airborne" Reigning over the Homecoming week were Queen Debbie Tarbox and her court Lisa Cane and Jeannine Davis Junior and sophomore attendants were Eve Anthony and Tammy Reeves.

No holiday for Amy Carter's birthday?

Holidays are an important aspect of any high school. The same 1s true of Golden High Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, and even St . Patrick's Day, play a large part 1n the extra -curricular action This year among the festiv1t1es were a masquerade ball, Christmas Week, Turkey Week, and two Valentine's dances. Elections were held during each holiday, and royalty was crowned Debbie Tarbox and Charlie Gaines were named Valentine's King and Queen, and class Turkeys were Don King, Joe Beck and Vernon Dugger.

Brother Can You Spare A Dime?

Among the exciting act1v1t1es this year, was the tedious quest for money Fund ra1s1ng was the number one priority on peoples minds this year The year opened with the band sell Ing chocolate bars, and coupon books to finance their venturous trip to Washington D.C. in March Following the band's attempt to raise money, was the Sophomore class These underclassmen peddled M&M's throughout a good part of the year The Tridettes also Joined the ranks of the fund raisers with their stationary and Jolly Rancher candies Another large money raiser was the Soccer team, who vended their Golden High School mugs, to the unsuspecting student body Among other noted fund raisers were the Hero club who filled our stomachs with fresh donuts in the mornings, FBLA, with bake sales, Junior and Senior classes, Deca, and Heo As a result of this huge quest for cash, the KBTV Vs Golden High Basketball game was a successful money ra1s1ng attempt, with the profits going to the Junior class.

1978: What Will We Remembe r?

Deaths of loved idols and births of new trends filled both the papers and our lifestyles In the year of 1977 -78 . Few people will forget the faces of Bing Crosby, Sebastian Cabot, Groucho Marx, Hubert Humphrey, Charlie Chaplin, and Elvis Presley, whose expression of words , music, and social ImpressIon will survive long after the grief of their death Is forgotten. New faces also were headlined this year as Jimmy Carter con tinued to gain the public's attention dealing with such issues as Sadat's trip, the canal treaty, and ou r cont inued involvement with the Middle East The new fem1n1sts movement also gained the public attention as women met to discuss their views on the E.R.A , abortion, and w omens' rights Anita Bryant, however, seemed to be the 1nfluent1al w oman of the year, as her stand against gays and gay lib brought on such controversy that they topped even Farrah Fawcett sto nes In the news media.

Orange Crush, few Denventes and fans live that do not know that familiar phrase that brought their beloved football team to the Super Bo wl , for the first time ever Even those not involved at first were caug ht up In the booming "mania" of T - shir t s, mugs, posters, trash ca ns , and everything 1mag1nable painted with the now familiar orange and blue of the Broncos

Streets were devoid of traffic every Sunday afternoor. People from August to January talked of nothing but team ta ctics and statistics, and even with the loss of Denver to Dallas on Super Bowl Sunday, the still ecstatic Den ver fans screamed on for their Orange Crush Team, maybe not # 1 In the nations eyes, but certainly a winner to the fans of the most supported team of the NFL

If Sunday afternoons were spent In front of the telev1sIon screen, Saturday was certainly the day to go see the most successful picture of all time, Star Wars Grossing over 21 million dollars In box office sales alone, the movie has had a def1n1te impact on both the movie industry and the public itself

28

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind " followed soon after and 1t too is beginning to make box office records of its own . This new trend of pure fantasy and fun 1s sure to sti ck around, bringing quite a contrast to the real1st1 c movies of the past few years

But this is merely our environment, our surroundings, are they the reflection of our lifestyle? For wh o 1s the graduate of the class of 78? Unlike the silent 50's or the rebellious 60's, the 70's contains no stereotype of todays youth, except perhaps a d1st1nct ind1v1dual1sm of every single person and their every lifestyle It 1s no longer possible to label the average teenager of the time. The only thing that co uld possibly be a stereotype of the 70's 1s the constant fasc1nat1on of the nostalgia of the past few decades, who unlike our generation, s hared common goals , ideas , and even music Tru e there are certain trends that we might look back on such as: Feather hair cuts, painter pants, down vests, frozen

yogurt, tee -shirts w ith sayings, Jeans, frisbees , thong sa ndal s, Farrah Fawcett posters , Frye boots , M cDonalds, bubble gum and CB radios But even the top rock group 1n the country 1s still the Beatles , followed closely by Ki ss, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac to name a few Even our favorite expressions are 1nd1v1dual and vary to each person's o wn ideas-Some of the most predominant being : Fantastic, all right, get down , neat, cool, great, frve, super, may the force be with you, oh wo w, far out, twit, tough, and w ith the influen c e of Steve Martin , I'm Just a rambltn man, and let ' s get small This , our lifestyle, taken perhaps for granted by those who live 1t, s t imula te s not only our own memories but the interest of those wh o follow, wh en the class of the next decade looks back and asks, "What was 1t really like to live 1n our decade, wh o wa s the graduate of the class of 78?

Excitement and the scent of magnolia blossoms filled the air at the "Spring Cot1ll1on" at the Green Center May 13 Debbie Tarbox and Mike Wirth reigned over the fest1v1t1es with court cons1st1ng of Sarah Spaulding , Nancy Pattndge, Charlie Garnes, Don King and Dana Wunderlich

Foreign Language

Students in the Foreign Language classes are using the language lab more this year than ever before This 1s no doubt due to the fact that some great improvements have been made In the facility First there Is a new listen Ing console so that students can hear tapes In three languages The headsets are wireless transistors so the students can move around freely Secondly a kitchen fac1l1ty has been installed, so that foreign foods can be prepared by the French, German, and Spanish classes With the add1t1on of a couch and a coke machine, the atmosphere Is very InvIt1ng to students, who are found In the lab every hour of the day1 Also, the uniqueness of each classroom, guarantees variety
