Protect Our Water: Clear Creek is both a recreation area and a critical drinking water source. Pack out all trash and avoid polluting the creek.
Stay on Designated Access Points: Use marked entry/exit spots and avoid disturbing creek banks to prevent erosion and protect habitat.
Leave No Trace: Dispose of all trash in the proper receptacles. Skip hammocks, chairs, and anything that damages vegetation along the banks.
Plan Ahead: Set clear meeting points in case your group gets separated.
Secure Your Gear: Tie down or leave valuables on shore, loose items often end up lost in the creek.
Know the Conditions: Clear Creek isn’t a lazy river; it can be swift and powerful, especially after rainfall. Check flow conditions and flag warnings, as the water can be fast, cold, and unpredictable.
Wear Safety Gear: Life jackets are strongly encouraged, especially for tubing or weaker swimmers.
Exit at Designated Points: Tubers must exit no later than Vanover Park.

The Lariat Loop® Byway is a 40-mile route where you can retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s and experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars. Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains still have sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides to refresh and delight the traveler.
This byway is a combination of two historic routes: the Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive ascending Lookout Mountain and the Bear Creek Canyon Scenic Mountain Drive. In combination, these routes were part of several of the “scenic circles” developed and promoted by Denver in 1915-1920s to help Coloradans experience the mountains in proximity to the Denver Metropolitan area. These roadways were designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The Lariat Loop® Byway takes its name from the historic LARIAT TRAIL, a 5-mile road from Golden up the front of Lookout Mountain to Buffalo Bill’s Museum and Grave. The Lariat Trail was built by “Cement Bill” in 1913. It has quite an entertaining and interesting history, not the least of which is that when the City of Denver owed Bill money for his work on the road, he put up a blockade at the Golden entrance. He let in all travelers except those with Denver license plates – until the City of Denver finally paid him back!
Don’t miss the Bison Overlook at the I-70 exit 254. There’s a parking lot to pull into to take photos of the high mountain peaks to the west. There may be a bison herd nearby. If so, you can’t miss them!

The highest point on Lookout Mountain is 7,500 feet.
Visitors come to Golden to experience the “Wild West” spirit of Colorado’s Gold Rush era in the late 1850s and 1860s, when prospectors moved through the foothills seeking fortune. The city is named for Thomas L. Golden, a prospector who worked claims in the area during that early mining period. While Golden never became a major boomtown, it grew into a lasting gateway to the mountains along Clear Creek.
That history still shapes the city today. Golden’s welcome arch reads “Where the West Lives,” reflecting a community rooted in frontier heritage and mountain culture. Gold panning is not permitted within the city limits today, though small traces
of placer gold may still be found farther upstream in the Clear Creek watershed, a reminder of the region’s geology and mining past.
The Old West spirit continues through experiences like the Wild West Walking Tour and downtown shops featuring Western goods, Native American art, antiques, and regional stones and fossils.
Just beyond downtown, Clear Creek Canyon offers cliffs, rushing water, and historic routes carved through the foothills. Nearby, Golden Gate Canyon State Park provides thousands of acres of forests, trails, and mountain views that preserve the rugged landscape early settlers encountered.
History also stretches far deeper in time at Dinosaur Ridge, where fossils continue to emerge. The foothills also connect to the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve, each highlighting Colorado’s layered natural and cultural story.
And Red Rocks Amphitheatre began hosting performances in the early 1900s and officially opened as a naturally formed sandstone amphitheater in 1941, becoming one of the most iconic open-air music venues in the world.

The defining silhouette of Golden’s skyline is the massive, flat-topped mesa of South Table Mountain. While the prominent Castle Rock formation at the cliff’s edge is a beloved landmark, the best way to experience the mesa is via the Jeffco Open Space trail system. Hike the Lubahn Trail or the Shoshonite Trail for steep climbs to connecting trails that pay dividends with panoramic, bird’s-eye views of the town and the high plains. This site also holds a unique place in history: the first Tyrannosaurus Rex teeth in the fossil record were discovered on these slopes in 1874.
A true landmark of the valley, this broad mesa rises hundreds of feet above the north side of town. To reach the highest point, follow the North Table Loop to the short, hiker-only Lichen Peak trail for 360-degree views of the Front Range. Hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy the full loop, which circumnavigates the mesa for approximately 8 miles, offering dramatic cliff-side vistas and frequent wildlife sightings, including mule deer and golden eagles.
Towering above Golden, Lookout Mountain is the area's highest peak. Its northern spur, Mount Zion, features the historic white rock “M,” a cherished geoglyph for the Colorado School of Mines. Hikers can access these slopes from the west side of town via the Chimney Gulch Trail, a rigorous climb with expansive views, or start at Windy Saddle Park to take the Mount Zion Trail directly above the "M." For a gentler, shaded experience through pine forests, follow the Lookout Mountain Trail to connect attractions along the mountain and view even larger westward mountain peaks.
Looking for a more level journey? The Clear Creek Trail offers a nearly flat, paved path that follows the rushing water west into a scenic canyon. For a more historic perspective, explore the hiker-only Welch Ditch wooden boardwalk section, which hugs the canyon wall and provides an elevated view of the creek below. This year-round, family-friendly trail is accessible directly from downtown Golden or the Gateway Trailhead on Highway 6, offering a way to enjoy rugged canyon beauty without a strenuous vertical climb.

Arrive and get your bearings
Walk to Washington Avenue, where the historic Welcome Arch announces, with complete sincerity: Howdy Folks, Welcome to Golden. It is corny. You will love it anyway. Stroll the main drag, duck into the boutiques and gear shops, then follow the sound of water to Clear Creek, where locals cold plunge in winter, wade in summer, and fish in between. The creek is the town's living room.

Dinner at the Old Capitol Grill
The Old Capitol Grill occupies the building where Colorado's territorial legislature convened in the 1860s. Order the bison burger and a Coors Barmen Pilsner, a rare German-style beer with a signature sevenminute pour available at only a handful of spots. Your meal is historically significant. Act accordingly.

A show at Miners Alley Performing Arts Center
Miners Alley stages professional productions in a venue intimate enough that every seat feels like the best one. Book ahead because it sells out, and plan to leave wondering why you do not go to the theater more often. Golden has a way of doing that to people.

Head south of downtown to Bonfire Burritos for scratch-made breakfast burritos stuffed with house-smoked meats, pasture-raised eggs, and Colorado green chile. A brief note on that green chile: thick, smoky, slightly spicy, and a completely non-negotiable smothering sauce. Best in this state. Order ahead online.

Hike South Table Mountain
South Table Mountain's volcanic flat-topped mesa and Castle Rock formation define the Golden skyline. Several trailheads are scattered throughout the South Golden neighborhood. Read the parking signs carefully because spots vanish fast on weekends. The views from the top sweep across town and out to the high plains. Bring water, start early, and mind the rattlesnakes. They were here first.
A converted grain mill along Clear Creek and one of Golden's best arguments for a long lunch. Sample your way through the food hall vendors, then settle into the outdoor beer garden or rooftop patio with a self-poured Colorado craft drink. No agenda necessary.

Colorado Railroad Museum
Sitting on 15 acres just northeast of downtown, the Colorado Railroad Museum packs in locomotives, rail cars, and narrowgauge history from Colorado's mountain railroading era. You will plan for 30 minutes and leave two hours later. The outdoor rail yard alone justifies the stop.

A portion of the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway winds up Lookout Mountain on the same switchbacks motorists have navigated since the 1920s. The Buffalo Bill Museum closes at 5 p.m. and deserves its own dedicated visit, though the overlook there and road stay open until an hour after sunset. The views are, to put it plainly, unfair: Denver to the east, Boulder to the north, and to the west, snow-capped peaks that have no business looking that good from a parking lot.

Dinner at Abejas
Abejas is a warmly lit bistro just off Washington Avenue where the menu changes with the seasons, the cocktails spotlight local craft distilleries, and the food has a way of stopping conversation midsentence. The cozy interior feels like exactly the right place to end a full day. Make a reservation.

Nightcap at The Down Low
Golden's best-kept open secret is a sleek billiards lounge tucked below street level on Washington Avenue with craft cocktails, Colorado beers on tap, pool tables, and premium slate tables. It feels like a discovery every time.

One last adventure
Follow Clear Creek west from downtown along the Clear Creek Trail into the canyon, a nearly flat paved path that grows more dramatic with every mile. Canyon walls rise around you, bridges cross the rushing water, and rock staircases drop to the creek's edge for those who cannot resist a closer look. Keep an eye out for climbers on the canyon walls above and raptors working the thermals overhead. It is a lot to take in before breakfast. That is entirely the point.

Breakfast at Babe's Tea Room
Babe's Tea Room is the correct final stop, and not just because it is steps from the creek. The creekside patio, fresh-baked scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, and a menu of more than 90 loose-leaf teas add up to a morning that has absolutely no interest in being rushed. Neither should you. Order something warm, watch the water move, and let Golden do what it does best.
