Dear Neighbors, When we think about what makes Germantown such a remarkable place to live, work and raise a family, it always comes back to our people. Our city is more than just a collection of beautiful neighborhoods and thriving businesses. It’s a tightly woven fabric built on deep connections, shared history and mutual support. In short, Germantown is deeply “Rooted in Community.” In this issue of Germantown Magazine, we’re proud to celebrate the individuals, organizations and local traditions that anchor our city and make it feel like home. As you flip through these pages, you’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the dedicated volunteers on our Neighborhood Preservation Commission, who work tirelessly to keep our residential areas engaged and informed. You’ll also find a personal "What I've Learned" feature, where Mayor Mike shares reflections on decades of public service and community leadership. Music has always been part of Germantown's heartbeat, and our "Rooted in Music" story highlights the incredible local sounds and talent enriching our cultural landscape. We also explore the favorite local spots where neighbors

gather, catch up and form friendships in our "Where Do People Hang?" feature. In addition to celebrating our current success, we take time to recognize excellence and honor our history. We are thrilled to highlight this year's local business award winners, whose entrepreneurial spirit keeps our economy strong. Finally, we share a heartfelt tribute in remembrance of Charles Speed, the longtime owner of Germantown Lumber Co., whose legacy of service and local business leadership left an indelible mark on our city. Whether you’ve lived here for decades or recently moved to town, we hope this issue inspires you to reflect on what makes our city so special. Thank you for being an active part of our story and for keeping Germantown deeply rooted in community. Warmest regards,
Mike Palazzolo Mayor City of Germantown

THE OPTICAL BOUTIQUE FAMILY EYECARE Does your child’s vision keep getting worse every year? It’s not just a vision problem. Strong prescriptions can cause eye health problems like retinal detachment and glaucoma. Slowing down the progression of nearsightedness can help reduce these risks Every year, millions of kids find their far-away vision getting blurrier. Even when they wear glasses or contacts, it doesn’t stop it from getting worse. There are some special options that can slow it down, such as: Special eyeglass lenses, specialized contact lenses and corneal molding. Almost half of the children in the US are myopic now, much more than a couple decades ago. Regular glasses and contact lenses don’t do much to keep it from worsening. We’ve been helping slow down the progression of nearsightedness in kids for many years.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD PRESERVATION COMMISSION By Erinn Figg Photography by Brad Villane
Each year at the City’s free Annual Neighborhood Summit, residents gather to socialize, browse local business booths, sample food, sip wine and listen as City representatives update them on the latest local happenings. It’s a bustling event that traditionally attracts more than 200 attendees who are there to meet new neighbors, visit with old friends and celebrate living in Germantown. Many residents might not know that, behind the scenes, the Neighborhood Preservation Commission (NPC) has been planning the summit for months, handling everything from selecting the theme to booking the speakers and coordinating with local businesses. “This year, our theme is Thriving Together, which ties in with the City’s new Thrive Germantown 2050 Comprehensive Plan,” NPC Chair Ellen Bernstein says. “In addition, we’ll be awarding the coveted Neighborhood of the Year, Neighbor of the Year and Neighborhood Leader of the Year awards.” This year’s event will take place Tuesday, September 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at The Great Hall & Conference Center.
“Strong neighborhoods build strong communities,” Bernstein says. “Our core mission in the NPC is to help strengthen neighborhoods by providing opportunities to connect, learn and maintain the quality of life that Germantown is known for. From awarding the City’s annual Neighborhood Grants and reviewing City ordinances to hosting the annual summit and Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes, the NPC encourages homeowners to take pride in their neighborhoods, which benefits the entire community.”
Beyond the annual summit, the 12-member NPC works year-round to foster meaningful connections between local neighborhoods and City leaders.
Through the yearly Tour of Remodeled Homes and Landscapes, the commission inspires residents to invest in property values, while the Neighborhood Grants program

provides funding for projects centered on safety, beautification and community engagement. Each spring, an NPC subcommittee carefully evaluates grant applications, ultimately selecting the winners of the $25,000 in available grants. “Every year, we receive dozens of applications,” Bernstein says. “We wish we had the funds to award all of them.” The Village of Wicklow is one of the neighborhoods that received a grant in 2025, specifically $2,500 to update the lamp fixtures in the 72-home community. “At the time, our original 45-yearold light posts and fixtures were well beyond their expected life, and replacing them was financially out of reach,” says Wicklow HOA President Mary Harvey Gurley. “We used the grant as seed money to begin
renovating all of our 75 light posts, fixtures and garage door lights. Work began immediately after the grant was awarded and was completed in June 2026.” Also on the NPC’s agenda are the Neighborhood Leaders Socials, small gatherings where neighborhood association members connect with each other and City staff. “Meeting face-to-face with City officials to learn about upcoming events and developments is far more engaging than reading updates online,” Bernstein says. “This is why our Neighborhood Leaders Socials have become so popular. These gatherings offer a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from City officials, including the Mayor and Code Enforcement, and to ask questions. They also provide a relaxed setting for mingling with fellow neighborhood leaders.”
The ultimate goal of all the NPC’s work is to give local homeowners a variety of avenues through which to make their voices heard. “The City of Germantown is staffed by dedicated professionals who want to hear from residents,” Bernstein says. “Their most recent initiative, Thrive Germantown 2050, has evolved with the help of interested citizens who care about the City and want to see it continue to grow and thrive. There are plenty of opportunities for residents to have their voices heard through commissions or just by contacting the City.” ■ The NPC meets on the third Thursday evening of each month. To attend a meeting and share input during the Citizens to be Heard portion, contact Community Engagement Coordinator Erinn Figg at EFigg@Germantown-TN. gov or (901) 757-7203. Germantown Magazine

LEAD ER SHI P
What I’ve Learned Mayor Mike Palazzolo As told to Stephanie Painter Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
After 30 years as a public servant, including 12 as Mayor of Germantown, 2026 will mark the last of Mayor Mike Palazzalo’s public service. Germantown Magazine sat down with the outgoing Mayor to reflect on his time, the challenges of being in the public eye and the opportunities ahead for the city.
My family keeps me humble, and I’ve always leaned on the wisdom of trusted mentors. When a hard decision faces the City, it’s never about one person’s ego or opinion; it comes from countless quiet conversations with the people who call Germantown home. That shared consensus makes even the heaviest choices easier to carry.
When I look back to 1996 and graduating from that inaugural Leadership Germantown class, I never set out with ambition to be an alderman, let alone mayor. I was just a neighbor who loved this town and wanted to give back. Over three decades, my journey unfolded naturally, guided by the wisdom of our community leaders, chamber members and great mentors like Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy.
Securing local control of our schools and creating our own municipal school district will touch generations to come. It requires an incredible investment of time, heart and community resources, but securing quality public education is always worth the sacrifice. Drawing from my early days as a teacher, I’ve always known that dedicated parents, community support and proper investment are what make a school system truly exemplary.
The biggest difference today isn't in how I view Germantown, but in how deeply humbled I am by the journey. I started out as an eager volunteer, and I leave with a heart full of gratitude for the neighbors, mentors and City fathers and mothers who patiently showed me the way.
Sometimes the smallest acts of service bring the deepest quiet pride. Years ago, our city administrator, team members and I were driving around checking on our City’s 'windshield appeal'. We spotted a simple fallen garbage receptacle and realized there wasn't a dedicated team to catch those minor details. Out of that ride, the First Impressions Team (FIT) was born. Today, they quietly straighten signs, repaint faded crosswalks, pressure wash City buildings and keep our town shining. They’ve quietly resolved over 1,700 little items.
"Every single act of service, no matter how small, keeps the heart of our City beating."
Coming from a private sector banking background, I naively thought municipal government could pivot on a dime. In those early days, I felt that familiar, eager frustration when wonderful ideas gathered straight from neighbors took far longer to implement than expected.
I was wrong to think that speed equaled success. I quickly learned that local government moves methodically by design. And that patient, deliberate process is actually what protects our community’s high standards and ensures every resident’s voice is honored before a single shovel hits the dirt. When making difficult decisions, you stay grounded by remembering that you are simply a caretaker for the people you serve. For me, it meant staying connected to the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. We are blessed with strong neighborhood associations, constituency groups and a long-term strategic plan built alongside our residents around nine guiding principles.
16 Germantown Magazine
If you care for the small things, the big things tend to take care of themselves. Seeing that team work makes me just as proud as securing our schools. Leadership comes down to three humble steps: listen first, learn always and lead with a servant's heart, strictly in that order. A mayor’s true privilege is simply bringing people to the table. Once you truly listen and learn, you can convene the right neighbors and staff to solve the problem or serve the community together. You don't need to be a politician to serve; you just need to love your hometown. Germantown’s success has never been built on politicians. It’s built on citizenservants. Community kindness is embedded right into our strategic plan and there are countless ways to lend a hand. You can start in your HOA, your church, a local
civic club or check Volunteer Germantown. Programs like Leadership Germantown bring together 19-year-olds and 78-year-olds alike to learn from each other. Every single act of service, no matter how small, keeps the heart of our City beating. Citizen involvement is so vital to protecting the soul of the City. Shakespeare famously asked, ‘What is the city but its people?’ and that couldn't be truer for us. We live in the Volunteer State, but Germantown's spirit is truly extraordinary. We are so fortunate to have residents who are top-tier CFOs, engineers and business leaders step up to serve on our City commissions. They generously lend us their professional brilliance purely out of love for their City. That selfless volunteer spirit isn't just helpful; it is the very soul of our community.
The best spot in Germantown to think through a difficult problem is… Walking quietly through one of our beautiful neighborhood parks. The key to a good public meeting… Is to speak last, especially as mayor. When you let everyone else share first, you ensure every voice in the room was truly heard. The one thing people don't realize about being mayor is… Just how much time it takes, and the unique blessings that come with it, like officiating 233 weddings over the years. I always carry a box of tissues because I get so emotional sharing in their joy. I’m happy to report I’m still 233-0 on happily married couples! What I'm looking forward to most on my first Monday morning after retiring is… Having a simple, peaceful dinner with my family at a normal hour. After a lifetime of late-night board meetings, sitting down to eat early will be a sweet change of pace.
Whether it’s helping fix a park field or quietly resolving a noise issue for a family, you can't fully grasp the joy of simple neighborly service until you experience it firsthand. And sometimes, remarkable community treasures grow out of the simplest moments. The Grove at GPAC came from a case study idea I shared at a conference about an unused patch of land near GPAC. Through a wonderful blend of state support, City investment and generous private donors, this beautiful space came to life. Seeing our families enjoy events there today is a serendipitous blessing I will cherish forever. My advice for the next mayor is to keep a humble heart and remember you are just one small part of an incredible team. We are blessed with an exceptional City staff who live out our motto of excellence every single day. Support them, trust their expertise and rely on their dedication. They won't let you or this City down. My heart is so full of hope because the foundation we've built together is remarkably strong. Our Leadership Germantown pipeline continues to cultivate bright, community-minded leaders. Our neighborhoods are active and caring and our dedicated City employees are well-prepared to carry our standard of premier service forward. Germantown's best days are ahead. ■

How to Prepare for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period
As you know from watching TV or going to your mailbox, October 15th to December 7th is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). With all of the clutter, it can be difficult for Medicare beneficiaries to know what this time of year really means for them. Here’s what to know to ensure you’re prepared for this year’s AEP: 1. Your Medicare Benefits May Not Stay the Same Every year in January, your Medicare benefits renew. You might think if you make no changes to your plan, you will receive the exact same benefits, but this is not always the case. Insurance companies review and make changes to their plans yearly, so your benefits may look different when January comes around. We recommend taking a look at your benefits every year to make sure your healthcare and budget needs are taken into account should there be any changes to your plan. 2. Make Sure Your Drugs Remain Covered on Your Part D As insurance companies are doing annual reviews and making changes to their plans, your Part D coverage may be impacted. Check the updated list of covered drugs for your plan so you don’t end up with an unfortunate surprise at the pharmacy next year.
Scan the QR code on this page to visit our website, or go to www.deltabenefitsgroup.com
3. Keep Your Medicare Costs in Check Just like your coverage can change from year to year, so can your Medicare costs. AEP is a good time to check in on your Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Part D costs. Your plan will provide you with an Annual Notice of Change letter that will detail any coverage and cost fluctuations of which to be aware. These letters will usually be available ahead of AEP. 4. Review Your Plan with Our Trusted Medicare Experts Medicare is a complex system. We offer free consultations to our clients where we will sit down with you to review your plan and assess your current needs. Healthcare and budget needs change from year to year, and they are different for every person on Medicare. At Delta Benefits Group, we understand that your plan should be tailored to you– not the other way around. Give us a call at 901-460-7220 to schedule your free AEP appointment today and ensure you’re getting the most out of your Medicare benefits.

A.D. DAVIS A fixture at Germantown Athletic Club for more than 20 years, DJ A.D. DAVIS didn't set out to become a DJ. She curated playlists for her fitness classes, known for their fun and unique sets, but in 2015, something clicked. "It's almost hard to believe it's been this long since I started DJing outside of my den," she says. Davis draws from a wide palette: 1970s and 1980s classics, 1990s and early 2000s pop, hip-hop, rock, blues and house music. She also loves techhouse genres and has done full yacht rock sets. Genre depends on the room and the vibe she wants to create. Her selections shift based on the event and the crowd.

THREE GERMANTOWN MUSICIANS ARE ROOTED IN LOCAL MUSIC HISTORY
She maintains a residency at the Peabody Hotel Rooftop and performs regularly with her band, The Vibe Tribe, at Nashoba, blending live music, DJing and horns. She also books popups at Lafayette's Music Room, Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Raiford's Disco and elsewhere. Anywhere with good energy and an audience ready to move is fair game. "My goal is to make everyone in the audience feel involved," she says. "I mix a lot of genres together to see what happens. My brain is literally nothing but music."

Singer-songwriter SARAH SPAIN grew up on classical piano in Germantown and added guitar and bass along the way. Like Davis, Spain gravitates toward the rock and soul touchstones that defined Memphis: the Laurel Canyon folk-pop and dream pop sound of the 1960s and '70s. "I draw a lot of influence from front-women like Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson and Debbie Harry," she says. "Of course The Cure, David Bowie and Smashing Pumpkins are big in my heart too, as I've always had a love for artists who embrace the wonderfully weird."
SARAH SPAIN
At 16, Spain played her first paying gig. A decade later, she's built a reputation for authenticity and reverence for that lineage. She graduated from Houston High School in 2018 and stays based in Germantown, holding a Tuesday residency at Moondance Grill and performing with her band Sarah Spain & the Nightshades. She also fronts two cover projects: JAM-JAM1, an '80s new-wave band, and Landslide: A Memphis Tribute to Fleetwood Mac, a direct homage to the rock legacy that shaped her. "This is my creative outlet and has given me amazing opportunities," Spain says. "I've performed at historic venues like Hernando's Hideaway and Lafayette's Music Room and I play regularly at Neil's, Ghost River Brewing and beyond."

BOBBY MANUEL, a Stax Hall of Fame inductee now living in Germantown, was there at the birth of modern soul music. Manuel played lead guitar for the Memphis Blazers before joining Stax Records in the 1960s, where he worked with Isaac Hayes, Albert King, Rufus Thomas and Luther Ingram. “One day I was gigging at Club Paradise and then I found myself as a trainee engineer at Stax as a 21 year old,” says Manual. “I was in college and recently married.”
BOBBY MANUEL
“Ronnie Capone and Steve Cropper were the main engineers and I was learning a new trade,” he says. “My first session was with (Stax legends) Delaney & Bonnie, with Leon Russell producing. Talk about baptism by fire!” He also filled in for Steve Cropper with Booker T. & the M.G.'s. That band was the very foundation that Davis and Spain drew from in their own work. His versatility became his calling card; he could play anything and play it well. He was as much songwriter and producer as performer, shaping the sound from every angle. “I mainly play guitar but I do a lot of writing,” he says. “Isaac Hayes' album blew up and I was his first guitar player. It was incredible. We played with Led Zeppelin at Winterland in San Francisco and it was amazing.” His resume spans more than six decades: co-writing songs, producing (including the Rick Dees hit "Disco Duck") and operating the Daily Planet studio near the University of Memphis with Stax founder Jim Stewart after the label closed.

In 2004, Manuel organized the Memphis All-Stars for the Stax Museum's opening, backing Hayes, Mavis Staples, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Solomon Burke and Al Green, a who's who of soul royalty. The performance was a testament to his relationships and his place in that legacy. He earned his Brass Note on Beale Street in 2018 and the Mississippi Music Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026. Most recently, he co-wrote and produced "That's What We Do," featured in HBO's Stax: Soulsville USA documentary. It's proof that his creative engine still runs strong after more than 50 years. ■ Photography provided by Bobby Manual

Pickleball is tennis's faster-growing cousin. Played on a smaller court with wooden paddles and a perforated ball, it combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong. The game has surged in popularity over the past five years, particularly among players over 55, thanks to its low impact, easy-to-learn rules and social atmosphere. Germantown's Cameron Brown Park Pickleball Complex and Riverdale Park courts offer open play whenever there are no clinics or tournaments scheduled.

Learn Something Old Mahjong, a Chinese game dating back centuries, has experienced a resurgence in popularity over the past decade. Played with 144 tiles, the game combines elements of skill, strategy and luck. Players draw and discard tiles to form winning combinations, much like rummy. The learning curve is gentle and beginners can start playing within minutes, however mastering strategy takes time. According to organizer Mona Mitchell, players come for the challenge but stay for the community. "It's not just a game, it's a lifestyle," she says. "To play perfectly and still lose, that is what Mahjong is all about." Tiles are unpredictable; every round teaches patience.

Bill dedicated fifty years to the banking industry, opening several banks in the Germantown and Collierville areas, and served two terms as a Germantown alderman.

Charles Speed A Legacy of Service By Stephanie Painter Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics In his career and volunteer work, Charles Speed was guided by a practical creed. "His life motto was 'Early is on time and on time is late,'" says his son Jason Speed. "He believed in showing up early, being prepared, and pitching in." That disciplined mindset shaped everything Charles did: From his family to his business to his decades of service to Germantown. Born and raised in the local area, Charles married his wife Shirley in 1968, and the couple had three children, including Jason's siblings Kelli and Shannon. When his wife died in 2001, he married Jane Pugh. Descending from a line of five generations of builders in Memphis, Charles owned Charles Speed Contracting, Inc. and several other businesses.
lady scorers program at the tournament that is now the FedEx St. Jude Championship, so Dad started volunteering there as a young man." He continued for the next 65 years and was the tournament's longest-serving volunteer, arriving before daylight to prepare for work. He served on the Tennessee Genealogical Society board and was a member of the Shelby County Sheriff Reserve and Memphis Jaycees. In 2017, the Chamber of Commerce recognized him as Ambassador of the Year. As part of Leadership Germantown, he spearheaded a project to move a fountain to the grounds of the Tennessee Genealogical library. "He was in his 70s and pushed a wheelbarrow and set bricks," says Jason. "It was rewarding for him and brought his interest in genealogy together with community service." In 2016, Leadership Germantown presented him with the Jim Roberts Leadership Award, recognizing him as an outstanding servant leader.
In 1990, Charles' disciplined mindset provided an opportunity to purchase Germantown Lumber. "Dad paid his bills there on the first of each month, and that earned great respect from the owner who brought him to the table to buy it," says Jason, now owner and operator of Germantown Lumber with his son Wyatt as manager. As a professional builder, Charles shaped the city's landscape. Supervised by their grandfather, Jason's sons thrived in their first work experiences. "Dad patiently taught them how to balance the drawer, work with customers, and interact with people," says Jason.
On May 23, 2026, Charles died at age 86, leaving a legacy of service. "People describe my dad as patient and kind, an icon and a legend," says Jason. "He liked working with people and didn't really care about money or position. He was a team player, and volunteering was his way of being part of something bigger."
His blueprint for community service was founded on compassion and teamwork. Charles followed an example set by his parents. "His father Sam Speed started the
"His best advice for me: Don't sit around and wait for life to happen to you," says Jason. With gratitude, the community celebrates a life well lived. ■
