am of what we have accomplished as a community. I am also honored to lead a wonderful and hardworking team that always goes above and beyond with everything that they do for our community Their dedication to our residents is commendable

The City of Gardena held its annual State of the City Address at the new Aquatics and Senior Center this time around Those in attendance got a sneak peek of the pool before the big grand opening Complete with lights and decorations, the unveiling of the pool was a sight to behold It is something so many of us have waited so long for, so to be able to tie it in with such a special event was a wonderful way to celebrate the City’s 95 Anniversary and all of the City’s many accomplishments. th

I am also excited to announce that the City will be holding its third Citizens Leadership Academy The Citizens Leadership Academy is something I am particularly eager to have return because it offers such a unique experience for residents It is so easy for the public to look at a city and imagine what goes on behind closed doors, but this Academy gives them a front row seat to truly learn all about where we spend funds and how we operate on a daily basis. Please check our website for the most up to date information.

This year is also a momentous one because we unearthed a City of Gardena time capsule from half a century ago! In recognition of our nation’s bicentennial year, 1976, a time capsule was buried and set to be opened in July of 2026. Back then, a bicentennial committee buried this time capsule and left coordinates and a map for us to locate it all these years later. What better way to celebrate the City of Gardena’s rich history than digging up the relics and pieces of history that were left by our predecessors.

As we embark on these new milestones, I can’t wait to move forward as a City and create new lasting memories The grand opening of the Aquatics and Senior Center is sure to be the highlight of the year but there are so many other wonderful programs and events to look forward to I am confident that we will continue to work hard and grow as a community centered around the needs of its residents. I hope that the Activity and Resource Guide will continue to provide valuable information about all our programs and services to our residents.

RENT MEDIATION

On April 10, 1987, an Ordinance of the City of Gardena became effective to assist tenants and owners in resolving rental increase disputes through mediation and hearing services Chapter 14 04 of the City of Gardena's Municipal Code requires all owners of residential rental units to provide one booklet of the Gardena “Rent Mediation and Hearing Procedures” to each residential unit/tenant and to all new tenants thereafter. The booklet provides an overview of the mediation and hearing procedures, along with the full text of the Ordinance.

Additionally, the Ordinance requires that a tenant receive a written notice of a rent increase at least thirty (30) days prior to the actual effective date of the increase if the increase is ten percent (10%) or less. If the rent increase is greater than ten percent (10%), the ordinance requires that a tenant receive a written notice of a rent increase ninety (90) days prior to the actual effective date of the increase Mobile Home Park tenants must receive a ninety (90) day notice

All rent increases must also include a notice to the tenant of their right to mediation/hearing and that the tenant has ten (10) business days following receipt of the notice to file a mediation petition with the City, and twenty-five (25) days for mobile-home tenants, in order to exercise their rights under Chapter 14.04 of the Gardena Municipal Code.

A tenant may file a request for mediation by completing a "Request for Mediation" form and submitting it to the City Manager's Office at 1700 W. 162nd Street, or by email rentmediation@cityofgardena org

As I reflect on my first year serving as your Chief of Police, I want to sincerely thank the residents City leadership, and members of our community for the trust and support you have shown the Gardena Pol Department. It has been an honor to lead this department and to work alongside the dedicated men and women who proudly serve this city every day.

Over the past year, one of my top priorities has been listening. I have listened to residents at commu meetings, business owners, neighborhood concerns, elected officials, and our own department employees. message I heard consistently was clear: our community wants to feel safe, wants to see police officers engaged in the neighborhoods, and wants continued attention focused on traffic safety and quality-of-l concerns.

In response, we have increased high-visibility traffic enforcement in areas where speeding, reckless d and traffic complaints have become ongoing concerns. We have dedicated officers specifically to enforcement efforts in targeted locations while continuing to emphasize neighborhood patrol visibility throughout the city. Public safety remains our primary focus, and we understand that even issues such speeding, loud vehicles, illegal parking, and reckless driving directly affect the quality of life for

Looking toward the future, the Gardena Police Department will continue exploring innovative and modern to serve the community and combat crime. Technology continues to evolve, and law enforcement must evol with it. Whether through drone technology, improved analytics, enhanced camera systems, or other moder policing tools, we will continue seeking responsible and effective ways to improve public safety while maintaining transparency and community trust. These advancements are intended to support our officers improve response capabilities while strengthening our ability to proactively address crime and public concerns.

At the same time, no technology will ever replace the importance of personal interaction, community relationships, and trust. Community policing remains at the heart of what we do. The partnerships we share with our residents, businesses, schools, faith-based organizations, city departments, and elected officials are essential to the continued success of our city.

As we move forward into another year, I remain optimistic and excited about what lies ahead for Gardena. Together, we will continue building a safer community while maintaining the professionalism, compassion, and service that our residents deserve.

For 86 years, GTrans has proudly served Gardena and nearby communities with safe, reliable, and outstanding transit. Serving over 2 million riders each year, GTrans offers six fixed-route bus lines, Bolt Powered by GTrans, our on-demand shared-ride service, and Line G, our summer service to Manhattan Beach!

During the 2026 World Cup, GTrans partnered with 14 regional transit agencies through the Games Enhanced Transit System (G.E.T.S.) to help move more than 25,000 fans across Los Angeles and Orange County to matches at SoFi Stadium.

Service operated from Harbor Gateway Transit Center, connecting fans to the soccer matches. Throughout the tournament, GTrans proudly helped deliver transportation for one of the world’s largest sporting events.

The Human Services Division offers programs, services, and resources for residents of Gardena. We are here to support those in need and accept donations from the community. Registration is required for all programs and services.

COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY

The Gardena Community Food Pantry provides non-perishable food, hygiene, and baby supplies. Pantry hours are Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. By registering, residents can qualify for up to six (6) pantry visits per year. Appointments are recommended. Donations to our pantry are welcome at anytime.

BIRTHDAY PROGRAM

This service is for families with children ages 1 - 12 years experiencing food and financial hardships. A birthday kit provides ingredients to make a birthday cake, a gift, and decorations.

RENTAL ASSISTANCE

The City of Gardena has developed a Rental Assistance Program to assist those experiencing financial hardships. Stay informed about upcoming opportunities, eligibility details, and application timelines as new resources become available. HOMELESS ASSISTANCE & PREVENTION

Case Management and emergency services are available to those at-risk of or experiencing homelessness in Gardena.
